Lamoin Champ, Nocona, Texas, retired pastor of First Baptist Church, Burkburnett, Texas, officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, Ardmore. Arrangements are under the direction of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Born May 22, 1926 at Lawton to James Arvil and Dollie C. Brandon Hanks, she passed away Jan. 20, 2006 at an Ardmore hospital.

A resident of Falconhead since 1987, Mrs. King had previously made her home at Burkburnett for some 30 years.

She and Buren Edwin "Mort" King were married Nov. 14, 1942 at Lawton. They were married 61 years at the time of his death on Aug. 17, 2003.

She owned and operated King's Frame Shoppe in Burkburnett from 1974 to 1986. Mrs. King was also a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star Grand Chapter #970 of Wichita Falls, Texas.

Throughout the years she served as a den mother, Boy Scout leader and president of the Gray Lady Chapter of the American National Red Cross. Mrs. King was a member of First Baptist Church at Burkburnett. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

'God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be, so He put His arms around you and whispered, "Come with me." With tearful eyes we watched you slowly fade away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, your hard-working hands put to rest ... God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.'

Email from Ron Hanks (ronhanks@earthlink.net) on August 13, 2006:

"I have information on this family. This was John Stewart (or Steward) Hanks, son of James W Hanks and Marium Hughes. John S Hanks was born July 1865 in Indiana, probably Gibson County. I don't have a date of death for him. He married Annie B Brown, 8 Aug 1889 in Gibson County, Indiana. She was born July 1870. I do not have her date of death either."

Email from Ron Hanks (ronhanks@earthlink.net) on August 24, 2006:

Sorry for the delay, I have been finding more details on this family. Of the children of James Stewart Hanks, this has been probably the most challenging one to sort out. James W Hanks and Marium Hughes married 26 Mar 1854 in Richland County, Illinois. They are in Gibson Co., IN for the 1860 census with son William, age 4 and son Joel A. age 8/12. I have never found this family in the 1870 census. This created a big problem because James W died 10 Aug 1870 and Marium died 27 Feb 1872. The children were placed in different families and have been difficult to track. Probate and guardianship records helped to finally get all the children sorted out. Here is the list of children with notes about what I have been able to find:

    4) John Stewart Hanks b.Jul 1865 d.????
I think you have most of the census records already listed as deputy sheriff in 1930 census, Comanche County, OK

    Notes:

    Married:
John and Annie appears to have adopted or fostered other children throughout the years of their marriage. Family records show them as the parents of only five children born to them. Other children are listed on various census records as either "adopted son" or "daughter", when no indication exists that any of them were born to this couple.

In an email dated September 4, 2006, Ron Hanks states that: the "5 children / 3 living" would account for; living, Alvin Roscoe, James Arvil and Perry and dead; Wiley & Zola Faye. As for the other mystery children my best guess is that they are all adopted. We know that a 3 year old Phillip Hanks is listed as adopted in 1920. I had overlooked the 7 year old Rosalie Dagley in 1910. Between the fact that John & Annie married in 1889 and their oldest son was only 19, this could not be a grand-daughter (unless John had a daughter from a previous marriage, but I've seen nothing to indicate that. Even so, she is listed as a daughter, not grand daughter) I had always assumed that Dora Jones was a daughter based on the 1930 census (but had wondered where she was in the earlier census.) Dora, Rosalie and Phillip are not listed as children in SueAnna's info. That information stated 5 children, 2 that died young in IL which is consistant with the 1910 census data. The only thing that seems to make sense would be that they were all adopted children (perhaps orphans?). Considering John's father died when he was 5 and his mother died when he was 7 he may have been inclined to help orphaned children.

    Children:
    1. Wiley Hanks was born after 1889; died about 1896 in White County, Illinois; was buried in Seal Cemetery, White County, Illinois.
    2. 2. James Arval Hanks, Sr. was born on 24 Jun 1890 in Indiana; died on 14 Oct 1974 in Burkburnett, Wichita County, Texas; was buried in Highland Cemetery, Lawton, Comanche County, Oklahoma.

    Notes:

Her marriage record shows her last name as SUMNER. Last name might instead be SUMMERS, based on the Texas Death record of her daughter Anna Belle. Daughter in law Medreth Vaughan Hanks shows the last name as SUMNERS, which appears to match the 1850 census, so this is assumed to be correct.
