BEDDOE, EARL PERCY (1822-1876). Earl Percy Beddoe, pioneer civil engineer, was born on January 30, 1822, in eastern Tennessee, son of Philip Tolbert and Catherine (Parr) Beddoe. He married Martha Caroline Hembree on October 12, 1843, in Tennessee, and they had nine children. In 1845, after an education in civil engineering, Beddoe moved to Texas, lived in Marshall, where he built a tanyard, then in 1850 settled in Sabinetown, where he established a saddle and harness business. He served for a while there as school principal; he was named county surveyor of Sabine County and laid out the town of Hemphill as the new county seat in 1859. Beddoe acted as a courier during the Civil War , and as a civil engineer he figured in the planning of fortifications at Sabine Pass in 1863 (see SABINE PASS, BATTLE OF ). He helped plan and execute the embankments or breastworks fortifying Sabinetown in 1864. In 1869 or early 1870 the family moved to Sabine Parish, Louisiana, but soon after 1871 they moved to Navarro County, Texas, where Beddoe died on November 27, 1876, in Chatfield.

Virgie Speights writes, in OLD TIMERS OF SABINE COUNTY, that he established a tan yard, taught school and put in a stagecoach inn. He was also a surveyor and surveyed the town of Hemphill in 1858, when the county seat was moved from Milam. As many people objected to this move, the surveying was begun in the middle of the night. (p. 35).

There was an article featuring a photograph of Earl Percy Beddoe in the October 2, 2013 issue of The Sabine County Reporter. The article was a story about a recent Civil War reenactment at Sabine Pass, during which the William Henry Parsons Camp #415, Sons of Confederate Veterans honored Earl Percy Beddoe, and early resident of Sabine County, whose family later moved to Chatfield, a community in Navarro County, Texas, where the Parsons Camp is located.

Memorial Service planned for April 24 in Milam

A memorial service to honor Jacob "Jake" and Huldath (Luten) Crawford will be held Saturday, April 24 at the Old Milam Cemetery. The service will begin at 10 a.m. Jacob was a soldier of the Republic of Texas and a citizen of the Republic of Texas. Direct descendants will participate in the service. A history will be read by Jeffery Williams while the unveiling will be by Derrick Grant and Albert Williams. Jacob "Jake" Crawford was born March 15, 1792 in Onslow, NC, as the son of James Crawford and Sally Cotten. The Crawfords came to America from Scotland and were of Scotch-Irish descent. It is thought that the family originated somewhere around Kilburny. The family was said to have left their homeland to come to America in search of religious freedom, as was the case of many families during this time. (The exact dates of the family's arrival in America is still being researched, but it is suspected to be during the late 1600s to early-mid 1700s).

Jacob Crawford married Huldath Luten, also of North Carolina. Huldath was born August 30, 1794. There is not much information on Huldath in family records.

Jacob and Huldath had 11 children and adopted one granddaughter after their eldest son, John F. died in 1840.

Jacob and Huldath Crawford's family moved to the Republic of Texas in 1837. The family resided in or near Milam. Jacob had received land grants for his service in the Texas Revolution. The land grant states that he was a citizen prior to the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Jacob and Huldath Luten Crawford died in Milam. Records indicate that both died from influenza on September 15, 1859. They were buried in the same grave. Huldath and Jacob are buried in the Milam Cemetery located in Milam. The public is cordially invited to attend this special ceremony on April 24.

Nancy (Mayo) Bishop writes that he was the son of James CRAWFORD and Sally COTTEN of Onslow County, North Carolina. He was the grandson of William (Jr.) CRAWFORD and Catherine HOBBS and Samuel and Lydia COTTEN. For additional information on Jacob's ancestors, contact Nancy directly at:

    Notes:

Philip Tolbert Beddoe was Malvina Parr Beddoe's grandfather. He was the head of the American branch of the Beddoe family. On your page, you list him as being born "before 1802" and dying "yes, unknown." He was actually born in England on 19 July 1790 and he died in 1861 in Sabinetown, Texas. He is buried in Sabinetown.

He married Catherine Parr on 10 February 1820 in Moravintown, NC. [possibly Wachovia, North Carolina, settled by Moravian around 1753]. She died in 1873. Their son, Earl Percy Beddoe was born 30 January 1822. His daughter Malvina Parr Beddoe was born 18 August 1844. She married Pedras Philip Davidson 17 September 1865.

Are you descended from these Beddoes? If so, you are descended from Welsh royalty.

Email from "Beddoe Genealogist" byddw@yahoo.com on 7-17-2007.

Virgie Speights writes that Philip Tolbert Beddoe was one of six children born in East Tennessee to Thomas Beddoe, a son of Charles Beddoe and Lydia Nash of Withypool, England, who came to America and settled first in Philadelphia, later moving to Tennessee.
