  1. 2.  John Jacob SchopfJohn Jacob Schopf was born on 16 Nov 1931 in Skagit County, Washington (son of John Jacob Schopf and Grace Miriam Poole); died on 31 Jul 2005 in Grant County, Washington.

    Notes:

In 1986, Philip Schopf reported that his parents were Jake and Isabelle Schopf, and that they were Baptist missionaries living in Taguaginitia De Norte, Brasil. Philip said he was the second born of their four sons. He indicated that both his parents were around age 62 in 1988.

In a brief biographical sketch of his father, Jake Schopf, Jr., writes that "Jake was a stand out athlete at Everett High School, where he lettered in Football, Basketball, Baseball and Track. He was offered full scholarships in football and baseball at several colleges but chose instead to attend a small Bible college in Los Angeles, California to prepare to be a missionary." He received his bachelor's degree from Los Angeles Baptist Theological Seminary.

Jake later wrote that his father "was born again and called to the ministry at age twelve through the ministry of John R. Rice. The day of his conversion he, along with some friends, went throughout Everett inviting people to come to the evangelistic services. As a young man at Calvary Baptist Church his heart was touched by the missionaries who filled the pulpit and taught Sunday School. Jake was a leader in the youth group....it was during this time that he first got to know the one who would become the love of his life, Isabelle Gates."

For over 40 years Jake and Isabelle served the Lord in various parts of Brazil; Ceara, Belem in Para, Sao Jose in Sao Paolo, and Brasilla. He retired from the foreign field to be Western Representative of Baptist Mid-Missions. Around 1992, Jake retired again and wound up first as interim pastor, and later as senior pastor, of First Baptist Church of Soap Lake, Washington.

He followed the trees west to Washington He worked his way up the career ladder until he became Mill Superintendent of the Day Lumber Company of Big Lake, Washington. At that time it was the largest mill in Western Washington."

*Note: The SSDI lists an Emma Poole of Portland whose date of death was 21 Dec 1990. I requested a copy of her Form SS-5 and it was issued in the name of Emma Georgiana Fort of 6095 W. Hall Street, Portland, Oregan. She was 39 years old at the date of the application, having been born on October 12, 1902 in LaMoure, North Dakota. Her parents were John Alfred Fort and Lewella Elizabeth Watts. She was not employed at the time she completed the application, on May 19, 1942. She must have later married a Poole, but currently there is not enough information to determine if she married one of Grace's brothers, or if there were several Emma Poole's in Portland. Her age seems appropriate to have been married to one of Grace's brothers. Perhaps obtaining a copy of her obituary would help resolve this one way or another.

His great-grandson and namesake, Jake Schopf of Kirkland, Washington, writes that Jacob "Jake left the family one day on the train to find work in Charlevoix, Michigan. He never returned." Jacob left to search for work around the same general time period as the sinking of the Champlain (more details about this accident appear in a Bob Miles re-write of an article in the Charlevoix Journal on June 23, 1887). J.M. Ingalls, also a descendant, speculates that Jake Schopf may have perished in this accident. It is also possible, based on prior health problems as reported by his family, that he may have suffered from a heart attack while searching for work.

According to Mae Schopf Ingalls, Jacob's family were heirs to the estate of Maria Schopf nee Zimmerman, deceased 23 June 1953 in Gerlingen, Germany. (These papers, containing a list of heirs as of 1962, were prepared by Ackermann of Hoerner-Bank gmbh Heilbronn a-n, Lohtorstrasse 26, Telefon 3428 und 3493, Telegramm-adresse: Hoernerbank Heilbronneckar).

Johann married Margaret Ann Irwin on 5 Jul 1870 in Montandon, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. Margaret (daughter of Joseph K. Irwin and Jane Lewis) was born on 19 Nov 1853 in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania; died on 4 May 1926 in Stanwood, Snohomish County, Washington; was buried on 6 May 1926 in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Mount Vernon, Skagit County, Washington. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Margaret Ann IrwinMargaret Ann Irwin was born on 19 Nov 1853 in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania (daughter of Joseph K. Irwin and Jane Lewis); died on 4 May 1926 in Stanwood, Snohomish County, Washington; was buried on 6 May 1926 in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Mount Vernon, Skagit County, Washington.

    Notes:

Jake Schopf writes that Margaret relatives had lived across from the Susquehanna River from Lewisburg for generations.

