    The Texas Birth certificate of his youngest son, John, showed that father J A Tipton was born in Houston County, Texas. He registered for the draft during the First World War in Sabine County, Texas. He was shown as a planer helper at Temple Lumber Company. He was of medium heighth and build, with blue eyes and light hair, and had lost one eye. Nearest relative was his wife, Maude Tipton.

    John Maxey (23) and Mary Rhodus (14) are both living in the home of Joseph Maxey at the time of the 1860 Sabine Parish Census. Kathy Casagranda shows that John Maximillian married Rosella M. Rhodes on 15 Nov 1860 in Sabine Parish. Was this his first wife?

    After his first wife died, John was said to have married Mrs. Sarah Ann Balien. Her maiden name was Sarah Ann Brooks, as shown on birth records of her children. John and Sarah can be found living nearby to Joseph and Martha Maximillian in Negreet, Sabine Parish, at the time of the 1880 Federal census.

    William Scott, and others, show his middle name as Jeb.

    The History of Sabine Parish, Louisiana (author John Belisle, The Sabine Banner Press, 1912) states that "in 1860 the white population of Sabine Parish numbers about four thousand, and there were less than two thousand slaves. There were few really wealthy people in the parish, and many owned not more than one of two slaves." The owners of six or more in 1861 included John Maximillian.

    Madge Lois Tipton Strickland, in a self published article published in a DRT heritage book, stated that it was John Maximillian Jr, and not his father for whom he was named, that was a participant in the Battle of Nacogdoches in 1832.
