A 1961 graduate of Milligan High School, Darrel received an Associate Degree in Auto Mechanics from Southeast Community College. He worked for B&B Chevrolet Auto Supply in Friend for 24 years. He also farmed part-time in Glengary and Liberty Township after the death of his father. An excellent mechanic, he also loved the outdoors and the peace and quiet of tilling the fields. Notes:

A 1928 graduate of Milligan Public School, he began farming near Milligan. After his marriage, he and Helen moved to a farm west of Milligan, on Section 11, Glengary Township. This farm was purchased by Lew's grandparents, Vaclav and Anna (Sopr) KOCA from the Chicago Burlington and Omaha Railroad. Lew was interested and active in civic and community activities. He was a charter member of the Milligan Volunteer Fire Department, on the Glengary Township Board, a member of the Milligan Board of Education and on the Fillmore County Redistricting Committee. Alois married Helen I. Radil on 20 Sep 1938 in Wilber, Saline County, Nebraska. Helen (daughter of Albert L. Radil and Agnes Yeck) was born on 15 Jul 1915 in Western, Saline County, Nebraska; died on 28 Mar 1998 in Friend, Saline County, Nebraska; was buried in Bohemian Brethren Cemetery (AKA Cesky Bratri Cemetery), Fillmore County, Nebraska. Helen graduated from Milligan High School in 1933, and studied Normal Training, including taking education courses through the University of Nebraska. She taught in several rural schools in Saline County. During winter the pupils surrounded the pot belly stove with their lunch pails in hopes of having their food at least room temperature. Teachers were the janitors and even carried in the coal and cobs from outdoors. After many years of helping her husband with the family farm, her interest in youth led her to seek employment at the Youth Development Center in Geneva, Nebraska in 1971. She retired in 1985. Anton worked at the Taylor and Burke grain elevator in Milligan. He was later employed by Victor Laun and Company, general merchandiser, and eventually went into business with his brother-in-law, founding the firm of Hamouz and Stech. Anton was an early user of new technology. He installed a telephone between his store and home in June, 1900. In 1910, he dug a basement under his home in order to intall a light plant for electricity. He was the fifth person in Milligan to own a car, buying one in 1913. He was active in Civic events, serving as county supervisor for Glengary Township for several terms. He was also a member of the Sokol Society, the Knights of Columbus, and the Catholic Workmen. Anton married Antonie Koca on 17 Jan 1905 in Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska. Antonie (daughter of Vaclav Koca and Anna Sopr) was born on 27 Sep 1879 in Glengary Township, Fillmore County, Nebraska; died on 10 Jul 1967 in Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska; was buried in Bohemian Brethren Cemetery (AKA Cesky Bratri Cemetery), Fillmore County, Nebraska. They were married in the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Witnesses were John and Cecelia KUCERA. The bridal party took a three week train trip to Corpus Christi, Texas (Milligan, p 283).

Married:
Barbora and Frank left Bohemia with their five children in June, 1878. They settled in Nebraska where they were pioneer farmers in both Saline and Fillmore counties. To them were born 17 children, eight of whom survived to reach maturity. Barbora told her children and grandchildren stories about pioneer life. One of the favorite stories was about a family they knew well that lived in a home that was half dugout and half soddie. The mother made a large pot of soup for dinner. The family were seated around the table to be served, but before it could be ladled out, a snake fell threw the soddy roof and into the soup. (Milligan, pp 284 - 285).

The son of Victor KOCA. They sailed from Bremen, Germany aboard the steamship "Ohio" with 454 aliens and 77 citizens aboard. Anna's sister, Katherine SOPR was traveling with them. They headed to Braidwood, Illinois, working in the mines for 17 months before heading farther west to Fillmore. When first in Fillmore, they made their home with Frank KOTAS and Mary BERNASEK. Vaclav purchased the SW 1/4 of Section 11 from the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad Company.
