  1. 2.  Gilliam McLemore was born between 1782 and 1784 in North Carolina (son of Ephraim McLemore, Jr. and Hannah Hudspeth); died about 1860.

    Notes:

James McKinney writes that he was born in Surry County, and was on the Rockcastle census in 1810 and on the 1811 tax list. he had 100 acres of land from the Thompson grant. he was on all Rockcastle census records from 1810 to 1860. He was also a veteran of the War of 1812.

MaryLynn Santa shows his wife was a SARAH, and instead shows the location of death as Rockcastle, Trigg County, Kentucky. There was a 60 year old Sarah living with Gilliam and his children at the time of the 1850 census, but she was listed after the rest of the family. Additionally, a 78 year old Sarah CURLY, widowed, was living with Gilliam's son Wright, and not with Gilliam at the time of the 1860 census.

Gillam came to Lincoln Co. Ky. and he made affadavit for Gestin Hudspeth Gentry, Ayres daughter, for her to get a Revolutionary Pension based on her husbands service.

Gilliam married ??? Kirby before 1822. ??? was born before 1802; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  ??? Kirby was born before 1802; and died.

    Notes:

According to Paul Williams, Gilliam's wife was thought to be Sarah Kirby. The death certificate of her daughter, Louisa, showed that her mother's maiden name was KIRBY.

    Children:
    1. Cynthia McLemore was born on 21 Jan 1818 in Rockcastle County, Kentucky; died on 6 Jan 1911 in Rockcastle County, Kentucky; was buried in Skaggs Creek Cemetery, Rockcastle County, Kentucky.
    2. John D. McLemore was born in Jan 1822 in Kentucky; died after 1900 in Rockcastle County, Kentucky.
    3. Wright McLemore was born on 24 Sep 1824 in Rockcastle County, Kentucky; died on 24 Mar 1904 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri.
    4. 1. Louisa McLemore was born on 21 May 1827 in Rockcastle County, Kentucky; died on 23 Dec 1910 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri; was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Ephraim McLemore, Jr. was born about 1738 in Surry County, North Carolina (son of Ephraim Macklemore and ??? ???); died in 1798 in Surry County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

James L. McLemore, III writes that "It is possibly the younger Ephraim who is listed in 1768 on the Rowan County tax list. Rowan County, NC lies about halfway between Charlotte and Winston-Salem, hence it is in the west-central portion of the state, far from the centers of early McLemore settlement. He is known to have died in 1798, at age 60, in Surry County, North Carolina, which lies northwest of Winston-Salem, along the Virginia line. He probably arrived there by 1781, when he witnessed the will of Joseph MASTERS dated June 14th of that year. Ephraim Macklemore Jr. owed certain monies to the estate of one Robert WALKER in 1784, which remained unpaid as late as 1786, all in Surry County. The first U.S. Census places him in Surry County in 1790, and his will was probated in that county in 1798.
    (James L. McLemore, III, pp 47, 48).

James McKinney shows an earlier arrival date to Surry County than James L. McLemore does. Mr. McKinney states that Ephraim was on the 1775 Surry County, NC Tax List. He also noted that in 1778 he entered 570 acres of land on the county line on a small branch of Hunters Creek, being the land "he now lives on."

James L. McLemore indicates that "In his will, he names his wife Hannah (who was left the use of all of his property while she remained a widow), sons Sterling, Wright, William, John, and Gilliam, and daughters Martha JONES, Kersey CONNA, Hannah McLemore, Rebecca McLemore, Fanny McLemore, and Sally McLemore. One of his executors was a Nicholas MASTERS; recalling that Ephraim Jr witnessed the will of Joseph MASTERS in 1781, it is possible that we have here a connection between the Masters family and Ephraim Jr."

Dr. Leverett also notes that Ephraim was listed in Captain Jeffrey's Company in 1754 of the Granville Co Militia (Colonial Granville Co and its People, Worth Ray). Vol. 22, p. 370-380 N.C. State Records: Ephraim McLemore Private in Captain Osborne Jeffrey's Company, Co. C. William Eaten's Regt, Granville Co., N.C, Oct 8, 1754. James McKinney instead shows that he served as a Private in the Reg. of Col. William Eaton of Granville Couny.

