Born in Wisconsin and grew up in Iowa. He homesteaded in Chickasaw County.

Worthy married Harriet Wesley Scott in Jul 1876 in Lawler, Chickasaw County, Iowa. Harriet (daughter of Samuel Scott and Ann Thompson) was born on 25 Nov 1859 in New York; died on 7 Aug 1951 in Oroville, Butte County, California; was buried on 11 Aug 1951 in Cherokee Cemetery, Oroville, Butte County, California. Worthy and Harriett were living in Cass County, Minnesota as of the 1900 and 1910 census. At the time of the 1900 census, he was listed as William, perhaps in error. His occupation was shown as railroad laborer. His date of birth, perhaps also in error, was shown as October 1847. The 1900 census showed that Worthy and Harriett had been married 16 years (ca 1884). Harriet was listed as the mother of 11 children, 7 of whom were still living. The six children listed at home at the time of the 1900 census were William, Claricy, Lydia, Viola, Harry and Frederick. Charles ASHLAND and Charley LEAKE were living in their home as boarders. William was shown as a railroad laborer.

The 1910 census shows that both were married once, and had been married 37 years (which would push the marriage date back to ca 1873). The census further shows that Harriett was the mother of 12 children, 7 of whom were still living. Of the six children listed at home in 1900, only Harry was still at home. Perhaps Frederick, who should still have been living at home at age 10, had died. An additional son, 7 year old Henry, was listed as well.

According to Jake Schopf, they lived in Everett, Washington for a few years and then moved to Butte County, California.

Kristine Hammond also lists them as the parents of Noel, Ellen, Emma and Sybil. As none of these children are on either the 1900 or 1910 census, perhaps they were among the five children who died.

5. Harry O. Gates was born in May 1897 in Minnesota.
6. Frederick Gates was born in Mar 1900 in Minnesota; died before 1910.
7. Henry Gates was born about 1903 in Minnesota.

At the time of the 1850 Federal census, the family was living in Calamus, Dodge County, Wisconsin, and was listed as follows:

It appears that after the death of her husband, Sybil may have remarried. At the time of the 1860 Federal census, 40 year old Sybil is listed in the household of 55 year old John BODGLEY, along with 9 year old Worthy GATES and 13 year old Lydia GATES. Worthy is listed, in error, as female. 23 year old George BODGLEY was living in the home as well. They were living in Jacksonville, Chickasaw County, Iowa.

II. Ira Gates, b. at Ridgebury, in Ridgefield, Conn., 4 June 1777; a farmer; married, 30 Sept. 1798, in Hinesburgh, Vt., Clarissa Heath, who was born 24 Aug. 1780. They lived in Malone, N. Y., from 1804 to 1815, and in Perry, N. Y., about nine years. They then moved to Ellington, N. Y., where they died (she, 20 Jan. 1854; he, 18 Jan. 1860), and were buried. He cleared a large farm in Ellington; helped to build the first meeting-house; was a constituent member of the first Christian Church; was soon chosen one of its deacons, and held the office till his death.

ELLINGTON (Chautauqua County, New York)

Christian Church of Ellington (1823) The Christian Church of Ellington (then Gerry) was organized July 13,1823 and was composed of seven members: Ira GATES Noel C. GATES Simon LAWRENCE Clarissa GATES Polly GATES [It is believed that the first and third of the following named officers make up the seven original members.] Freeman WALDEN and Elisha BEARDSLEY were chosen elders; Seth S. CHASE, deacon

No articles of faith were adopted; the members simply agreeing ? to take the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments for the rule of faith and practice at all times.? From the time of organization for about tens years the records are meager, containing little else than the record of members received and dismissions. Among the ministers who served the church were:

The meeting house was built about 1845. It was repaired in 1859, and dedicated anew, Jan 5, 1860; sermon by E. B. ROLLINS.

Ira married Clarissa Heath on 30 Sep 1798 in Hinesburgh, Chittenden County, Vermont. Clarissa was born on 24 Aug 1780; died on 20 Jan 1854. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

David married Jerusha Whitney on 22 Dec 1774 in Ridgebury, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Jerusha (daughter of Richard Whitney and Esther Clark) was born in Jun 1755 in Ridgebury, Fairfield County, Connecticut; died in Jul 1840. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Jerusha Whitney, b. in Ridgefield, Conn., 25 or 28 June 1755; married, 22 Dec. 1774, at Ridgebury, in Ridgefield, by Rev. Samuel Camp, pastor of the Congregational Church in Ridgebury, to David Gates, of the same place, a farmer, born in June 1753, possibly the youngest child of Samuel and Rachel (Hayes) Gates. They moved, about 1789, to Hinesburgh, Vt, where he died of consumption, 19 June 1793, and was buried in the Hinesburgh Cemetery. In 1797 she removed, with some of her children, to Paris, N.Y., but returned to Hinesburgh in the winter of I 797-8, and in 1802 married Lawrence Delong, a farmer, of a town adjoining Hinesburgh. She died at St. Albans, Vt., 29 or 31 July 1840, in her 86th year, and was buried at St. Albans Bay, Vt. In her last years she dwelt with her daughter, Mrs. Betsey (Gates) Brooks, at St. Albans, Vt.
