On his Texas Death Certificate, his parents were shown as Lee McDaniel and Lanie Travis. Informant was his daughter, Mrs. Delma Welch. He was shown as a farmer.

Joyce Kathryn Lacoste, 71, died in Hemphill Texas, January 7, 2013. She was born to Jodie McDaniel and Elvie Buckley McDaniel on April 30, 1940. She was a lifelong resident of Hemphill. She owned and operated Toledo Insurance Inc, and was a member of the Hemphill Church of God.

Joyce was survived by her husband Edward Lacoste of Hemphill, her five sons, George Phillips of Houston, Gilbert Phillips of Vidor, Joseph Harris of Hemphill, Ivy Phillips of Houston, and Ray Don Phillips of Hemphill; one sister, Elsie Miers of Houston; nine grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Joyce was preceded in death by her son Jason Harris.

Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM Wednesday evening, January 9, 2013, in the Starr Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM, Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Starr Funeral home Chapel, with gravesides services to follow at Myrtle Springs Cemetery.

As of the 1910 census, Lany was listed as an in-patient at a hospital in Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas. By 1920 she had returned to Sabine County, and was living with her son and daughter-in-law, Jody and Viney McDaniel.

Her Texas Death certificate, viewable online at FamilySearch.org, Texas Deaths, 1890-1976, shows her name as Lannie McDaniel, and that she had been predeceased by her husband. She was shown as a lifetime resident of Sabine County. The informant was Una McClelland.

Notes:

Robert Cecil McDaniel, a descendant, wrote in his autobiography that "My McDaniel ancestors migrated west from the Edgefield District near Spartanburg, South Carolina, and apparently stopped for a time in Mississippi. They were enumerated in the federal census of 1850, both in Itwambia County, Mississippi, and in Sabine County, Texas." He also indicated that they settled in the community later to be known as Fairdale, in the southeastern part of Sabine County.

Mar 1846: Recieved Winney McDaniel by experience. Note: Winney McDaniel was the wife of William Watson McDaniel, brother of Charity. Shortly before 1850 they moved to MS and then to Sabine Co, Texas where Levi McDaniel also moved.

According to SABINE COUNTY HISTORICAL SKETCHES AND GENEALOGICAL RECORDS "Sophronia P and Ruth (White), both had married brothers, Cannon and Richard Travis, cousins of Wm. Barret Travis of Alamo fame (p. 58). The Travis men fought with Marion 'The Swamp Fox' in the American Revolution. R.H. Travis was the son of Wm Travis, and g.son of John and Arabella Hurst Travis. This Travis lineage is a collateral line of William B. Travis of Alamo fame (p.73)"

According to MINUTES 1858-1890 OF THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH HEMPHILL, Richard H. Travis was one of the eleven founding members of this church, along with his wife, Ruth C. Travis, as well as his brother and sister-in-law, Cannon and Sophronia Travis. Richard and Cannon Travis's membership in the church was rocky. On several occasions their membership was withdrawn, such as on 13 August 1859 when "Brothers R H Travis, Cannon Travis, & Wm T White came forward and acknowledge that they bin overtaken in a falt and beged the church to bare with them on a promise of assistence of that they would Refrain in the futer from such company where uppon the Church forgive them in love." Their occasions of sin seemed to center around "indulgin in profane swaring....and indulgin too mutch in intocking spirits." Over the thirty some odd years they were associated with the church, they were expelled several times, and usually soon readmitted.

Richard married Rutha Caroline White on 14 Sep 1843 in Amite County, Mississippi. Rutha (daughter of Edward White and Elizabeth Strickland) was born about 1822 in Mississippi; was buried in Travis Cemetery, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