The 1790 Surry Co NC census shows 1 white male 16+, 3 white males 16-; and 5 females. The 1810 N.C. census shows an E. McLemore in Bladen Co. (Source: Dr. Rudy Leverett note card on Ephraim McLemore).

Ephraim married Hannah Hudspeth about 1760 in Surry County, North Carolina. Hannah (daughter of Ralph Hudspeth, Jr. and Catherine ???) was born between 1740 and 1745 in Virginia; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Hannah Hudspeth was born between 1740 and 1745 in Virginia (daughter of Ralph Hudspeth, Jr. and Catherine ???); and died.

    Notes:

    Married:
James McKinney writes that Ephraim's will listed his wife, Hannah and 11 children. The children were: Sterling, Wright, William, Martha, Cary, Hannah, Rebecca, Fanny, Gillum, John and Sally. He cites Surry Co N.C. Will Abstracts as his source.

    Children:
    1. Sterling McLemore was born about 1765 in North Carolina; died on 17 May 1814 in Fayette County, Kentucky.
    2. Wright McLemore was born after 1767 in North Carolina; died about 1829.
    3. Martha McLemore was born about 1773 in Granville County, North Carolina; died on 1 Jun 1798.
    4. Kersey McLemore was born about 1775 in North Carolina; died about 1798.
    5. Hannah McLemore was born about 1775 in North Carolina; died on 1 Jun 1798.
    6. Rebecca McLemore was born about 1779 in North Carolina; died on 1 Jun 1798.
    7. Fanny McLemore was born about 1779 in North Carolina; died on 1 Jun 1798.
    8. William McLemore was born between 1768 and 1785 in North Carolina; and died.
    9. 2. Gilliam McLemore was born between 1782 and 1784 in North Carolina; died about 1860.
    10. John McLemore was born between 1785 and 1790 in Surry County, North Carolina; died in in Kentucky.
    11. Sally McLemore was born between 1786 and 1791 in North Carolina; and died.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Ephraim Macklemore was born between 1709 and 1712 in Virginia (son of James Macklemore and Fortune Gilliam); died after 1787 in Northhampton County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

A biblical name. He was probably named for a McLemore Uncle. (James L. McLemore, III, p 40).

He was devised, under his father's Will, 80 acres on Peahill Creek which also fell in Northhampton County north of Roanoke. He seems to have remained there for some time. Two references can be found relating to him in July 1746. However, within about eight years, he is found serving in the Granville County Militia across the Roanoke. His son, Ephraim Jr, was only about 16, and hence probably too young to serve. He also witnessed the sale of land in Granville County in 1762, and bought two tracts himself, one of 250 acres and one of 110 acres (James L. McLemore, III, pp. 46, 47).

During the same period of time that Ephraim Jr was living in Surry County (1784-1787), an Ephraim McLemore lived in Northampton County with 10 members of his family. This likely was the elder Ephraim, still alive and living in his old homeplace, having reached the advanced age of between 70 and 75. If so, this is the last reference that can be ascribed to him. He left no will. There is also the less likely possibility that this was Ephraim Jr, living in Northampton, but operating his holding as far west a Surry County. (James L. McLemore, III, p 48).

Ephraim married ??? ???. ??? was born about 1709; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  ??? ??? was born about 1709; and died.

    Notes:

Believed by many to have the maiden name of WRIGHT, based on the name of their eldest son.

    Notes:

    Married:
Only two children are known with reasonable certainty: the older Wright McLemore, and the younger, Ephraim Maclemore Jr. (1738-1798). (James L. McLemore, III, p 47).

Thought by many to have married a woman whose last name was WRIGHT based on the name of his son. His brother, William, also named a son WRIGHT. They both may have married into the WRIGHT family, or it might be that the WRIGHT surname belonged to a common ancestor, and was not the last name of either of their spouses.

    Children:
    1. Wright McLemore was born after 1730 in North Carolina; and died.
    2. 4. Ephraim McLemore, Jr. was born about 1738 in Surry County, North Carolina; died in 1798 in Surry County, North Carolina.

  3. 10.  Ralph Hudspeth, Jr. was born about 1695 in Henrico County, Virginia (son of Ralph Hudspeth and Margaret Eyre); died in Nov 1777 in Surry County, North Carolina.
