Thomas S. Easley, age 92, of Hemphill passed away Thursday, January 29, 2004 in Hemphill.

Easley was born May 15, 1911 in Sabine County as the son of the late Hattie Virginia (BECKOM) and Artie O. EASLEY. He was a lifelong resident of Sabine County and was a carpenter.

Survivors include: wife, Callie Mae EASLEY of Hemphill; sons Arvin EASLEY, Don EASLEY, and Jimmy EASLEY, all of Hemphill; daughters, Johnnie Faye GODSEY of San Augustine, Jimmie HIPPLER and Martha GRIFFIN, both of Hemphill, and Dianne SHORT of Pineland; 20 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; and nine great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 31, 2004 at Strickland Chapel Church of God on FM 2024 with Bro. Vance PURTELL and Bro. Joe EBARB officiating. Interment followed at LOTT Cemetery. Starr Funeral Home Inc., Hemphill, directors.

A digital image of his actual Texas death certificate, viewable online at FamilySearch.org, Texas Deaths, 1890-1976, shows that he was a laborer. He was shown as married, and the son of Dan Easley and Josephine Farce (sic).

Kay Parker McCary, in her annotated trasnscription of the Spring Hill Cemetery
shows that his grave was a triple with Hattie E. Easley and Hattie V. Easley, and was inscribed "At rest," and a footstone reading "Daddy."

Roberts, Governor of the State aforesaid by virtue of the power vested in me by law ans in accordance witht he laws of said State in such case made and provided do by these presents grant to C.W. Easley his heirs or assigns forever One Hundred and Sixty acres of land, situated and described as follows. In Sabine County about 6 miles S.55 W from Hemphill, by virtue of his affidavit made before the Clerk of the District Court for Sabine County July 1, 1871, Under an act supplementary to an Act to regulate the disposal of the Public Lands of the State of Texas approved March 24th, 1871, Beginning on Isaac F. Pace South b'dy at a Stake.....Hereby relinquishing to him the said C.W. Easley and his heirs or assigns forever all the rights and title in and to said land, hereafter held and possessed by the said State, and I do hereby issue this letter Patent for the same. Clementine married Elizabeth Jane White about 1852 in Spring Hill Community, Sabine County, Texas. Elizabeth (daughter of Edward White and Elizabeth Strickland) was born on 1 May 1825 in Amite County, Mississippi; died on 19 May 1899 in Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Elizabeth Beres shows him as a son of Charles Forse, born 29 Nov 1788 in Newark, New Jersey and died before 1850 in Crockett, Texas, and Elizabeth Conner, born ca 1792 in Rocheport, Boone County, Missouri and died before 1842.

Dickie J. Sims emailed that "John Smith Forse owned a sawmill which could be hauled in two or three wagons. It took at least three men to run the sawmill. They didn't have a way to haul big logs to the mill except by oxen, so it was normal practice to haul the mill where the timber was. "
