Sylvan LeRoy Tesar of Beaver Crossing, was born at his parents farm south of Beaver Crossing, Nebraska on February 22, 1933 to Louis and Clara (Capek) Tesar, the 2nd of 4 children and passed away Saturday, May 21, 2011 at the Friend Manor in Friend, Nebraska at the age of 78 years 2 months and 29 days. As a young boy he attended and graduated from Beaver Crossing Public School with the class of 1951. Sylvan served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict at Fort Bragg, NC and returned to Nebraska to farm in the Beaver Crossing area until his retirement in 1994. In 1955, he was united in marriage to Elaine Simacek and to this union two children, Ron and Cyndee were born. He later was blessed with a second marriage to Lois (Niewedde) Vollstedt, bringing three more children to his life, Lodeen, Arlen, and Cheryl. He later adopted Cheryl in 1965. Sylvan was a life-long farmer, farming west of Beaver Crossing until his retirement in 1994. His care of the land over the years was rewarded with a Seward County Conservation Award and also the National Achievement Award in 1969. After his retirement from the farm he built and lived in his log cabin home near Beaver Crossing until he entered the Friend Manor in March of 2009. He was a member of the Beaver Crossing United Methodist Church and was a lifetime member of the American Legion Holmes Post #178, serving as the District #12 Commander. He also was a member of the Forty and 8 in Lincoln. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and received a Master Angler award. He also enjoyed bowling, trap shooting, traveling to Branson, Missouri in the summer and winter vacationing in Mercedes, TX. He and his wife of 38 years, Lois, spent many enjoyable hours attending dances around the area with special times at the Flying V and Pla Mor Ballroom. He is survived by his children and spouses, Cheryl and Daniel Gray, Grand Island, NE, Myron "Ron" and Linda Tesar, Brooksville, FL, Cyndee Smith, St. Petersburg, FL, step children and spouses, Lodeen and Dennis Koranda, Jr., Seward, Arlen and Susan Vollstedt, Garland, grandchildren and spouses, Alexis Conway and Jentry Smith, St. Petersburg, FL, Shawn and Kim Mortensen, Norton, KS, Leah and Linc Reynolds, Huntsville, AL, Andy and Mandy Mortensen, Lincoln, McKenzie Mortensen, also of Lincoln, Kevin and Ginny Koranda, Rodney and Carmen Koranda, Bryan and Tracy Koranda, all of Seward, Jennifer and Jason Brase, Staplehurst, Julie and Chad Phillips, Garland, Janelle and Travis Schaefer, Seward, 19 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, brothers and sisters-in-law, Lloyd and Ardis Tesar, Aurora, Dr. Delbert and Rogene Tesar, Austin, TX, nieces, nephews, and spouses, Vim Tesar, Aleta Tesar, Landon Tesar, Allison Woodall, Tara Hanneman, Shari Krejcil, great nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Delmar Tesar, an infant son, Keith Tesar, his parents, Louis and Clara Tesar and his former spouses, Elaine and Lois A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at 4pm at the Beaver Crossing United Methodist Church with Rev. Betsy Galloway-Carew officiating. Burial of ashes with military honors conducted by Holmes Post #178 will be at the Bohemian National Cemetery in Milligan at 1pm also on Thursday. Memorials have been established and are directed in care of the family. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Beaver Crossing.

Notes:

Vaclav Svec and Marie Suda were early pioneers in Fillmore County. They lived all their married life on the farm which Vaclav homesteaded. The farm, still in the family, is one mile west of Milligan.

Vaclav Svec was born October 16, 1841, to Josef and Barbora Kippova or Kibova Svec in Zichovice, okres Stasecky, Bohemia. When he was 12, his mother died so he had to make his way in the world while still a young boy. He took up the trade of a cabinent maker. He came to America in 1869, following his trade of carpenter and farmer for a time in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Vaclav came to Nebraska two years later...filing the homestead entry at the Beatrice Land Office on April 17, 1871.

