Wynema McGrew cited his obituary, with a Columbia, Mississippi byline, as showing him as a native of Route 4, Lumberton, and member of the Greenville Baptist Church. He was survied by his wife, Jewel, four sons, Thomas, Gerald and Douglas all of Lumberton and Terry of Purvis, and one daughter, Mrs. Sandra Parker of Sumrall, and seven grandchildren.

John married Zuleeke "Leake" McGrew about 1891. Zuleeke (daughter of James F. McGrew and Sarah Frances Cook) was born on 6 Jul 1876 in Marion County, Mississippi; died in Jul 1947 in Baxterville, Lamar County, Mississippi; was buried in Caney Church Cemetery, Lamar County, Mississippi. Wynema McGrew shows that she married John McArthur, the son of Lott and Nancy McArthur. "John was a native of the Baxterville section of Lamar County and had been a prominent farmer and cattleman. His wife was Miss Zuletha McGrew, who preceded him in death by several years. About two years prior to his death he asked to go to the Old Men's Home at Jackson. He died there of pneumonia and complication. He is suived by one son, J. E. McArthur, of Baxterville, Mississippi."

Per the book "The Southern McGrews Grew," James was show in in the home of Daniel Carter on the 1860 Perry County, Mississippi census and in the home of Felix Rawls for the 1870 Perry County, Mississippi census.

Wynema McGrew reports he was most likely a veteran of the Civil War, as a James McGrew enlisted on 10 Aug 1861 in Jones County, Mississippi, in Captain A. McLemore's Company, Co B., 27 Regiment, Mississippi Infantry. James McGrew was appointed sergeant on 27 Sep 1862; hospitalized in Shelbyville, Tennessee for several months, and later caputured on Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was held as a prisoner of war in Rock Island, Illinois, and paroled on 8 Jun 1865 at Mobile, Alabama, his place of residence being shown as Perry County, Mississippi.
