  1. 2.  Amos McLemore was born on 3 Dec 1829 in Chickasaw County, Mississippi (son of William McLemore and Martha Joiner); died on 2 Sep 1903 in Lauderdale County, Mississippi; was buried in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Meridian, Lauderdale County, Mississippi.

    Notes:

Rev. William P. McLemore, in a section on his website devoted to Notable McLemore's (Website: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/3476/mclem1.htm), has the following biography:

Amos McLemore was a planter of Lauderdale County, Mississippi, born in Chickasaw County, December 3, 1829. His parents, William and Martha (Joiners) McLemore, were born in North Carolina and Tennessee in 1800, respectively, moved to Covington County when he was but a child, and in 1838 they moved to Lauderdale County and settled near where Meridian is now situated. Amos was married in 1855 to Miss Mary Jane McShan, of Lauderdale County, by whom he had nine children: William, Andrew, Virginia, Fannie, Acquila, Laura, Kirkland, and a son who lived only a month. At the opening of the Civil War, Mr. McLemore enlisted in the Confederate Army and upon the return of peace, he turned his attention to planting, notwithstanding the fact that, during the war, his plantation had been rifled of all valuables, and had grown up to weeds. He turned his attention to the culture of cotton, in which he was quite successful and made money. He owned one thousand acres of land, three miles northeast of Meridian, MS. He was considered a self-made man, well posted on general topics of the day, benevolent, charitable, and generous, but not active in politics. (Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Mississippi, Volume 2 (1891).

***Is this is stepsister, Sarah Alford Fortson? Some researchers speculate that she married her step brother, William McLemore. If so, this would make her both a stepsister and sister-in-law to Amos. Sarah Alford Fortson, however, was born ca 1837 in Alabama. This would make her around age 43 in 1880. Lauderdale, Mississippi marriage records show a Mrs Mary Fortson and William McLemore marrying on 12 July 1840.

FindAGrave also links an additional daughter, Corina Victoria McLemore (1884-1902) to them. She is also buried at the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetety in Meridian. This should be verified due to the significant gap in time between her birth and her older siblings, as well as the age (46) of Mary Jane McShan McLemore at the time of Corina's birth. Finally, a Corina McLemore, born Feb 1884 per census records, was living in Lauderdale County, Mississippi in the home of William F. McLemore and Alice Shackleford.

    Children:
    1. William F. McLemore was born about 1857 in Lauderdale County, Mississippi; and died.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  William McLemore was born between 1800 and 1804 in South Carolina (son of Amos McLemore and Equilla ???); died in Feb 1853 in Meridian, Lauderdale County, Mississippi.

    Notes:

Mark Freeman writes that "1840 Lauderdale Co., MS Census shows the Wm McLemore household to consist of 1 male under 5 (William)?, 3 males 5-10 (Richard and Wm Fortson & Joseph Fortson), 1 male 10-15 (Amos), Wm 30-40, 1 female under 5 (Sarah A Fortson) 1 female 5-10 (Francis), 1 female 10-15 ?(Rebecca), 1 female 30-40 Mrs. Mary Fortson now McLemore. William seems to have temporarily left the children after Martha's death and then re-assembled the family when he married Mary Alford."

*It has been shown on several online trees, but has not been proven, that William McLemore and Sarah Fortson, step-siblings, has their first child shortly after this census. In 1860, a Sarah McLemore can be found as a widow with four children, and the head of a household in Lauderdale county that includes her younger half-brother [and/or brother-in-law John]. John was the first child born to Wm McLemore by his second wife, Mary Alford, and born ca 1843

William married Martha Joiner about 1827. Martha was born between 1800 and 1806 in Tennessee; died before Jul 1840 in Meridian, Lauderdale County, Mississippi. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Martha Joiner was born between 1800 and 1806 in Tennessee; died before Jul 1840 in Meridian, Lauderdale County, Mississippi.

    Sometimes shown as JOINERS.

