It appears he could be a son of Thomas (Theodrick? Jr.) Carter and Celia Ann McDonald of Henrico County, Virginia. They migrated from Henrico to Halifax County, VA, and then later to Mississippi. The family later moved to Mississippi.

However, Jessica Green instead shows Caroll Johnson Carter as a son of Thomas B. Carter and Susanna Ann Winn, being a grandson of Theodrick Carter.

A tree on Ancestry.com has a third set of possible parents, Thomas Carter and Susanna Powell. The ancestry tree also shows that Carroll married Juriah McLemore.
