Mrs. E.B. McMillin Funeral Held At Baptist Church Here Tuesday

Funeral services for Mrs. Geneva Mae McLemore McMillin, 75- year-old Welsh resident for the past 51 years, was held on Tuesday, at the First Baptist Church in Welsh at 2:30 p.m. With Rev. Mike Gilchrist, former Baptist pastor in Welsh, and Rev. Dore Langley, pastor of the Thornwell Baptist Mission, officiating . Burial followed in Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Fineral Home.

Mrs. McMillin had passed away on Monday morning September 25, 1961, at the Lake Charles Memorial Hospital at 6:15 a.m. where she had been taken from the Welsh General Hospital on Sunday.

A native of Auburn, Kentucky, she had been an active member of the Welsh community for half a century and was a devoted wife and mother.

She is survived by her husband, E.B. " Red " Mc Millin of Welsh; by two sons, Eldridge McMillin and Raymond McMillin of Welsh; by one daughter, Mrs. James ( Zeda ) Hall of Welsh; by two brothers, Guy McLemore of Welsh, and Shelby McLemore of Booneville, Indiana; by two sisters, Mrs. Rufus ( Euva ) Oliver of Welsh, and Mrs. C.M. ( Ivy ) Robertson of Beaumont, Texas.

Pallbearers were Tommy B. Jones, J.W. Kippers, John Ed Freeland, Earl D. Ship, Jr., Robert Taylor, James Epperly, Billy Loewer, and Walter Bertrand.

Geneva married Elvis Buckner "Red" McMillen on 19 Nov 1907 in Logan County, Kentucky. Elvis was born on 1 Sep 1887 in Auburn, Logan County, Kentucky; died on 25 Jul 1970 in Welsh, Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana; was buried on 27 Jul 1970 in Oaklawn Cemetery, Welsh, Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana. Notes:

In 1900 he was living in the home of David J. McLemore and Eliza Hudson McLemore of Logan County as of the 1860 census. He and David J. McLemore appear to have been first cousins.

I was unable to locate him as of the 1870 census, but in 1880, he was living in the home of another first cousin, Sarah McLemore Hoskins, still in Logan County.

FindAGrave indicates he was buried in the Oaklawn Cemetery, Welsh, Jefferson Davis Parish, LA. They also show on that website that he served in "Co. F, 26 Ky Inf", which is inscribed on his headstone.

Porter Marshall shows that he was a served for the C.S.A. during the Civil War. This is NOT correct.

A descendant emailed: "John Fielding McLemore (b. 1844) was a Union Soldier, he was not part of the CSA as listed on the site. The 26th KY Infantry was Union (See Wikipedia and the National Park Service Website) Also, if you look at his grave marker it bears the emblem of the Great Seal of the United States. Last, my grandfather told me that his "grandaddy" ( John F. McLemore) served in the Union Army and "was wounded 8 times." Of course, I have no proof that he was wounded 8 times but as a boy growing up in the south, it stuck with me that one of my ancestors was a Union Soldier."

John married Mary Jane Maben on 20 Jul 1881 in Russellville, Logan County, Kentucky. Mary (daughter of Cyrus Alexander Maben and Margaret E. Mabin) was born on 13 May 1852 in Russellville, Logan County, Kentucky; was buried in Oaklawn Cemetery, Welsh, Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Assumed to be part of the "large family" raised by Joel and Temperence McLemore based on his age and census location. Not proven.

John and Caroline and their four children can be found on the 1850 census, but as of 1860 the family is no longer together. It appears likely that John and Caroline died prior to this date, and that their children were scattered among differing families in Logan County. Hiram D, the oldest, was a boarder in the Lamb home. John, the next eldest, was living with his first cousin, David J. McLemore. The two youngest, Mary and James, were living in the home of their presumed uncle, Goodwin McLemore.

Cyrus A. Maben is listed as a Private in Company K, 8 Kentucky Calvary, Union Army, on the Ancestry.com Civil War Service Records database. Ancestry's US Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles shows the same information, and additionally lists his dates of service as 6 Sep 1862 through 23 Sept 1863, mustering out in Russellville, KY.

Cyrus appears to have later married Bettie Borum, on 21 May 1892 in Logan County, KY. Bettie Maben was listed as widow on the US Civil War Pension Index, Roll number T288_293.


Said to be the son of John Maben JR and Nancy Henderson, and to have died on 15 Jan 1909 Logan County, KY.

The index of the Kentucky Death Records on Ancestry.com show her as a resident of Logan County, KY at the time of her death. She was shown as born ca 1821 in Logan County, to James MABIN and W M MABIN, and her name at death was Margaret MABIN. She was listed as Mulatto, and her date of death was shown as 29 Apr 1857. The actual image of the death record, however, shows Marggaret Mabin as White, age 36, Female, Occupation Housewifery maid DOD April 29, with her cause of death be Inf???tion of brain.

FindAGrave instead lists her parents as John MABEN and Nancy HENDERSON Maben, who also have memorials on that website.
