Vaclav was the youngest member of a family of eight. His parents were Vaclav Charvat and Anna Charvat. He arrived in Galveston, Texas, December 25, 1905 at the age of 18, and became a naturalized citizen in the District Court, Lincoln, Nebraska, July 6, 1912. In 1917, he enlisted in the U.S. Army--serving in England and France. He was discharged on 15 April 1919. After the war, he worked in the banking industry at Havelock and Dorchester, Nebraska. James Kalivada, a good friend from Moore, Oklahoma, witnessed their marriage. The Charvat's travelled throughout the southwest. In 1936 alone, they traveled 8,000 miles with a car and trailer. (Milligan, p 248).
