  1. 4.  Benjamin Franklin McLemore was born on 16 Jun 1845 in Lee County, Virginia (son of Hiram Y. McLemore and Margaret Fairchild); died on 29 Apr 1923 in Wise County, Virginia; was buried in Wise County, Virginia.

    Notes:

Colby Fugate McLemore writes that Benjamin F. McLemore, son of Hiram, was born June 16, 1845 in Lee County, Virginia, where his parents lived a few months after his birth, moving into the mountains of Kentucky. The 1850 census instead shows his place of birth as Tennesse, and later records place it in Kentucky.

He notes that he was a Civil War veteran, and received a flesh wound to the temple during a battle. When he first placed his hand on his temple after the mini-ball creased it, he thought he had received a shot through the brains.

Colby McLemore also cites a manuscript of confederate records in the Archives Division of the Virginia State Library which state: "Benjamin Franklin McLemore was a private in Co. G, Third Regiment, Kempers's Brigade--The Rough and Ready Guards (Southhampton County) - commanded by Captains Richard P. Clements, Henry S. Howard, John W. Harrison, Nathaniel T. Francis, enlisting in 1861 and served four years." It appears that this record is being cited erroneously, as it more likely pertains to the Benjamin Franklin McLemore who was a resident of Southhampton County, Virginia...the son of James McLemore and Martha Barkley and husband of Rosa Westbrook. This other Benjamin Franklin McLemore was six years older than Benjamin, the son of Hiram.

Benjamin was said to have had the nicest team of black horses and surry in the county, keeping the harness highly polished and taking great pride and care of his team. Dressed in black with a tall black hat, neighbor Marshall Walker (Wrady) Vicars, Sr. said he "cut quite a figure."

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Hiram Y. McLemore was born between 1817 and 1820 in Kentucky; and died.

    Notes:

His middle name has been speculated to be Young.

Duane Hansen (mr_duey2000@yahoo.com) shows he was born ca 1817 in Lee County, Virginia, and died on 22 April 1887 in Breathitt County, Kentucky.

Colby Fugate McLemore writes that "Hiram Y. McLemore served in the Union Army. His son Benjamin F. McLemore served in the Confederate Army. They were on leave at the same time on several occasions. They would leave their arms with local Confederate or northern supporters during the time of their mutual leave at home. Hiram Y. McLemore, from other records, apparently reared his family in Perry County (Hazard area), Kentucky."

Both Duane Hansen and Colby McLemore believe that Hiram McLemore is a son of John McLemore and Ruth Steelman of North Carolina and Kentucky, making him a grandson of Ephraim McLemore and Hannah Hudspeth. This has not been proven, however.

Please email if you know more about Hiram Y. McLemore, or his parents.

(Medical):A direct male descendant, still bearing the McLemore surname, was part of the Morrision DNA study (FTDNA kit #93948). He did not match either of the two McLemore subgroups also enrolled in this study.

    His Y-DNA values follow

    (393-390-19-391-385a-385b-426-388-439-389.1-392-389.2)

    13-23-15-11-11-15-12-12-12-13-13-29

He is part of the R1b1b2 Haplogroup. He is four steps removed, however, from the other R1b McLemore's in the study, clustered in group O. Nor does he have matches with the other 5 members with the McLemore surname in the study. It is possible that there were several founding McLemore lines, instead of just one as has been long assumed. Or another possibility could be that undisclosed adoptions have occurred through the generations of descendants of both James and/or Abraham.

The members of R1b are believed to be the descendants of the first modern humans who entered Europe about 35,000-40,000 years ago. Those R1b forebearers were the people who painted the beautiful art in the caves in Spain and France. They were the contemporaries (and perhaps exterminators) of the European Neanderthals. R1b is the most common Y haplogroup in Europe - more than half of men of European descent belong to R1b. Fourteen of the 30 most common haplotypes in the YSTR.org database are typical of R1b.
