Notes:

Listed on the 1850 Missouri census as a carpenter in LaGrange. In 1860, Winfield and family were farming near LaGrange, probably living on his parents farm as Samuel had retired to LaGrange by then. Somewhere around 1868 Winfield moved farther west in Lewis County to Salem Township with a LaBelle address. He was buried in the Asbury Chapel Cemetery (Ralph Marshall, p 28).

During a November 2002 research trip to Missouri and Kentucky, Charles Strong found in the Breckinridge County archives a booklet titled "Descendants of Thomas Marshall Bedford Co., Va. Plus Hix-Owen-Nicholson & Related Families" compiled by Ralph E. Marshall. Completed September, 1986" Charles copied numerous relevant pages from this booklet, the copies now in the files of Melinda McLemore Strong in San Antonio. This book states that Samuel Marshall was the next to youngest son of Thomas Marshall. It was speculated by the author that "Perhaps Samuel had demonstrated good business sense or was a favorite of his parents as Thomas appointed him the Executor of his Will in October 1819. William and Alexander were several years older than Samuel and lived in the same part the county but were not chosen for that responsibility. Samuel and Alexander must have been fairly close as brothers as they married the Hix sisters and then took their families to Breckinridge county, Kentucky.

Census and birth records indicated that the Samuel and Alexander Marshall families made the move to Kentucky after the 1820 census was taken but probably not later than the spring of 1821. Alexander is recorded as a grocer and shoemaker in his earliest years in Hardinsburg but there is less information on Samuel. The first record of a land transaction for Samuel shows him purschasing 141 1/4 acres of land for $330 from Littleton and Lucretia Martin of February 23, 1825. This farm was about 1 1/2 miles south of Hardinsburg and bordered on land purchased by Alexander in 1829. The 1830 census (below) lists Samuel and Alexander as neighbors and Samuel is shown with one slave. Charles made a xerox of the actual deed, which was in Book G, pages 143 and 144.

They are recorded there in the 1830 census [KY Microfilm No. 16, page 65]. The only other Marshall head of household is his brother, Alexander Marshall.

Samuel Marshall's listing on the 1830 census shows his household consists of one (1) free white male from between the ages of 5-10, and one (1) free white male between the ages of 30 and 40. There are also two (2) free white females under the age of 5, two (2) free white females between the ages of 5-10, and one (1) free white female between the age of 30 and 40.

Fourteen years later, in 1835, they migrated again, this time joining the great four year rush caused by the opening to pioneer settlement of the last Missouri Indian Lands. This great human movement, which ended in 1837, was not unlike the Californian gold rush of later years. This time the Marshalls settled in rural Lewis Co. from where they then moved to LaGrange at a later date, possibly in the 1870s.

A visit to the courthouse at Monticello in Lewis county revealed that Samuel was involved in many land transactions from 1835 to 1870. History books lists him as a settler in 1835 in Union Township 60, Range 6, so he probably farmed just west and perhaps a little south of LaGrange. (Ralph Marshall, p 27).

Census lists him as a retired farmer living in LaGrange with real estate valued at $5,000 in 1860 and $4,000 in 1870. Town of LaGrange currently has about 1,200 population and is located on the Mississippi River in southeast part of Lewis county. No examination has been made of all the recorded land transactions but Samuel and Hannah did sign a deed on March 23, 1867. Then the next record in July 1869 was for sale of land by another person acting as trustee for Samuel, an indication that he was no longer capable of handling his own affairs. Perhaps the last entry was in December 1870 where there was a Sheriff's sale of some lots Samuel owned in LaGrange. No will or probate is on record at the Monticello courthouse so perhaps there was little property left to be disposed of when Samuel and Hannah died. At this point, no cemetery record has been found to indicate when Samuel and Hannah died or where they are buried. It would seem logical that they were either buried in LaGrange or at Asbury Chapel where their son Winfield was laid to rest in 1871. The author walked over the LaGrange cemetery in June 1985 and found not Marshall stones but there were also areas where the markers were broken or had disappeared. (Ralph Marshall, p 27).

The following obituary was found by Mary Pat Strong and Charles R. Strong on an earlier research trip, in June 2002, at the LaGrange Public Library.

DIED

MARSHALL-In this city on the morning of the 4th inst. Samuel Marshall, in the 85th year of his age.

Mr. Marshall was one of the pioneers in this section, being one of the oldest men in the county. He has long been an invalid and his death was no surprise to his friends. A funeral discourse was preached at the residence of the deceased by Eld. Jas. Penn, Tuesday morning, after which the remains were followed to the city cemetery by weeping relatives and friends.