Marie Suda came to this country with her parents in 1868...(her) first home in America was Chicago, where the family remained until 1871. Leaving Chicago after the great fire, her parents, Frantisek and Karolina Klokanova Suda, homesteaded in Section 2 of Glengary Township.

Papers received from the Katolicky Dalnik, or Catholic Workman Insurance Company, state that John's father was Joseph Capek and his mother was Barbara Jakup. Other information stated he had one brother killed in the army and one sister, but no names were given. (Milligan, p 237).

Jan married Marie Kocal in Aug 1869 in Bohemia. Marie was born on 26 Aug 1847 in Lodenice, Nov? Stra?ec?, Bohemia; died on 3 Dec 1939 in Nebraska; was buried in Bohemian Brethren Cemetery (AKA Cesky Bratri Cemetery), Fillmore County, Nebraska. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Marie lived with her mother, Mary Kocal, and after Marie, her husband, and small son left for America; her mother married Joseph Krikava and this couple also came to America. The Krikavas had one daugher, Anna, and she married Stephan Hlina. Joseph and Mary Krikava are buried in the Catholic cemetery. (Milligan, p 237).

On the marriage license of her eldes son, Vaclav, she was instead listed as Mary ROZKOT.

Marie Kocal Capek was born August 26, 1847 in Lodenic, Czechoslovakia. She died after a short illness at the home of her oldest son, Vaclav, Sunday, December 3, 1939, at the age of 92 years, 3 months, and 7 days.

She was united in marriage to Jan Capek August 23, 1869, and in 1880 came to America with her husband and oldest son, Vaclav. They arrived in Baltimore, and from there headed straight west via Chicago to Exeter, where they were met by Frank and Anton Svec, and brought to the Svec home April 27, 1880.

They picked up farm jobs and both hired out as jobs were to be had. After some time they purhased the eighty where their son Anton now lives and built a sod house. Instead of living here, however, they rented a farm from Vaclav Bernasek, which was just a little more improved, and farmed it for eleven years. Then they moved back to the home farm, and commenced to build their fortune with the aid of their family of five boys and one girl. In October,1917, leaving the home place to their son Anton, they moved to Milligan.

After her husband's death June 15, 1934, grandmother continued living in town for about two years. Mrs. Fannie Kunce stayed with her. In November, 1936, with the assistance of her dearest friend and neighbor, Mrs. Albert Placek (deceased) she packed her belongings and moved to the home of her son Frank. The last two and a half years she lived with her son Vaclav.

The deceased is survived by her five sons, Vaclav, Frank, Anton, Joseph, and Rudolph, twenty-one grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Her only daughter Anne Smith, preceded her in death July 2, 1934.

The couple came to American in 1880, arriving in Baltimore, heading west via Chicago to Exeter. They were met by Frank and Anton Svec. After first working as farm hands for others, they purchased the eighty acres that great grandson Raymond Capek lives on today. The Capek's came to this country with the Herynk family who purchased eighty acres adjoining them. (Milligan, 237).

They traveled to America with the John CAPEK family, arriving at Exeter April 27, 1880. They were brought to the Anton and Frank SVEC home, and assisted them in brick making. They later purchased the n 1/2 SW 1/4 of Section 27, Glengary Township, from John VEJRASKA, and adding the S 1/2 of this quarter section in January of 1892, buying it from Vaclav VEJRASKA. (Milligan, p 299).

Anton married Terezie Vejraska. Terezie (daughter of Jan Vejraska and Rosalie Sladek) was born on 15 Oct 1852 in Lodenice, Nov? The biography of Anton J. Capek, Jr. in the Milligan book list his grandparents as "Joseph and Marie Vejraska Herynk," and goes on to note that they "came to America with the Capeks in 1880." (p 233). Their oldest son was born and died in Bohemia before they emigrated to the United States. (p 299).
