  1. 10.  Major Reuben Sanford was born on 3 Dec 1780 in Woodbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut (son of Oliver Sanford and Phebe Newton); died on 19 May 1855 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio; was buried in Green Lawn Cemetery, Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio.

    Notes:

    Reuben settled in Jay, New York about 1800. He removed to Wilmington, New York where he started a potashery, opened a hotel, and before 1820 erected a forge which he conducted until 1849. He served as Supervisor and Postmaster; was a member of the Assembly 1815-1817 and State Senator 1828-1831, and a member of Constitutional Convention in 1821. He was one of the Pioneer settlers of Essex County.
    On 22 May 1806 he was commissioned Captain in the New York State Militia, and Major Commandant of an Independent Battalion on 2 March 1814; he resigned 6 April 1815. He served in the War of 1812 as Captain of the 8th (Miller's) Regiment, detached militia 1 July 1812 to 10 January 1813 on the Canadian frontier; Captain of the 9th Regiment August 1 to 6, Murray's Raid, Plattsburg, New York; Major of Sanford's Battalion May 13-16 1814, mouth of Boghet River and September 2-14, 1814, siege of Plattsburg.

    An article about him was published on the front page of "The Plattsburgh Sentinel", Vol. 35, No. 48, published on Friday, April 18, 1890. It was one of a series about 'noted men and women of the Champlain Valley and the Adirondacks,' and stated that although it had been nearly 35 years since he departed this life, his name is familiar to the people on the line of the Ausable River, and many in all of Northern New York. The article noted his homestead was currently owned by son-in-law Elisha Adams. The article mentioned he had moved to his mountain home, then a wilderness, with his wife in 1805. He was said to be one of the leading Methodists of Wilmington, with the fine brick church of that village built at his expense. Amos Avery, a son-in-law, settled in Wilmington in 1822, and Elisha A. Adams, another son-in-law settled their in early days as well, though in 1890 he was a resident of Plattsburgh. Maj. Sanford was the first postmaster of Wilmington, and was suceeded by Elisha A. Adams. Maj. Sanford died at the residence of his son-in-law J. F. Bartlett, at Columbus, Ohio in 1855. A daughter. Mrs. L. W. Pierce, resides in Pittsburgh, Mrs. M. G. Baker, Miss Anna Adams or Plattsburgh, F. E. Pierce on Morrisonville, Mrs. Oliver Able of Elizabethtown, Mrs. E. W. Hindes of Burlington, Vt., and Mrs. Emmet Fitch, of Mo???, are among the grandchildren. Also, Sanford Avery, Willsbourough, Mrs. Bullen, Black Brook; Maj. H. J. Adams, Denver, Colo.; E. W. Pierce, Rochester, NY; Miss Mary Pierce, Pittsburgh, Miss Fannie Carter, Keeseville, and others.

    Reuben married Polly Lewis on 16 Feb 1804. Polly was born on 15 Sep 1784 in Poultney, Rutland County, Vermont; died on 20 Mar 1869 in Plattsburgh, Clinton County, New York. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