MARSHALL-In this city after a short illness, on the 25th inst., Mrs. Hannah S. Marshall, wife of Samuel Marshall, aged 77 years 5 months and 18 days.

"And I heard a voice from Heaven saying unto me, write, 'Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth." Yea, saith the Lord, Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors."

Hannah S. Hicks was born in Campbell county, VA., December 7th, 1797. Was married to Samuel Marshall, March 26th, 1817; moved to Breckenridge county, Ky., in 1821; joined the Methodist Church in 1822; came to Lewis county, Mo., in 1835, and died April 25th, 1875, having lived with her now bereaved husband more than 58 years, and she was a member of the Methodist Church 53 years.

Such is the brief history of an eventful life of love and piety. She was loved by her neighbors. Her children grew up to call her blessed; h husband, also; and he praiseth her. Of course she dies well, leaving the blessed evidence behind that God was with her.

And purples the heavenly air,
And scatters the odors of grace."

The clan of Ulrike (German for Mistress of All) is not among the original "Seven Daughters of Eve" clans, but with just under 2% of Europeans among its members, it has a claim to being included among the numerically important clans. Ulrike lived about 18,000 years ago in the cold refuges of the Ukraine at the northern limits of human habitation. Ralph E. Marshall is the author of the book, DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS MARSHALL BEDFORD CO., VA PLUS HIX-OWEN-NICHOLSON & RELATED FAMILES (Self Published, September 1986), a copy of which can be found in the Breckinridge County Public Library, Hardinsburg, Kentucky 40143. The author describes how he and several other Marshall descendants hired a professional researcher, Thomas E. Marshall (not related) to research land deeds, marriage records and wills related to the Marshalls of Bedford County, Virginia. The researcher issued a nearly 50 page report in January, 1985, which provided the basis for additional research of the Thomas and Nancy Marshall family.

Ralph Marshall also cites a biographical sketch of Junius Marshall, published in 1887, noting that his grandfather, Thomas Marshall was "A native of Wales, settling in Maryland, where he lived several years, afterward moving to Bedford County, Va."

Ralph Marshall further cites the book EMIGRANTS FROM ENGLAND, 1773-1776, which shows two possible candidates:

Thomas Marshall, age 15, Laborer, Bristol, England to Philadelphia, March 14, 1774 (Bristol is directly across the channel from Cardiff, Wales)

William Marshall, age 50, Mariner, wife and 10 (unnamed) children, London to Maryland on the ship "Nancy," January 16, 1774 (The family could well have had a son named Thomas, and may have lived in Wales and later moved to, or simply departed from, London)

Ralph notes that Thomas Marshall lived in Maryland from about 1774 to 1790. There was a Thomas Marshall in Bedford County, who served in the Militia in 1781, but research has shown that this is another Thomas Marshall. There is no current evidence as to whether our Thomas Marshall served in the Revolution.

Ralph Marshall cites the earliest land record as being in 1803 when Thomas Marshall purchased 250 acres from Joseph Wilson. One of his neighbors was a Thomas Welch. In 1808, Thomas Marshall purchased 67 acres from Thomas Welch which was described as being on the head branches of South Fork of Little Otter River. Thomas and Nancy probably did not live on this property as they sold it three years later to Joseph and Eleanor (Marshall) Van Pelt. In 1804, Thomas and Nancy sold 125 acres to Martin Wells on waters of Little Otter River. (Ralph Marshall, p 17).

Thomas Marshall's will, dated October 1819, reads as follows:

I, Thomas Marshall, do hereby make my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say.

First, I desire that all of my live stock (with the exception of two milch cows, and hogs enough for one years' use to my wife and two more hogs for the suceeding year, all of which are to be reserved to and for her use and are to be at her own and proper disposal) should be immediately sold, and such terms as the legatees may agree upon, and the proceeds as soon as realised, I desire to be equally divided amongst all my children, their heirs, Executors, Administrators or assigns, to be held and enjoyed by them forever....Except that a deduction shall be made from the share of my son ALEXANDER of Twenty five dollars...and also a deduction shall be made from the share of my daugher, ELEANOR VAN PELT of the same sum of Twenty five dollars...and if the share to each, of the above proceeds, should be less than twenty five dollars...it is my desire that the above deduction may be made from other divisions...which are hereinafter mentioned

Secondly, I desire that all of my demands whether in bond or account, may be immediately collected, and an equal division thereof made amongst all my children without any deduction from the share of any of them.

