Frank John Havel, Jr.

Frank was born on the farm west of Milligan now occupied by Emil TUREK. He graduated from Milligan Public School in 1928 and entered farming with this father. In 1937, he went to work for the Farmers' Coop. Other employment includes working as a mechanic at BORS & BULIN Garage in Milligan and then at Bruning Air Base. He entered the service on May 29, 1943. He served in the European Theater in France and Germany with the 30th Medical Depot. He was in the battles of Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. After his discharge, he and his brother-in-law, Donal VAVRA worked part time as trappers. In 1947, they received over $1,000 for mink pelts. He worked full-time for Fillmore County as a road maintenance operator and volunteer firefighter (Milligan, p 293).

Dennis Belohlavy pointed out that his date of birth on the SSDI was instead 14 Dec 1914. It is not known whether this date, or the date of 24 Dec 1910 cited in Milligan Nebraska book, is accurate.

Frank married Marie Helen Oliva on 21 Dec 1939 in Geneva, Fillmore County, Nebraska. Marie was born on 18 Jun 1918 in Tobias, Saline County, Nebraska; died on 14 Mar 2012 in Friend, Saline County, Nebraska; was buried in Bohemian National Cemetery (Milligan South), Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska. A 1901 graduate of Milligan High School, Frank helped his father with his carpentry work, and took up farming in 1903. (Milligan, p 292). He also worked as a Millman.

Lula and Frank farmed on the BIBA farm four miles west of Milligan after their marriage. They later moved to Grandma HAVEL's farm, where their two daughters were born. In early 1927, they farmed on Grandpa CUDLY's land. In 1952, Frank began employment with the KASSIK Milling Company, where he remained employed until 1968. (Milligan, p 293).

John W. HAVEL was the son of Catherine PETRICKA and Jacob HAVEL. He immigrated to Minnesota in 1867. An August 28, 1903 issue of the Milligan Times it was written that "He was a member of the Posse that chased the Jesse James gang out of Minnesota after they had looted a bank." His obituary noted that "He was a carpenter by trade and many buildings hereabouts will long attest to his labors; but at the time of his death he was farming on his place in Liberty Township." The daughter of Fannie BARIKOVA and Joseph KREJDLE. She immigrated to the United States in 1875 with her parents and sister Marie, who married Peter BARTU.

The 1910 Fillmore County, Nebraska census indicates she was the mother of 15 children, 10 of them still living.

Immediately after their marriage, John and Marie moved to Hayes County to homestead. After proving their land, they moved to Saline county, where they farmed for eight years, and then to Fillmore County, where they farmed for an additional 26 years until their retirement. (Milligan, p 255).

Johan and his wife left Europe and settled in Turkey Creek Township, Saline County, Nebraska, sometime between 1875 and 1878. They purchased land from the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad Company in the N 1/2 NE 1/4 of Section 31. He received the deed to this land on March 1, 1884. The land was transferred to his son, Peter Cudly on August 3, 1901; to Peter's brother John on January 10, 1917; and to John's son, Joseph John Cudly on April 2, 1924. Robert Vnoucek, the great-great-grandson of Johan Cudly owns 40 acres of the original railroad land. (Milligan, p 255).

Pavel and Marie Riha Buzek left Moravia in 1868--settling first in Red Oak, Iowa--and later moving to Saline County, Nebraska. Pavel filed a claim to the 80 acres of land on which they were living on October 17, 1870. He claimed the N 1/2 NE 1/4 of Section 18 in Turkey Creek Township. Here he built a home that was 12 by 16 feet wide with two doors and four windows. He also built a 12 by 40 foot stable and an eight by ten foot granary, along with a corn crib. A well of 50 feet was dug, and an acre of forest trees and several fruit trees were planted as well. His claim became final by December 10, 1877, two years after he had become a citizen. In 1882, he sold his homestead for $1100 to Frederick Weber and purchased 80 acres from the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad company, purchasing another 160 acres from them in 1886.

After Pavel's wife died, he heard of land being available in Wisconsin, on the stipulation that the land be cleared of tree stumps. He made himself a sledge hammer and moved there to stake his claim. He returned home after eight years, discouraged. He was an old man and was unable to hold claim to the land he cleared. (Milligan, p 229).

At the time of the 1900 Federal census, Paul can be found in Flambeau, Chippewa County, Wisconsin. He was a boarder in the home of Frank Caloud of Bohemia. Paul was listed as born in Bohemia in January 1824, age 76, widowed. He was shown as a naturalized citizen, immigrating in 1870.