Both he and J.M. Ingalls indicate that Margaret is the daughter of Joseph K. IRWIN and Jane LEWIS. However, her death certificate, perhaps in error, lists her father as 'W. Irwin.' At the time of the 1870 census, Margaret appears to have been recently married to Jacob Schopf, and she in Jacob are living in the home of Joseph Irwin.

    Notes:

Cecelia Payne of New Brunswick, Canada read the microfilm copy of the marriage certificate of Edwin Poole and Janet White. She reported that Edwin Poole was listed as a Resident of St. John, was born in St. John, was a mechanic, and was the son of William and Mary Poole.

A lookup volunteer checked the 1912 and 1916 City Directories for Chelsea, but was not able to find either Edwin or Janet Poole listed.

I was not able to find either Edwin or Janet Poole in the 1920 Mass soundex. Could they already have moved from Mass and be in transit?

Jake Schopf writes that "Edwin was an adventurer. He homesteaded north of Edmondton, Alberta. He did some oil exploration. He signed up for the Canadian Expeditionary Forces and fought in World War I. He received a medal for bravery. He was never able to settle down long enough to enjoy the benefits of his investments. He played the concertina well."

Edwin married Janet Agnes White on 15 Dec 1888 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. Janet (daughter of Leslie White, Sr. and Elizabeth McFadden) was born on 10 Jun 1860 in Portland, St. John County, New Brunswick, Canada; was christened on 14 Nov 1860 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada; died on 28 Oct 1949 in Everett, Snohomish County, Washington. Notes:

According to her death certificate, filed by her daughter, Grace Schopf, she had lived in Everett for 13 years prior to her death (since approximately 1936), and although born in New Brunswick, Canada, she was a citizen of the U.S. The marriage register for Janet and Edwin show that Janet was born in St. John and a resident of St. John. Her parents were shown as Leslie and Elizabeth White. Her religion was listed as Baptist. (Courtesy of Cecelia Payne)

Witnesses to the marriage were David McFadden and William Poole of St. John, New Brunswick, Canada (Courtesy of Cecelia Payne) Dorothy Wiggs, a family researcher, wrote that Edwin and Janet separated, and that he moved to Edmondton, Alberta, Canada and lived in a home there until his death. Janet remained in the States and lived with her daughter Grace, whom the family always knew as big Grace.

    Notes:

    Married:
Worthy and Harriett were living in Cass County, Minnesota as of the 1900 and 1910 census. At the time of the 1900 census, he was listed as William, perhaps in error. His occupation was shown as railroad laborer. His date of birth, perhaps also in error, was shown as October 1847. The 1900 census showed that Worthy and Harriett had been married 16 years (ca 1884). Harriet was listed as the mother of 11 children, 7 of whom were still living. The six children listed at home at the time of the 1900 census were William, Claricy, Lydia, Viola, Harry and Frederick. Charles ASHLAND and Charley LEAKE were living in their home as boarders. William was shown as a railroad laborer.

The 1910 census shows that both were married once, and had been married 37 years (which would push the marriage date back to ca 1873). The census further shows that Harriett was the mother of 12 children, 7 of whom were still living. Of the six children listed at home in 1900, only Harry was still at home. Perhaps Frederick, who should still have been living at home at age 10, had died. An additional son, 7 year old Henry, was listed as well.

According to Jake Schopf, they lived in Everett, Washington for a few years and then moved to Butte County, California.

Kristine Hammond also lists them as the parents of Noel, Ellen, Emma and Sybil. As none of these children are on either the 1900 or 1910 census, perhaps they were among the five children who died.

    Children:
    1. 6. William Ira Gates was born on 6 Jan 1886 in Iowa; died on 26 Jun 1964 in Butte County, California.
    2. Clarissa Gates was born in Mar 1889 in Iowa.
    3. Lydia Gates was born in Mar 1891 in Iowa.
    4. Viola Gates was born in Feb 1893 in Iowa.
    5. Harry O. Gates was born in May 1897 in Minnesota.
    6. Frederick Gates was born in Mar 1900 in Minnesota; died before 1910.
    7. Henry Gates was born about 1903 in Minnesota.

  7. 14.  James Matthew Livingston was born about 1855 in New York; and died.

    Notes:

Per Jake Schopf, he was a teamster, using horse drawn carts to move goods from place to place. Jakes lists him as being born in Michigan, but both census reports (below) instead show his place of birth as New York.
