I.T. Strickland, 89, died in the Avalon Place Nursing Home, Kirbyville, TX, after an illness. I.T. Strickland was born in Hemphill, TX, to the late Jim and Mollie Strickland where he lived all his life. I.T. was a retired truckdriver in the logging industry and a member of the Hemphill Church of God.

Mr. Strickland is survived by his wife Louise Strickland of Hemphill, his son Marvin Strickland and his wife Sue of Buna, his daughter Melba Ellis and her husband Bobby of Tulsa, OK, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Larry Strickland.

Visitation will be Monday, May 3, 2010, at 8:00 am until service time at 10:00 am in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel, 510 Starr ST. Hemphill, TX. Burial will follow in the Springhill Cemetery near Hemphill.

Services are under the direction of Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr Street, Hemphill TX 75948.

Louise Strickland, 87, died in Tulsa, Oklahoma on May 31, 2012. Louise was born in Jena, Louisiana to Genie Edwards and Cora Humble Edwards, on December 26, 1924. She resided in Hemphill, Texas most of her life and was a member of the Church of God.
Louise is survived by her son Marvin Strickland and wife Sue of Buna; her daughter Melba Ellis of Tulsa Oklahoma; seven grandchildren Michael Ellis, David Ellis, Bobby Ellis, Norris Ellis, Lisa Strickland, Scott Strickland, and Penny Garsee; and eleven great grandchildren Josh Ellis, Oakdon Ellis, Shelby Ellis, Liz Ellis, Emily Ellis, Noah Ellis, Analiece Ellis, Kaycee Geneva, Zachary Garsee, Britney Nelson, and Ashley Fehrenbacher.

She was preceded in death by her husband I.T. Strickland and her son Larry.

Visitation will be at Starr Funeral Home beginning at 9:00 am., Saturday Morning, June 2, 2012 and will continue until service time at 11:00 am, in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services will follow in the Springhill Cemetery near Hemphill.

James married Mary "Mollie"Elizabeth Carter in 1897. Mary (daughter of Bradford Stephen Carter and Elizabeth Margaret Mason) was born on 18 Aug 1882 in Pendleton, Sabine Parish, Louisiana; died on 2 Oct 1956 in Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas. Notes:

Called Mollie. At the time of the 1900 Sabine County census, her date of birth was instead shown as August 1879, as was that of her brother, Albert, living with Mollie and James in 1900. It appears they were twins. However other records seem to indicate their year of birth as 1882.

At the time of the 1910 Sabine County Census, they had been shown as married for 11 years, and as the mother of six children, all living.

Married:
Carl Evans also lists a daughter "Abbie" who is not shown on the various census listings for the family. Perhaps she died young.

Their double tombstone at Spring Hill Cemetery reads "Dear parents, though we miss you much we know you rest with God."

Bradford Carter, his son Ben, and grandson, John Bradford owned and operated Carter's Ferry for many years. (White and Toole, p 41).

Leatha Betts, a descendant of his eldest daugther, Sarah Elizabeth, show that Bradford was married five times in total, and also indicates that he had three children with Frances Procell, though they were never married. Frances Procell was listed as a housekeeper, age 22, in his home at the time of the 1870 census. Frances Precell, shown as widowed, lived in the adjacent residence at the time of the 1880 census with her three children, Luisia, 14, William, 7, and Lizzie, 5.

Bradford's grave is marked "CSA Homeguards, Masonic Lodge #88"
