Cromwell Anson Jones

Benjamin Dwight writes that "He obtained his education by his own efforts. He was grad. at Jefferson Med. Coll., in Philadelphia, March, 1827, and in 1833 went to Texas and became a surgeon in the Texas Army, and was in the battle of San Jacinto (Apr. 21, 1836). After Texas became a republic he was sent as minister to the U.S. govt. He was also representative and senator in the Congress of Texas, secretary of state, and President of the Republic (Dec. 1844 - Feb. 1846). During his administration the public finances were managed with great skill and economy; old debts were all paid off and a surplus laid by (beside meeting current expenses), sufficient to provide for all needful expenditures for some years to come. The frontiers were efficiently protected against Mexicans and Indians. Law was enforced and justice, civil and criminal, was maintained. No expedition for glory or plunder occurred; immigration was large and active; the public lands were husbanded; common school education was promoted; and a state constitution was formed by a convention called for the purpose by President Jones, and made the fundamental law of the state by subsequent annexation of Texas to the United States. He was a zealous mason and was one of the five masons to organize the first masonic lodge in Texas. He was the first grand master of the Lodge, for which a dispensation was procured from the Grand Lodge of Louisiana. From 1846 to 1858, he resided on his farm which he called Barrington, engaged in agriculture and education of his children."

A saddler at East Windsor, and after 1792 at Gr. Barrington, Mass. (1792-1809). He was the son of Isaac JONES of Boston, a saddler, and Hannah BREWER. Hannah BREWER was the dau. of Judge Josiah BREWER of Worcester, Mass. (Dwight, p 158).

Solomon married Sarah Strong about 1779 in Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut. Sarah (daughter of Timothy Strong and Sarah Stricklin) was born on 6 Apr 1758 in East Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut; died on 8 Mar 1816 in Lenox, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. He married 2nd Abiah GAWDY, and they were the parents of Martin, Timothy (died young), Abiah, Timothy, Levi and Willard. He married third Editha RICHSTONE and they were the parents of Betsey.
