Notes:

James McKinney indicated that Wright was on Skaggs Creek in 1806 paying taxes on 100 acres of Thompson's land. He was also on the 1810 and 1820 Census of Rockcastle County.

Richard Gentry made claim for Revolutionary service under the 1832 law. He said he was born in Lunenburg Co.Va. Dec.27, 1755. He resided in Union District near the Tiger River in 1780 he served under Col.James Cotton in the battle of Cowpens and battle of King's Mountian. Richard married in 1793 Gestin daughter of Ayres Hedgepeth. Soldier died in Rockcastle Co.Ky. Feb.13, 1836

On the 7th day of April 1855 Jestin Gentry aged 80 years a resident of Rockcastle Co. she states that her husband Richard Gentry rec'd $48.39 per. She states she was married to Richard Gentry in Surry Co.N.C. by William Elliot and her name before she marrried was Gestin Hudspeth. She was making claim for bounty land on the 3rd day of March 1855.

In Nov.17, 1842 Wright McClemore a resident of Lincoln Co.Ky. made an affadavit for Jenstin. He states "I lived about 4 miles from Gestin in Surry Co.N.C. He states do to the excessive rain he did not attend the wedding of Richard Gentry and Jestin but his neighbors did" He further states that Richard Gentry and his wife visited his father many times. "They had children in North Carolina and more after moving to Kentucky." He further states that his brother Gilliam made affadavit for Richard Gentry to receive his pension.

Revolutionary War Pension Applications, National Archives Microfilm. File W8844, (BLWt 26713-160-55): Richard GENTRY, widow Justina or Gestin, [also Justin, Justiney, Gestiney] of Rockcastle Co. KY. Credited with 13 months service as a private in SC militia.

Richard Gentry appeared in Rockcastle County court, KY, 12 Sep 1832, age 77 years as of next Dec. 27th [born 27 Dec 1755]. Testified that he had first volunteered for service in SC militia from Union District, SC, near the Tyger River [about 1780]... He gave his birthplace as Lunenburg Co. VA, and had lived three years in Lincoln Co. KY before moving to Rockcastle Co.

Gestin [Gentry] appeared in Rockcastle Co. court on 25 Nov 1839, age given as 70 years, to apply for widow benefits. She stated that she was married to Richard Gentry in the spring season of 1792 (she did not recall the month), and was married in [Surry Co., NC]. She stated that Richard died 13 Feb 1836.

Gestin appeared again on 23 Jun 1842, age given again as 70 years, to testify further as to Richard's war service. She stated that she knew Richard before and during his service, but she was young and she did not know how he entered the service or where he served except what Richard told her after they were married. She recalled that he entered service in SC--she was living at the time in NC. Nathaniel Aldridge, who lived 2 or 3 miles from Gestin in Surry Co. testified that her father was Ayres Hedgepe

Their marriage is listed, on Ancestry.com as "McLemore, Wright & Sarah Ransome, 16 May 1795, George HUDSPETH, bondsman. The book MARRIAGES SURRY COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA 1779-1868 is the source of this information.

This couple may be the parents of the Wright McLemore of Arkansas, who was born ca 1800 and died ca 1849 in Jefferson County, Arkansas. He might instead be the son of Sterling and Rebecca McLemore of Fayette County, Kentucky.

James L. McLemore, III writes that "It is possibly the younger Ephraim who is listed in 1768 on the Rowan County tax list. Rowan County, NC lies about halfway between Charlotte and Winston-Salem, hence it is in the west-central portion of the state, far from the centers of early McLemore settlement. He is known to have died in 1798, at age 60, in Surry County, North Carolina, which lies northwest of Winston-Salem, along the Virginia line. He probably arrived there by 1781, when he witnessed the will of Joseph MASTERS dated June 14th of that year. Ephraim Macklemore Jr. owed certain monies to the estate of one Robert WALKER in 1784, which remained unpaid as late as 1786, all in Surry County. The first U.S. Census places him in Surry County in 1790, and his will was probated in that county in 1798.

James McKinney shows an earlier arrival date to Surry County than James L. McLemore does. Mr. McKinney states that Ephraim was on the 1775 Surry County, NC Tax List. He also noted that in 1778 he entered 570 acres of land on the county line on a small branch of Hunters Creek, being the land "he now lives on."

James L. McLemore indicates that "In his will, he names his wife Hannah (who was left the use of all of his property while she remained a widow), sons Sterling, Wright, William, John, and Gilliam, and daughters Martha JONES, Kersey CONNA, Hannah McLemore, Rebecca McLemore, Fanny McLemore, and Sally McLemore. One of his executors was a Nicholas MASTERS; recalling that Ephraim Jr witnessed the will of Joseph MASTERS in 1781, it is possible that we have here a connection between the Masters family and Ephraim Jr."

