Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Franklin J. Strickland was born in Dec 1888 in Georgia (son of John Monroe Strickland and Sarah J. Dunnaway); and died.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  John Monroe Strickland was born in Jun 1860 in Georgia (son of Ansel B. Strickland and Mary "Polly" Ann Braswell); and died.

    Notes:

Not listed on the 1860 Federal census in the household of his parents, Ansel B. Strickland and Mary "Polly" Braswell. However, even though the census appears to have been taked on July 5, 1860, and John Monroe was born in June 1860, the instructions for the 1860 census indicate that: "The name of every person whose usual place of abode on the 1st day of June, 1860, was in this family," insert the name of every free person in each family, of every age, including the names of those temporarily absent on a journey, visit, or for the purposes of education, as well as those that were at home on that day. The name of any member of a family who may have died since the 1st day of June is to be entered and the person described as if living, but THE NAME OF ANY PERSON BORN SINCE THE FIRST DAY OF JUNE IS TO BE OMITTED. The names are to be written beginning with the father and mother, or, if either or both be dead, begin with some other ostensible head of the family, to be followed, as far as practicable, with the name of the oldest child residing at home, then the next oldest, and so on to the youngest, then the other inmates, lodgers, and boarders, laborers, domestics, and servants."

He is listed, however, with his mother and older brothers on the 1870 Federal Census of Clarke County, Georgia.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Ansel B. Strickland was born about 1814 in Jackson County, Georgia (son of Bennett Strickland); died on 21 May 1863 in Richmond (Independent City), Virginia.

    Notes:

Most internet trees show that the Ansel Strickland, who married first Elizabeth Strickland and later married Amy Braswell, was a son of Hardy "Devil" Strickland and his wife, Priscilla Ann Strickland.

Richard Chapman (chapman_richard@bellsouth.net) emailed, in December 2012, that he was "convinced that this Ansel is not the son of Hardy and Priscilla as most trees on Ancestry state. My first clue came from a descendant of Hardy and Priscilla who is reasonably sure (based on oral family history) that Hardy's son Ansel never married. Assuming this is correct, I began a search to find my Ansel's parents. First, I learned that Ancel's first wife Elizabeth was the daughter of Richard Benjamin Strickland. Next, I confirmed that Richard B. had a brother named Bennett and that Bennett had a son named Ansel Butler born abt. 1815 (about the same time as Hardy's son) This meant that Ansel's first wife was also his first cousin. I have discovered many trees which indicate that this Ansel is the son of Bennett Strickland and Nancy Bone. The most credible source is a descendant of my Monroe's brother. She is positive of her information but at this time has not provided her sources. Family names and proximity of families indicate Ansel has more ties to Benjamin and Bennett than to Hardy's family. I noticed that a John F. Wise from Montgomery,Al has made comments about Ansel and he invites reactions"

    John Wise's comments follow:

I never found or recorded this info. before, so I thought I'd pass it on, i.e., some of you other Strickland researchers may be interested in this finding and conclusion.

While checking the U.S. Census of 1860 info. contained in the "Strickland Scene," Vol 9, No. 4, June 1991, page 67, I ran across the following census entry for Clarke County [GA], Dwelling 222, Family 222, on A. B. STRICKLAND (39 years old), his wife MARY ??? (27 years old), and their six (6) children.

I checked this census entry against my master database [I always do this to clear up unattached "strays"] and found that A.B. STRICKLAND fits the birth date and surrounding county areas, and the name and year-of-birth of the son of HARDY (DEVIL HARDY) STRICKLAND SR. and wife PRISCILLA ANNE STRICKLAND, of nearby Jackson Co., GA. Since this is a good circumstantial and logical "probable" hit, I connected this A.B. STRICKLAND found in Clarke Co., GA. (in 1860) to DEVIL HARDY STRICKLAND SR. in my database.

Of course my info. is in no way proof positive, so I stand ready to be admonished, corrected, etc. If any of you have changes or additions to this finding, please share your info. and update your Strickland kuz'ns (me included).

Richard Champman followed up on his email above in June 2013, stating that he had
"more documentation on Ansel B. Strickland 1814-1863. I have DAR record for Henry Strickland, ancestor # A111338 and a member national number 771154. This document shows that Ansel was the son of Bennett Strickland and Nancy Bone. Bennet was the son of Henry Peter Stickland born 1744-54 died 20 Feb 1796 in Jackson Co. Ga. and Mary Hickman."

Civil War service records for Ansel Strickland are below. It appears Ansel actually died on 21 Mary 1863 in Richmond rather than simply "mustering out."

In December, 2013, Richard Chapman emailed that "
My application for SAR membership was approved which helps verify my line to Henry Peter Strickland and confirms(in my opinion) that Ansel B. who died in the Civil War at Richmond was the son of Bennett Strickland and Mary Hickman. It took a long time to gather adequate documentation for SAR. My National Number is 189388.If you would like additional information let me know."

Some online trees show that Ansel B. Strickland and Agnes Lewis were the parents of Artemus Montgomery Strickland, the husband of Annie McInvale.
