His Texas Death Certificate shows him as a son of Jim G. Mason and Susan Halbert. He was a 21 year resident of Cherokee county and farmer. He died in a farming accident when a piece of machinery fell across his chest.

A newspaper clipping about her death is posted on her memorial on FindAGrave. It is titled "Collision of Car and Truck Takes Life Mrs. Mason, 79.'

The article stated that Mrs. Faye Harris Mason was dead on arrival at Rusk Memorial Hospital after turning in front of a Milk Truck. The article also noted that she had been a resident of Rusk for 45 years, and member of the First Baptist Church and in the T. E. L. Class. Survivors were sons Byron Mason, Dallas; G. T. Mason, New London and Col. W. H. Mason, Jr. of Pope AFB, North Carolina; daughters, Mrs. E. S. Caldwell, Angleton and Mrs. F. D. Dickey, Fort Worth, sister, Mrs. A. A. Wilson, Hemphill; 17 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Pallbearers were Lonnie Spivey, Russell Gilman, Carl Rogers, Walter Courtney, Mayo Starkey and Frank Merriweather.

His widow, Susan Halbert Mason, applied for a Confederate Widow's pension. She was a resident of Sabine County, Post Office Isla when she applied, on April 22, 1924. She stated that her husbands full name was James Governor Mason, and that he enlisted in 1861 and served four years, and "was wounded and at home when war ended." He served in Capt. Edwards Company, from San Augustine County and Lane's regiment. Witness were M. W. Fullen and W W Halbert. The Pension commission indicated that there were not muster rolls on file for Edward's Co, Crump's Regiment (formerly Lane's Regiment). Bridgett Kearney, on her "Visiting the Past" tree at RootsWeb's World Connect states that "Headstone lists middle name as Galbreth. Other sources, lists middle name as Galreith: Nickname of "Gov"

James married Susannah "Susan" Halbert about 1864. Susannah (daughter of Joel Halbert and Tabitha Elizabeth Cox) was born on 5 Dec 1844 in Milam, Sabine County, Texas; died on 20 Nov 1924 in Texas; was buried in Mason Cemetery, Milam, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

The 1900 census shows her as the mother of 12 children, and in 1910 it was reported that she was instead the mother of 11. Both census reports indicate only 7 still living.

Susan Halbert's first husband, Albert J. Vickers, was the nephew of James "Gov" Mason, her second husband. The two men were around the same age, however.

Many reasearchers also show them as the parents of William Joel, ca 1871 and Susannah born ca 1874.

Joseph married Cyrenthia Collier about 1867 in Sabine County, Texas. Cyrenthia (daughter of George Washington Collier and Sarah Elizabeth Tatum) was born on 1 Sep 1848 in Mississippi; died on 19 Jan 1914 in Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Cooper-Harris Cemetery, Sabine County, Texas. Said to be a son of David MASON, Rev. Soldier, and Isabella TEAGUE of South Carolina. David was said to have died on September 11, 1829 in Laurens County, SC. James, John and William, their sons, were all three early pioneers of Sabine County. The brothers (were born in South Carolina and) went to Alabama where they lived for ten years before coming to Coahuila-Texas. (White and Toole, p 40).

James Mason received his headright from the Mexican Government. It was located in the Isla Community, and many of his descendants still live there. (White and Toole, p 40).

In the book "Sabine County Historical Sketches and Genealogical Records" by Edna McDaniel White and Blanche Findley (sic) Toole, it was stated that "Theophilus Alexander Harris, b. 1810, m Elizabeth Reeves, b. 1817 in S. C., and came to Texas prior to 1837. He was Justice of Peace in Milam in 1837. He was interested in civic improvement, and when New Hope Baptist Church was organized, the meetings were held in his home. He received a third class land grant in Sabine County." (p. 26).

However, a direct descendant, Elizabeth Pate, epate2@wildblue.net, cautions that it might be possible that Theophilus Harris and Alexander Harris were actually two different men, but likely related in some fashion. Theophilus was said by some to be named William Theophilus. Census records for the family of Alexander and Elizabeth consistently show his name simply as Alex, Alexander or A. Elizabeth also noted that the Alexander and Elizabeth, along with their children, can be found in Talladega County, Alabama at the time of both the 1840 and 1850 federal census enumerations, and that their youngest daughter, Nancy, is also shown on the 1860 Sabine County, Texas census as being born in Alabama ca 1854.

Virgie Speights wrote, in a birthday sketch of granddaughter Daisy Florence Harris Wilson, that "George Washington and Sarah Elizabeth Tatom Collier came from Mississippi in a covered wagon and settled in Milam where they owned a sawmill, gristmill, store and hundreds of acres of land. Collier also was a political and civic leader, serving as tax collector among other offices." (Speights, Old Timers of Sabine County, Texas, p. 81).
