    Notes:

    Jimmie Emil Kubicek, one of seven children of Emil and Anna Kotas Kubicek, was born on a farm near Oak, Nebraska, on February 3, 1907. He grew up and was educated at Oak, and farmed the family farm until retiring four years ago when they moved to Davenport.
    Jimmie was married to Florence Fitzwater on December 28, 1927, at Geneva, Nebraska. Two children, Gary and Ellen, were born to this marriage.

    ARVADA, Colo. - Kara Kay Knutson, 29, of Arvada died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at her home.

    Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Alma (Neb.) United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lorri Kentner officiating. Private burial will be at Nelson (Neb.) Cemetery before the memorial service.

    Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday at Banta-Torrey Funeral Home in Alma.

    She was born Feb. 4, 1981, in Hastings, Neb., to Richard and Kay (Overturf) Knutson.

    Survivors include her loving parents of Alma; sister, Beth Schweitzer and her husband, Jason, of Atlanta; nieces, Ava and Braylin Schweitzer of Atlanta; maternal grandmother, Ellen Overturf of Superior, Neb.; paternal grandfather, Meredith Knutson of Cambridge, Neb.; her aunts and uncles; eight cousins; and many, many friends.

    She was the second daughter in her family. Kara was baptized as an infant in March 1981 at the United Methodist Church in Davenport, Neb. She was later confirmed at First United Methodist Church in Alma. Kara was active in the United Methodist Church Youth Group while in high school.

    Kara attended Davenport Public School until 1990 when the family moved to Alma. Kara finished high school at Alma Public School as a member of the class of 1999. She attended Doane (Neb.) College and Colby (Kan.) Community College. She was a proud member of the Colby Community College Lady Trojan volleyball team.

    She attended Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Neb., where she received her associate science degree in surgical technology in 2004 and her associate's degree in nursing in 2006.

    Kara was employed as a home health nurse in Arvada. Kara loved being a nurse and working with all of her clients and their families. She was loved in return by all she cared for.

    Kara was involved in the MidAmerica Boston Terrier Rescue Association. Through this organization she adopted her own Boston, Lily. Lily was the light of Kara's life. Kara also loved antiques and collectables.

    Notes:

    He was the son of Matej Kubicek and Katerina Jelinek. Matej immigrated in 1873, along with his wife and his siblings, Josef Kubicek, Stela Kubicek (married a Sperek), and Katerina Kubicek (married a Laurenc).

    Matej was drafted into the German army as a young man. Worked as a Mason after his military service. Mathias and Teresa had 13 children, but only seven survived and reached adulthood. Their eldest son, Josef, was born soon after their marriage, and died as an infant during their ocean voyage to the United States. He was buried at sea. Their children Lillian, Estelle, Mary, Edward, and James were all born, and died at a young age, in rural Fillmore County, Nebraska.

    Matej and Teresa were naturalized on 4 June 1878 in Fillmore County, Nebraska.

    Matej married Teresa (Therezie) Hunzel on 14 Oct 1872 in Bohemia. Teresa was born on 12 Oct 1847 in Germany; died on 27 Apr 1930 in Nebraska; was buried in Apr 1930 in Bohemian National Cemetery (Milligan South), Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Frank came to the US at the age of 18, living with his family in Chicago for two years before emigrating in 1870 to the home of his uncle and aunt, John and Katherina PLACEK in Saline County, He received a land patent for 80 acres on May 16, 1878. He farmed and also went into partnership with Vaclav BULEN in a hardware and implement business after the village of Milligan was platted.

  1. 12.  Jan Kotas was born on 26 Jul 1829 in Kozojedy, Plzen, Bohemia (son of Martin Kotas and Mary Pipla); died on 22 Oct 1897 in Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska; was buried in Bohemian Brethren Cemetery (AKA Cesky Bratri Cemetery), Fillmore County, Nebraska.

    Notes:

    He was born to Martin or Mattias KOTAS. He emigrated from Bohemia in 1868, settling first in Chicago for two years. The family left Illinois in October, 1870, arriving at the homestead of his sister and brother-in-law, Katherine and John PLACEK, who lived in Section 12 of Big Blue Township in Saline County. John and sons Frank and Joseph walked to Fillmore County to claim homesteads, which they filed in Beatrice on October 17, 1870, at the same time filing their naturalization papers. They lived with bachelor homesteader Frank ZNAJEMSKY until their dugout was built on October 25, 1870. John received his patent on May 16, 1878. The first dugout school of District #44 was on the KOTAS homestead. John was also instrumental in getting a Catholic Church built on his land, serving in the puplit occasionally as their was not resident priest. He also helped establish Ceski Brati, a Catholic Cemetery. Later in life, John purchased addtional land from the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, making it possible to give each of his 7 surviving children a farm. He and Barbara retired to Milligan. While repairing the roof of his home, he fell and was impaled on their picket fence. The funeral was conducted at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and he was buried in Ceski Brati cemetery near his son. More than 100 buggies followed the hearse to the cemetery. He is buried under the name KOTTAS, even though his railroad documents and homestead documents were executed using KOTAS. His son, W.J. was administrator of his estate, so this may account for the change in spelling. (Milligan, p 356). He was the son of Martin KOTAS and Mary PIPLA. (Milligan, p 357).

    Notes:

    Ken Chromy shows he immigrated abord the ship "America" on 1 Nov 1869. He first went to Chicago.

    Came to the Milligan area in October of 1870. He and his son homesteaded the SW 1/4 of Section 10 in Glengary Township. Jan intially built a dugout 12 x 16 feet with two doors and two windows. The applications filed by Jan and Vaclav were signed with an 'X.' The same day, father and son applied for their naturalization papers in Gage County. Their final citizenship papers were received on 13 June 1876. By 1877, Jan had plowed and cultivated sixty of the eighty acres, built a sod stable, frame granary, bored a 40 ft well, and planted 700 forest and fruit trees. He received his land patent on May 16, 1878. (Milligan, p. 202)
