Excerpt from the Many, Louisiana Banner
Died at his residence 5 miles west of Many, February 19, 1892, Mr. John Davis, aged 74 years. Mr. Davis was born in Gallatin, Tennessee, and had been a resident of Sabine Parish for nearly fifty years, having settled here in 1843 about the time of the formation of the parish. He followed his trade of carpenter for three years, and in 1846 marrid Miss Maria E. Buvens, and then began farming and followed it successfully until his death. He was converted to the Catholic Church soon after his coming to this parish and until the time of his death was one of her most faithful and cherished members. He served as the recorder of Sabine Parish for a number of years and made an efficient officer. He was ever a friend to the needy and no one in any station in life could say naught against him. The Catholic Church and schools here are silent witnesses to his charity and generosity. He leaves an aged and loving wife, three sons and on daughter to mourn his loss to whom he was very kind and loving father. And his numerous relatives and hosts of friends pay tribute to his memory. The Banner extends its deepest sympathy to the bereaved relatives and friends. A true man in every respect, let his epitaph be: True to his God, true to his country and true to his friends. (Casagranda, 1850 census, 98).