Thirdly, I give and bequeth to my youngest daughter BETSEY, one bed complete with bedstead and furniture and one milch cow, which cow is to be expected as further exception from the above sale.

Fourthly, I give to the use of my wife NANCY during her natural life all the rest of my estate, real and personal, to her own proper use for and during that time, without waste; and after her decease I desire that it may be sold on such terms as a majority of the legatees may agree upon, and for the purpose of making a right to my real estate at the time of the above mentioned sale, I do hereby constitute and appoint my son WILLIAM, or in case of his failure, removal, or death, then I constitute and appoint my son SAMUEL to make and execute such right to the purchaser of said real estate, to him, his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, to have and to hold forever. The proceeds of such sale, which is above mentioned, I desire to be equally divided amongst my children, or in case of the death of any of them then to their heirs, per stirpes, their executors, Administrators or assigns forever.

Fifthly, I having executed a title bond to CALEB FERGUSON, for and of land therein mentioned and described, and I having received for the said land due consideration, which consideration is hereby acknowledged to have been received, I do hereby declare it as my last will that my executor may forewith confirm a title to the said Ferguson, his heirs, executors, Administrators and assigns forever. Any thing in the within will to the contrary notwithstanding.

And lastly, I do hereby constitute and appoint my son SAMUEL, Executor of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other and former wills or testaments by me heretofore made.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this nineteenth day of October in the year one thousand eight hundred and nineteen.

At a court held for Bedford County at the Courthouse the 25th day of October 1819, This Last Will and Testament of Thomas Marshal, dec'd. was exhibited in Court and proven by the oath of Benjamin Campbell and Christopher Preston, two subscribing witnesses, and ordered to be Recorded. And on the motion of Samuel Martin (Marshall), the executor therein named, who made oath and gave bond and security according to the law, Certificate is granted him for claiming a probate thereof in due form. (Will Book 5, page 120).

Two family trees posted on the RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project show a different ancestry for Thomas Marshall. They show him instead as a descendant of William MARSHALL Born: ABT 1650 in Lancashire, England Death: MAY 1686 in Cox's Choice, Calvert Co, Maryland and his wife Elizabeth COX b: ABT 1650. This is supposedly detailed in the book published by Friends of the Union Church "The Descendants of William Marshall (1650-1686) & Elizabeth Cox (1650-1717)." Thomas married Nancy Ann Oliver about 1777 in Maryland. Nancy was born about 1758 in Maryland; died on 26 May 1841 in Bedford County, Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

"Thomas was most likely born in the late 1750's and probably married in Maryland in the late 1770's. Son William appears to have been born by at least the early part of 1780. Nancy is named as wife of Thomas in his will and they are mentioned in an 1804 land transaction. However, no marriage record has been located yet for Thomas in either Maryland or Virginia to prove whether Nancy was the mother of all of his children. The fact that the first two known children of Thomas were named William and Nancy gives some credence to the idea that his father was named William and his wife was Nancy. Woodson Marshall (a grandson) state that the maiden name of Riley (his father's) mother was Oliver, and that his oldest sister, Harriet Oliver Marshall was named for her. It could be interpreted to mean that Riley's mother was actually named Harriet Oliver, in which case Thomas would have married Nancy after Riley's birth in 1797 but before 1804. Am inclined to think that Thomas only had one wife, and her name was Nancy Oliver.

Based on the bits of available information, would guess Nancy was born about 1759 and was at least 81 years old when she died in 1841. Although probably cared for most by the youngest daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and George Pollard, the 1840 census shows she COULD have been living with Nancy and Joseph Eubank. This Nancy was the daughter of William Marshall and probably the oldest grandchild of Thomas. If Nancy Marshall was living with the Eubank's then it woudl be another indication that she was the only wife of Thomas."

Jesse Hicks came to Breckinridge as early as 1810 (sic--actually came between 1817 & 1820), and made a settlement near the present site of Clifton Mills on Sinking Creek, where he opened a blacksmith shop, being one of the first mechanics in that section of the county. He died about 1836(sic). (Ralph Marshall, p 48).

Land deeds for Jesse and Jane Hix most frequently mention Stony Fork of Goose Creek and Jumping Run. The map shows Stony Creek north of Liberty but it runs into Big Otter Creek. The 554 acres Jane and Jesse sold in 1791 on Stony Fork undoubtedly had to do with her inheritance from William and Martha Ferrell. The will of William Ferrell in 1780 mentions 2,200 acres on Goose Creek, 548 acres on Bever Creek and land on Archer's Creek. (Ralph Marshall, p 17).
