Thomas married Rebecca "Becky" Richardson. Rebecca was born in Feb 1832 in Louisiana; died about 1907 in Texas; was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery (aka Whitehead Cemetery or Martin-Whitehead Cemetery), Pineland, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Rebecca "Becky" Richardson was born in Feb 1832 in Louisiana; died about 1907 in Texas; was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery (aka Whitehead Cemetery or Martin-Whitehead Cemetery), Pineland, Sabine County, Texas.

    Notes:

Virgie Collier Speights, in OLD TIMERS OF SABINE COUNTY, TEXAS, lists her last name both as Richardson (p. 46) and as Watkins (p. 54).

    Notes:

    Married:
In Virgie Collier Speights June 11, 1964 column about Rev. and Mrs. Bob Strickland, it is noted that Bob's maternal grandparents were "Tom and Beckie (Watkins--sic) MARTIN, and they have five sons and two daughters, Frank, Case, Lip, Jimmy, Ed, Marge and Harriet Ann, his mother" (Old Timer of Sabine County, Texas, p. 54).

The 1900 census showed that Rebecca had five children, four of whom were still living. Based on both the column referenced above, and the various census enumerations from 1850 through 1880, it appears she had at least the seven children listed above, and possibly one other son that may have died relatively young, Clinton (b. 1855). Perhaps the census information could be interpreted as Rebecca had a total of nine children....five deceased and four still living (or vice versa).

    Children:
    1. William Franklin "Frank" Martin was born in Jul 1847 in Pineland, Sabine County, Texas; died on 16 Jan 1921 in Pineland, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery (aka Whitehead Cemetery or Martin-Whitehead Cemetery), Pineland, Sabine County, Texas.
    2. Harriet Ann Martin was born on 29 Jan 1852 in Texas; died on 19 Jul 1915; was buried in Bronson Cemetery, Bronson, Sabine County, Texas.
    3. Clinton Martin was born about 1855 in Texas; and died.
    4. Lewis C. "Case" "Casey" Martin was born on 17 Feb 1857 in Texas; died on 19 May 1908; was buried in Martin Cemetery (Martin's Chapel Cemetery), Sabine County, Texas.
    5. 2. Lipscomb "Lip" Nordell Martin was born in Oct 1859 in Texas; and died.
    6. Margaret "Marge" Elizabeth Martin was born on 21 Nov 1862 in Brookeland, Sabine County, Texas; died on 7 Mar 1937 in Brookeland, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Brookeland Cemetery, Brookeland, Sabine County, Texas.
    7. James "Jimmy" M. Martin was born about 1870 in Sabine County, Texas; and died.
    8. Zeremiah Edward "Eddie" Martin was born on 29 Sep 1876 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 15 Mar 1926; was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery (aka Whitehead Cemetery or Martin-Whitehead Cemetery), Pineland, Sabine County, Texas.

  3. 6.  James Amberson Cooper was born on 12 Nov 1843 in Hinds County, Mississippi (son of Jonathan Henry "J. H." Cooper and Obediance "Obediah" ???); died on 5 Jan 1927 in Pineland, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Jacks Cemetery, Pineland, Sabine County, Texas.

    Notes:

Virgie Speights shows his middle name as Anderson, but all other researchers indicate it was actually Amberson. This is supported by the Widow's Application for a Confederate Pension application completed by Amelia Cooper, listing the full name of her husband as James Amberson Cooper. She also referenced that he had previously drawn a pension, citing file number 33200. Ancestry.com shows in their Civil War Service Records database that J. A. Cooper served in the Eleventh Texas Infantry, entering as a private and being discharged as a Corporal.

"On the 1900 census, Amelia reports that she has had 11 children, 7 of whom were alive at that time. Only the 10 children below have been identified. Apparently one child whose name is now not known died at birth or very soon thereafter. If anyone has any information about this child, please contact me at mailto: jimcooper@austin.rr.com."

They may have been from Pike County, Mississippi, as this is the location of birth listed on the confederate widows pension application of their daughter, Mary Jane Martin Whitehead.

FindAGrave shows that Jonathan and Obedience "moved to Pineland, Sabine County, Texas in 1854 from Mississippi. They built their first home, a log house, a short distance from Pineland, and later build a larger house north of the present town site on the east side of Highway 87. He went into the mercantile business and owned a store and a sawmill at Yellowpine, Texas. He was also a farmer and a breeder of livestock. His hobbies were fishing and hunting and he was said to have been one of the best in his community. He was elected Commissioner of the Sabine County Board of Supervisors, and as Commissioner, he ordered the County to buy in 1870 the first iron safe for the records of the County Clerk. Later the courthouse burned and all the records were destroyed."

    Notes:

Kay Parker McCary shows her last name as CHANCE. This is supported by the Texas Death Certificate of her son, John Daniel Cooper, on which his parents are shown as Jonathan Henry Cooper and Abedia Chance. The informant was J. E. Cooper, presumably Johnnie Elisha Cooper, a grandson of Jonathan and Obediah. Other researchers, including Barbara Yancey Dore and Jim Cooper, instead list her maiden name as BRENT. She is also shown as BRENT on FindAGrave.
