  1. 8.  Allen Chambers was born on 1 Oct 1813 in Georgia; died on 5 Feb 1884 in Sabine County, Texas; was buried in New Hope Cemetery, Milam, Sabine County, Texas.

    Notes:

"Allen Chamber's father was Henry (d 1842, the son of Wm Chambers, Amer Rev Veteran who rec'd a land grant in Warren Co, Ga. He d ca 1832, in Wilkinson Co Ga, leaving his widow Martha* who was on the 1850 census. The Allen Chambers family came to Sabine County in 1860, where he died Feb 5, 1884. His wife died Apr 29, 1878. Both are buried in the New Hope cemetery." White & Toole, SABINE COUNTY HISTORICAL SKETCHES AND GENEALOGICAL RECORDS. Virgie Speights wrote that the Chambers came from Georgia in the middle 1800's and settled on Chambers Hill, north of Milam, where they built a log cabin, in which they lived until they moved a mile or so further north, and built another cabin. Eventually they built a new huge, handhewn, square logged house, which was still standing when she wrote of it in the mid 1960's, and was owned by Elzie Chambers, who used the original home as a corn crib.

*Martha Chambers on 1850 Wilkinson Co Ga census is widow of Henry Chambers, and NOT the widow of his father William (Sr) Chambers. Martha, Henry's widow, lived until 1873. (Email from Earl Scott Chambers).

Earl Scott Chamber's line of descent follows:

    -William Chambers and Elizabeth Patton

-William Chambers and Rebecca Stuckey (likely to be his 2d wife) (Henry, Joel and others descend from Williams first wife.....)

-William Chambers and Isabell Jane Garrett

-Lewis Morgan Chambers and Lillie Louise McCorkle

-Jessie Robert Chambers and Ella Horne

-Johnie Hue Chambers and Sadie Morris

    -Earl Scott Chambers.

Virgie Speights, in OLD TIMERS OF SABINE COUNTY, TEXAS, in a column about Pearl Chambers Lord Greer, dated January 30, 1964, wrote that "Adam Bennett and Mary Jane Elizabeth Harvey, came with their slaves from Louisiana, just ahead of the sheriff. He was chasing them to take away their slaves in connection with some sort of lien connected with the estate of Mrs. Bennett's mother. They barely made it to Texas and safety in time to camp in the 'sand field' now known as "Bennet Field," just on the Texas side of the Sabine. The Louisiana authorities camped on the opposite side of the river before frustratedly returning home the next day. Then Adam staked his claim atop a nearby hill with gently sloping fields towards the river. The place is still called the "Bennett Place." There is a family graveyard nearby. The elder Bennetts had come to East Feliciana Parish from Alabama, and his father, a silversmith, had come from Germany." In a later article, this one profiling Abbie Della Bennett Travis, January 27, 1966, she added that the lien was due to "a matter of a few unpaid debts. The slaves were to be confiscated, so the Bennett's, their two children, and Zelotus Margaret Ann Boyd Harvey raced to the Sabine River and safety which they attained just before dark."
