Alton Crawford

Notes:

There is an Alton E. Crawford (28 Jan 1914-14 Dec 1986) listed on FindAGrave as buried in Fresno Memorial Gardens, Fresno, CA. The California Death index shows he was born in Texas, but that his mother's maiden name was BONDS. As the year of birth is also off by about 2 years, more research should be done to determine if these records are for the same Alton Crawford.

A Reprint from "The Champion"- 3-21-1923:

The remains of Lloyd Crawford buried at Shelbyville Sunday afternoon. Being brought from Haynesville, La., the day before where he died in a hospital.

Mr. Crawford was working in the Smackover oil field and was injured in an accident and was carried to the hospital for treatment. It is said that he sustained a fall and a pipe penetrated the thigh from which blood poison set up and which caused his death.
He was reared in the Shelbyville community being a son of Poly Crawford. He is survived by his wife and seven children, and many other relatives.

The family moved to some point near the oil fields last fall. Mr. Crawford was a splendid citizen and his death will be regretted by his many friends and relatives.

The following is funished by a friend.

"Mr. Lloyd Crawford was born in Shelby county, the 23'd of March 1880. He was con verted and united with the church in young manhood, thus heeding the admonition of the Wiseman when he said, "Remember now the days of thy creator in the days of thy youth." He was an honest and hard working man. He looked well to his household while adverse circumstances prohibited the accumulation of very much of this world's goods, yet he is to be praised for honesty, and for the tenderness with which he cared for his family, then let us think like Lazarus of old, he has been transported to Abraham's bosom.

He was married December 21, 1902 to Miss Sallie Willey. To this union was born seven children, all living and working in the oil fields.

After being hurt he was taken to a sanitarium where he stayed for about nine days. The death coming on the 17'th of March, 1923.

It seems that his death was untimely, but we know that god works all things to the best to those who love Him. So dear friends rely on the strong arm of Christ our Saviour and trust in Him and He will bring it to pass.

The funeral services was held at Shelbyville, interment in Shelbyville cemetary.

The pallbearers were W.B. Beck, W.County. Windham, Eugene Caldwell, R.B. Smith, Bert Morrison, and J.M. Green.

Lewis was married prior to his 1879 married to Mattie. The name of his previous wife is not currently known.

Obituary, from FindAGrave:

States the L. N. (Poley) Crawford, on of the most beloved of the pioneer settlers of this section, died at 12:00 Friday at the home of his son L.N. Crawford Jr., several miles east of Logansport.

He would have celebrated his 87'th birthday on Sunday, Feb. 2.

On Jan. 10, Mr. Crawford received serious burns when the cushion in his chair caught fire as he lighted his pipe. He attempted to smother the flames before he called for aid and was burned so severely that he never recovered.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. F.E. Bandy of Mooringsport; four sons, L.N. Crawford of Logansport, H.V. of Cayuga Texas Earl of Grand Bayou Louisiana, and C.M. of Dallas Texas 22 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren, four brothers, Sam, Charlie, George, and Edd Crawford, all of Joaquin Texas. Mrs. H.H. Nelson of Shreveport is a neice and Dr. J.E. Crawford of Ruston is a nephew.

The remains are at the Caraway funeral home in Logansport and will be conveyed to Shelbyville Texas at 3 pm Saturday, where funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church, with Dr. W.C. Windham, a lifelong associate, affiliating. Rev. W.O. Lynch, pastor of the Logansport Methodist Church, will assist.

Interment will be made in the family plot in the Shelbyville Cemetary.

Looking for any further info on Mattie Luma Whittlesey who married Lewis Norman "Napolean" "Poly" Crawford on 4-3-1879 in Sabine County Texas. Mattie was born 2-28-1859 in Sabine County, and died on 3-17-1898. She was the daughter of Joseph Adolphus Whittlesey and Annie Newton Bullock. Nancy (Mayo) Bishop writes that he was a minister of the M. E. Church, and buried at the M. E. Church in Center, Texas. He married second, after Elizabeth died, Martha Brittle on 23 Dec 1875 in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. Martha is also buried at Shelbyville, with her dates shown as 1840-1888. The 1880 census shows that they also had three sons.

Joseph married Elizabeth F. McWilliams on 9 May 1850 in Sabine County, Texas. Elizabeth (daughter of Robert McWilliams and Mary Ann Cannon) was born on 25 Nov 1833 in South Carolina; died on 31 Aug 1873. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

"Records of the WHITTLESEY family have been traced to 664 A.D. in Whittlesey Mere, County of Cambridge, England. William Whittlesey (1300-1374) was the 57th Lord Archbishop of Canterbury (1368-1374). John Whittlesey came to America in 1623, and is a direct ancestor of Joseph Adolphus Whittesley b 1820. He was in Texas before 1840. In 1841, he was co-editor of the REDLANDER in San Augustine. He taught school, served in the Mexican War, was County Judge of Sabine County, and Postmaster of Sabinetown." (White and Toole, p 82).

The death certificate of his eldest son, Oscar, instead showed that Joseph was born in Virginia.

Joseph married Anne "Annie" Newton Bullock on 19 Apr 1849. Anne (daughter of Lemuel Bullock and Martha L. Day) was born about 1833 in Mississippi; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

The daughter of Lemuel Bullock and Martha Day. Dale Rubel shows that she was born in Holmes County, Mississippi, and died ca 1912 in Short, Texas.
