Edward Frank Sluka 62, of Roca, passed away Sunday (9/2/07). Born to Edward J. & Mildred E. (Kottas) Sluka on December 28, 1944 in Geneva, Nebraska. Ed was raised on a farm west of Milligan, Nebraska and attended grade school at a rural school. He attended Milligan High School and then went to work for Sweeds Garage in Milligan, as well as farming to help his father who was in poor health. Ed joined the National Guard in 1965; Ed spent 23 years with the National Guard & Army Reserves and was a member of the Hickman Legion.

Ed was married to Shirley A. Taylor on March 18, 1967 in Geneva, Nebraska and to this union 3 children were born, Michael Ray, Tamara Jo & Roger Edward. Ed and Shirley celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this past March. Ed farmed until the fall of 1971, when he moved his family to Lincoln and then to an acreage south of Lincoln. He spent the next 35 years working as a mechanic, retiring in July of 2006. Ed loved working on vehicles and raising his garden, but his favorite things to do were hunting, fishing, and helping his sons on their race cars. It was hard to keep Ed away from farming. He worked his acreage and would save one week of his vacation each year to go to Geneva and help with harvest. Ed's pride and joy were his children and grandchildren. However, Ed was known as "Dad" or "Pops" to many more than just his 3 children, including his adopted family the Mazza's.

Survivors: wife, Shirley Sluka, Roca; sons & daughters-in-law, Michael & Angie Sluka, Roger & Natalie Sluka, both of Linocln; daughter & son-in-law, Tamara & Steven Garza, Panama, Neb.; grandchildren, Cody Sluka, Ashley Sluka, Briar Sluka, Brody Sluka, Colby Sluka, Brandon Garza, Hannah Garza, Taylor Sluka & Samuel Sluka; father-in-law, John Taylor, Sr., Geneva, Neb.; sisters-in-law & spouse: Sharon Elznic, Sandra & Norman Girmus, all of Geneva, Neb.; a host of family and friends. Preceded in death by: parents; grandparents; mother-in-law, Wilma Taylor; brothers-in-law, Larry Elznic & John Taylor Jr. & Godson Ryan Milem.

Services: 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 7, 2007 at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 South 14th Street, 68512. Visitation: Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., all at the funeral home. Memorials to the family.

Emma (daughter of Anton Herynk and Terezie Vejraska) was born on 14 Feb 1893 in Fillmore County, Nebraska; died on 16 Apr 1980 in Geneva, Fillmore County, Nebraska; was buried in Bohemian National Cemetery (Milligan South), Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska. Frank attended school through the eighth grade, after which time he started farming with his dad. After he married Emma, they farmed together for the next fifty years. Frank and Emma's son, Edward Frank now farm on the home place.

Matej married Marie Polak. Marie was born on 15 Aug 1850 in Vzarckavricich, Bohemia; died on 4 Mar 1927. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

At the time of the 1900 census, she was living in Liberty Township, Fillmore County, Nebraska with her six youngest children, ans shown as a widow, born in August 1852 in Bohemia. The 1910 census showed her to be the mother of 13 children, eight of whom were still living.

Frank came to the US at the age of 18, living with his family in Chicago for two years before emigrating in 1870 to the home of his uncle and aunt, John and Katherina PLACEK in Saline County, He received a land patent for 80 acres on May 16, 1878. He farmed and also went into partnership with Vaclav BULEN in a hardware and implement business after the village of Milligan was platted.

Marie (daughter of Jan "John" Bernasek and Marie Fryckova) was born in Jul 1851 in Brodeslavy, Kralovice, Plzen, Bohemia; died on 6 Sep 1930 in Nebraska; was buried in Bohemian National Cemetery (Milligan South), Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska. They traveled to America with the John CAPEK family, arriving at Exeter April 27, 1880. They were brought to the Anton and Frank SVEC home, and assisted them in brick making. They later purchased the n 1/2 SW 1/4 of Section 27, Glengary Township, from John VEJRASKA, and adding the S 1/2 of this quarter section in January of 1892, buying it from Vaclav VEJRASKA. (Milligan, p 299).

Anton married Terezie Vejraska. Terezie (daughter of Jan Vejraska and Rosalie Sladek) was born on 15 Oct 1852 in Lodenice, Nov? The biography of Anton J. Capek, Jr. in the Milligan book list his grandparents as "Joseph and Marie Vejraska Herynk," and goes on to note that they "came to America with the Capeks in 1880." (p 233). Their oldest son was born and died in Bohemia before they emigrated to the United States. (p 299).
