The website for the City of Batavia, Illinois (www.cityofbatavia.net) states the following about its early governance "By 1850 Batavia was large enough to have its own government, they had a town meeting so the citizens of Batavia had their say on how Batavia should be run. They held an election, Meredith Mallory to represent Batavia at township meetings. Joel McKee to be town clerk, for the making of reports of business that Batavia handled, he was also elected to be Justice of the Peace. Daniel HYDE was elected to decide on property taxes, and Joseph Whipple was elected to provide for the poor and to be one of Batavia's two policement. They other policemen selected was Salem Phillips.

Jennifer Fawley emailed Volume 18, Number 2 of "The Batavia Historian," prepared for their regular open meeting of April 17, 1977. Speaker Jean Humphrey discussed her findings about Batavia after analysing the 1850 census in some detail. Of the population of 892, 337 were New Yorkers, 222 from elsewhere in Illinois and 46 from Vermont, including the the Youngs, and Daniel Hyde, 67 from Canada, and 54 from Ireland.
