  1. 1.  Gayle Louise Griffith was born on 25 Jan 1945 in Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio (daughter of William Edward "Red" Griffith and Florence Crum); died on 17 Feb 1988 in Salem, Columbiana County, Ohio.

    Notes:

She married David METCALF. She was an x-ray technician, and he was a baker in Youngstown, Ohio. They were the parents of Eric METCALF.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  William Edward "Red" Griffith was born on 11 May 1912 in Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio (son of William Phillip Griffith and Mabel Laverne Strong); died on 25 Jan 1983 in Boynton Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida.

    Notes:

William Billig emailed Tom Strong in April 2005 a story told by his Aunt Florence concerning her wedding. Apparently, Uncle Red's sister, Mary Louise was a true prankster. She quilted Red's pajamas so they couldn't be worn and made sure that rice was in and over everything where they spent their wedding night.

Grandma Mable Laverne tended to rule the roost, so Grandpa's name was Griffith while my Uncle Red (William) was the boss and had his listed as Griffiths. The boys still prefer Griffiths and I believe tend to use it. I really should change it to Griffith since that is how it is spelled legally.

He tried to learn as quickly as he could, followed directions, and took his job and training very seriously. He was assigned to be a truck driver at his station. So he practiced and practiced all of the drills associated with his new position, the pole, the suiting up, speed and accuracy, the whole nine yards. Finally came the opportunity to respond to his first fire as the new engine driver. The alarm went off, and he sprang into action doing everything flawlessly. As he arrived at the fire in record time, he learned that he had only made one mistake. He had left all of the other firefighters back at the station. Shortly after he arrived came the rest of the crew hanging out of the chief's car. Grandpa reportedly received the chewing out that he deserved." Appointed as a cadet firefighter. Born in America. Hose Co.9 @ No.1 1910's.

Another amusing story about William Griffith was supplied by William Billing of Michigan. It was found an old newspaper, likely taken from the Youngstown Vindicator. The date is unknown. The article is titled, "Premature". " William Griffith, city fireman of Hall Heights Ave., says he refuses to take a hint. In fact, he wants to keep on living for a while yet, even if a local mortician does have his number. One evening last week a florist's truck stopped in front of his place, the driver stepped to the porch and hung a crape on the door! "Goodness sakes!" exclaimed a neighbor. "What on earth has happened to Bill? I didn't know he was even sick." "An accident?" someone remarked. So the neighbors stepped over to extend their sympathy to the bereaved family. "What has happened?" they asked at the door. "Nothing," was the response. "Why the funeral decorations, then?" It wasn't pleasant to find the crape hangers had been busy, but it was all due to a mistake in address.

William married Mabel Laverne Strong on 2 Aug 1910 in Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio. Mabel (daughter of Frederick Adelbert Strong and Alberta M. Osborne) was born on 30 Jan 1889 in Bristol Township, Trumbull County, Ohio; died on 27 Sep 1976 in Alliance, Stark County, Ohio; was buried in Lake Park Cemetery, Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio. 1. 10.  Frederick Adelbert Strong was born on 22 Oct 1863 in Bristol Township, Trumbull County, Ohio (son of David Brainerd Strong and Leanora Arline Sherman); died on 19 Feb 1943 in New Lyme, Ashtabula County, Ohio; was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Bristol Township, Trumbull County, Ohio.

"Strong Fred, son of David and Leanora A Sherman Strong, m. Bertha Osborne Oct. 22, 1885. She d. Feb 8, 1906, at her home in Youngstown. She was the dau. of Harmon B. Fitchet Bowyer."

HISTORICAL COLLECTION OF BRISTOL TOWNSHIP, Bristolville Ohio, Thomas J. Kochur, 1989. (p. 210).

Alberta's death in 1906 was probably as a result of childbirth, daughter Mary Alberta being born just 9 days prior to her mothers death. It was obviously devasting to the family. Fred or his youngest daughters have not yet been located 1910 or 1920 census index. The older children appear to have scattered. Robert S. Strong, the SFAA Historian, indicates that Fred left the family after the children were born.

At the time of the 1910 census, 22 year-old Anna and 9 year-old Grace were living with their grandparents, Harmon and Ann Osborne, in Bristol. Daughters Mabel, age 21, and Belle, age 19, were living with their Aunt Alice Strong CUTTING in the fourth ward of Youngstown. Harmon, age 16, was listed as a "hired man" in the home of Cass MILLS in Farmington Township, Trumbull County. Harry, age 14, was listed as a "boy to raise" in the home of Wallace BOLES in Southington Township, Trumbull County.

Fred and Alberta are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, Bristol.

Mrs. Frederick Strong, a respected resident of the West End, died at her home, No. 19 Furnace Street, Thursday night from convulsions. The case is particularly sad on account of the fact that, in addition to a new born babe, seven children are left without a mother's care at just the time when it is most needed.

Mrs. Strong was Mis Birdie Osborne, a daughter of Harmon Osborne, a pioneer farmer of Farmington. She was about 40 years of age. After her marriage to Frederick Strong, she moved to Youngstown and among her friends and acquaintances was regarded as a most worthy woman. She is survived by her husband, father and mother and the following children: Anna, Mabel, Belle, Herman, Grace, Gladys, and the baby, scarcely a week old.

Funeral services will be held at the home Saturday morning at 9:30 o'clock after which the body will be taken on th 10:45 Pennsylvania train to Bristolville for interment