Dr. Leverett also notes that Ephraim was listed in Captain Jeffrey's Company in 1754 of the Granville Co Militia (Colonial Granville Co and its People, Worth Ray). Vol. 22, p. 370-380 N.C. State Records: Ephraim McLemore Private in Captain Osborne Jeffrey's Company, Co. C. William Eaten's Regt, Granville Co., N.C, Oct 8, 1754. James McKinney instead shows that he served as a Private in the Reg. of Col. William Eaton of Granville Couny.

The 1790 Surry Co NC census shows 1 white male 16+, 3 white males 16-; and 5 females. The 1810 N.C. census shows an E. McLemore in Bladen Co. (Source: Dr. Rudy Leverett note card on Ephraim McLemore).

Ephraim married Hannah Hudspeth about 1760 in Surry County, North Carolina. Hannah (daughter of Ralph Hudspeth, Jr. and Catherine ???) was born between 1740 and 1745 in Virginia; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

A biblical name. He was probably named for a McLemore Uncle. (James L. McLemore, III, p 40).

He was devised, under his father's Will, 80 acres on Peahill Creek which also fell in Northhampton County north of Roanoke. He seems to have remained there for some time. Two references can be found relating to him in July 1746. However, within about eight years, he is found serving in the Granville County Militia across the Roanoke. His son, Ephraim Jr, was only about 16, and hence probably too young to serve. He also witnessed the sale of land in Granville County in 1762, and bought two tracts himself, one of 250 acres and one of 110 acres (James L. McLemore, III, pp. 46, 47).

During the same period of time that Ephraim Jr was living in Surry County (1784-1787), an Ephraim McLemore lived in Northampton County with 10 members of his family. This likely was the elder Ephraim, still alive and living in his old homeplace, having reached the advanced age of between 70 and 75. If so, this is the last reference that can be ascribed to him. He left no will. There is also the less likely possibility that this was Ephraim Jr, living in Northampton, but operating his holding as far west a Surry County. (James L. McLemore, III, p 48).

Only two children are known with reasonable certainty: the older Wright McLemore, and the younger, Ephraim Maclemore Jr. (1738-1798). (James L. McLemore, III, p 47).

Thought by many to have married a woman whose last name was WRIGHT based on the name of his son. His brother, William, also named a son WRIGHT. They both may have married into the WRIGHT family, or it might be that the WRIGHT surname belonged to a common ancestor, and was not the last name of either of their spouses.

Ralph Hudspeth Jr was born abt 1695 Henrico Co VA.It is thought that Ralph married first Mary Carter, daughter of Giles and Mary (Provall) Carter abt 1728.By 1737 Ralph had married a second time to a Catherine. I don't know whose son Osbourne is. All of the above (except the two Ralphs) declared just l poll. It appears that "taxables" were white males over 16 and all negroes and mulattoes, male and female, free and slave. The various spellings reflect the way the names were written by the original tally-takers and the changes made after their lists were submitted to the court.] Other family names on this list are William MOORE, Ephriam McLEMORE, Philemon BRADFORD, Giles CARTER, & Joseph LUNSFORD. The will of Ralph Hudspeth Jr June 11th 1776

In the Name of God, Amen This eleventh day of June in the year of our Lord Christ, One thousand, Seven Hundred and Seventy Six, I Ralph Hudspeth, of the County of Surry and province of North Carolina, being of perfect mind and memory, thanks be unto God, calling unto mind the mortality of my Body and, too, knowing that is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament, that is to say. First, I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it. And my Body to be buried in a Christian like manner at the descretion of my Executors, hereinafter names, not doubting but at the Resurection I shall receive the same by the mighty Power of God. And as to my Worldly Estate, I dispose of them in the following manner.

In primary I give and bequeath to my son Ralph, A Negro woman named Agg, the same I lent to him some time ago to him and his heirs forever.

Item I give and bequeath to my son Carter a Negro man names Bob, the same that has had in possession some time to him and his heirs forever.


Item I give and bequeath to my son Jiles a negro man named Dick that he has now in possession to him and his heirs forever.

Item I give and bequeath to my daughter, Margrate Moore Ten Shillings proclamation money.

Item I give and bequeath to my son David all that tract of land whereon I now live to take possession thereof after the marriage or decease of his mother to him and his heirs forever.

Nevertheless if my son David should die before he arrives at the age of twenty one years or without a lawful heir of his body then and in that case it is my desire that the said land should be sold and the money arriving there from to be equally divided between the surviving children that I have my wife Catharine.

Item I also give and bequeath to my son David thirty pounds proclamation money.

Item I lend to my beloved wife Catharine the Land and Plantation whereon I now live; also the following Negroes (to wit) Flood, Nedd, Nan, Jenny, and Young Nan together with all my stock and household furniture during her natural life of widowhood and after her decease or marriage, I give and bequeath the aforesaid Negroes (to wit, Flood, Nedd, Nanm, Jenny, and Young Nan, together with their increase. Neither Catharine nor David are listed in the 1784/87 NC State census or the 1790 Federal Census for NC.