    Notes:

    Married:
They may also be the parents of Richard Seth "Dick" McLemore(born ca 1830) and Rebecca McLemore (born ca 1834). Those two children are listed by Mark Freeman, but not other researchers.

    Children:
    1. 2. Amos McLemore was born on 3 Dec 1829 in Chickasaw County, Mississippi; died on 2 Sep 1903 in Lauderdale County, Mississippi; was buried in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Meridian, Lauderdale County, Mississippi.
    2. Richard "Dick" Steth McLamore was born on 21 Sep 1830 in Virginia; died on 16 Jun 1906 in Winn Parish, Louisiana; was buried in Mount Zion Cemetery, Wheeling, Winn Parish, Louisiana.
    3. Francis T. McLemore was born about 1834 in Mississippi; and died.
    4. Rebecca McLemore was born about 1834 in Mississippi; and died.
    5. William McLemore, Jr. was born about 1836 in Mississippi; and died.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Amos McLemore was born between 1760 and 1766 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina (son of Moses McLemore and ??? ???).

    Notes:

James L. McLemore, the author, and Mark Freeman both show that Amos was a son of Moses McLemore and grandson of Wright McLemore. However, another researcher, Jim White, does not think Amos descended from the Wright McLemore family. In January, 2009, he posted to Mark Freeman's McLemore online tree:

"Check the 1820 Giles County Tennessee Census and explain who Burwell and John McLemore are on that census..... Someone missed a necessary fact somewhere...Amos and his family did not descend of any Wright McLemore."

Some researchers also show them as the parents of Lavina, Matthew and Louisa.

Larry Kingsley is one such researcher. He shows that Lavina married John J. JOHNSTON, and that they had a large family.

  2. 9.  Equilla ??? was born between 1760 and 1762 in North Carolina; died after 1860 in Mississippi; was buried in McLemore Cemetery, Meridian, Lauderdale County, Mississippi.

    Notes:

Mark Freeman's notes for Equilla Byler http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~markfreeman/mclemore.html

Her surname, often repeated, is not certain. May be Aquilla Bierly.

She is also called Aquilla Byler, or Equilla Tiner (1850 census, listed as 90 years old; 1860 census, 98 years). She likely married 2nd Mr. Tiner.

Abraham & Jacob, were neighbors of the McLemores in Bedford & Giles Co. TN. When Amos McLemore bought land in Giles Co. in 1812, Abraham Byler, Jr. was one of the chain bearers for the survey. When Amos sold land there in 1816, Jacob Byler was a witness to the sale.

Byler is often described as a Swiss name, descendants of the Beiler family that immigrated from Bern, Switzerland to Pennsylvania. One family was that of Jacob Franklin Byler, born about 1765 in Pennsylvania - went with his parents to (now Rowan Co.) North Carolina where he later married Bathsheba Oxford, daughter of Samuel Oxford and Bathsheba Barrett.

Samuel Oxford's wife Bathsheba Barrett was the daughter of Jonathan Barrett (Perrot) and Jar Fly Jarman, said to have been a full blood Catawba Indian.

Some of the descendants of this family went through Tennessee. There is not a known link to this Equilla Byler. A lot of info is available on the Byler family.

When Amos McLemore bought land in Giles Co. in 1812, Abraham Byler, Jr. was one of the chain bearers for the survey. When Amos sold land there in 1816, Jacob Byler was a witness to the sale. It is possible that the surname for Equilla / Aquilla was taken from this, and not a marriage record.

A two page document entitled "McLemore History" by Rueben McLemore, Jr." states that when Richard McLemore "came to Lauderdale county he brought with him an old relation, a Mrs. Tiner. When she died he buried her behind the church he had built. One after another his family was added to the same plot until, after some time, the McLemore Cemetery was instituted and given to the usage of the public." The McLemore Cemetery is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and is located at the corner of Sixth Street and Tenth Avenue. Others buried there include victims of the 1871 riot and the 1878 yellow fever epidemic.