Both James and (brother?) Abraham Macklemore settled on the banks of the Roanoke River, just across the Virginia-North Carolina line following its establishment by the Byrd Commission in 1728. Just what had the Macklemores been doing, just where they had been located, during the period from Mun. Macklemore's importation in 1681 to the 1732 repatent of the James Macklemore patent following his removal to North Carolina, has long been a matter of inquiry and dispute. Without further record, we may never know for sure. (James L. McLemore, III, p 36). It is assumed that James and Abraham were immigrants, but it is possible they were born on U.S. soil to an unknown progenitor, possibly even Mun. Maklemore.

Mun. Macklemore is the earliest recorded family member in the Americas. His relationship to James and Abraham is unknown. Although it has been speculated he might be the father of James Macklemore he is more likely an uncle or cousin, based on their projected ages.

James began having his children while still in Virginia. It is probable that all six (known) children were born prior to James' 1714 patent adjoining Richard Washington. (James L. McLemore, III, p 40).

Son Charles Macklemore - rest of the land from the riverbank to the head. Son Ephraim Macklemore - 70 or 80 acres on Peehill Creek on the upper side of the first branch of the creek. Sons William and James - cattle each. Daughter Margery Macklemore and son Charles Macklemore - cow and calf each. Sons William, James, Charles, and Ephraim - sows and pigs each. Most of James' children moved along the edge of the frontier in north central North Carolina in the early to mid 18th century, and their families are not as easily traced. Some speculation is therefore involved in the following outline of their activities. A careful review of the last will and testament of James Macklemore can aid the reader in understanding the early subsequent history of his sons. As we shall see shortly, the oldest two boys, William and John, had grown to manhood while the family lived in Virginia, and remained there to start families.

William, either due to being the oldest son or stronger ties to his father, was left land by his father. John, already firmly established with land of his own--and being a younger son---was left money instead. James left most of his land to be divided among his three younger sons, and by devising oldest son William with them as well, he preordained that the descendants of the younger three, plus descendants of William, would be Carolinians (at least initially), and that John's posterity would comprise the Virginia branch of the family. James married Fortune Gilliam about 1690. Fortune (daughter of John Gilliam and Margaret Henshaw) was born between 1668 and 1671 in Surry County, Virginia; died after 1736 in Bertie County, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Fortune or Fortain. Assumed to be the daughter of John and Margery GILLIAM, she would have had to have been one of their youngest children (if not the youngest), as she was probably born with a few years of the time of her father's death in 1671.(James L. McLemore, III, p 39).

Robert McLemore Butler shows her date of death as 12 May 1754 in Surry County, Virginia, much later than the date shown by James McLemore and Mark Freeman.

Ralph Hudspeth's will, Henrico County, Virginia 1719

I Ralph Hudspeth being sick and weak in body but sound and perfect memory thanks be to God make this my last will and testament hereby making all former wills void.

Item I give and bequeath my soul unto the hand of God the maker hoping to find remission and pardon to all my sins through the mercies and of my Savour Jesus Christ and my body to be decently buried according to thedecision of my Executrix.

Item I give and bequeath unto my loving son George Hudspeth all my land purchases of James Powell cook to him and his heirs forever.

Item I give and bequeath unto my above son. Item I give also to my said son one feather bed and furniture there to belonging.

Item I give and bequeath unto my four daughters Hannah, Elizabeth, Mary,and Margaret each of them a heifer and my broadcloth coat.

Item I give unto my son George Hudspeth all the broadcloth remaining from my coat.

Item I give and bequeath unto my wife Margaret (Eyers) Hudspeth all the remainder of my movable estate both within and without. Item I make my above wife hole and Sole Executrix to this my last will and Testament in witness whereof I have set my hand and seal this 19th day of February. At a court held for Henrico County the 6th day of April 1719 the will was proved by the oaths of William Fuqua and Joseph Fuqua two of the witnesses thereto and was thereupon admitted. Test. William Randolph

October 1688 Ralph's marriage to Margaret Eyers was solemnized at St. John's Church in Henrico County, Virginia. These records have preserved with the parish records of St. John's Church and also in Henrico County Miscellaneous Records, 1650 Vol. II.

Orphan's Court pg 303 "Ralph Hudspeth, Henrico County Va. who married Margaret Eyres ye daughter of Joseph Eyres, dec'd did this day appear in open court and did acknowledge ye reciept of his wifes full part of her legacy, left by her grandfather William Humpries deceased, and from every part and parcel therein dothe hereby acquit, release Margaret Eyres Floyd of ye sed last will and testament of said Humpries"
