In Virgie Collier Speights column about Rev. Bob Strickland, and his wife Essie Strickland O'Riley (a second cousin and widow), it is noted that his maternal grandparents were "Tom and Becky WATKINS (sic) MARTIN, and they have five sons and two daughters, Frank, Case, Lip, Jimmy, Ed, Marge and Harriet Ann, his mother." (Old Timer of Sabine County, Texas, p. 54).

Harriet married Matthew Noah Strickland in 1872. Matthew (son of Noah Strickland and Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Carter) was born on 31 Oct 1849 in East Pendleton, Sabine Parish, Louisiana; died on 4 Dec 1932 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas; was buried in Bronson Cemetery, Bronson, Sabine County, Texas. 2. Clinton Strickland was born on 22 Mar 1874; died on 29 Mar 1874.
3. Mary Elizabeth Strickland was born on 17 Feb 1878; died about 1931; was buried in Bronson Cemetery, Bronson, Sabine County, Texas.
4. Robert Lee Strickland was born on 29 May 1880 in Texas; died on 31 Dec 1966; was buried in Glendale Cemetery, Lufkin, Angelina County, Texas.
5. Lillie Ola Strickland was born on 5 Nov 1882; and died.
6. George Franklin Strickland was born on 25 Sep 1885 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 7 Nov 1973 in Falfurrias, Brooks County, Texas.
7. Emily Ida Strickland was born on 5 Mar 1888; died on 19 Mar 1915; was buried in Bronson Cemetery, Bronson, Sabine County, Texas.
8. Dr. William Marvin Strickland was born on 9 Jul 1890 in Pineland Cemetery, Pineland, Sabine County, Texas; died on 9 Feb 1957 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas; was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas.
9. Mattie Bell Strickland was born on 18 Oct 1892.
10. Fannie Mae Strickland was born on 30 Jun 1895.

Notes:

Shown by some as having the middle name Franklin, versus Jefferson.

Said to have received Bounty Land, as did his father William Martin, for service in the Texas Revolution. (White and Toole, p 88).

The annotated transcription of the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sabine County indictates that T. J. Martin, 1819-1904, had a Military Marker reading Pvt Capt. Burroughs Co. CSA

In Virgie Collier Speights June 11, 1964 column about Rev. and Mrs. Bob Strickland, it is noted that Bob's maternal grandparents were "Tom and Beckie (Watkins--sic) MARTIN, and they have five sons and two daughters, Frank, Case, Lip, Jimmy, Ed, Marge and Harriet Ann, his mother" (Old Timer of Sabine County, Texas, p. 54).

The 1900 census showed that Rebecca had five children, four of whom were still living. Based on both the column referenced above, and the various census enumerations from 1850 through 1880, it appears she had at least the seven children listed above, and possibly one other son that may have died relatively young, Clinton (b. 1855). Perhaps the census information could be interpreted as Rebecca had a total of nine children....five deceased and four still living (or vice versa).

Notes:

"William Martin and his son, Thomas Jefferson, received Bounty Land for their service in the Texas Revolution. William bought land in Sabine County from Lavina Popino (dau. of William Melton) in 1834. The Whitehead Cemetery is on this land." (White and Toole, p 88).

They may have been from Pike County, Mississippi, as this is the location of birth listed on the confederate widows pension application of their daughter, Mary Jane Martin Whitehead.

William married Harriett ??? about 1818. Harriett was born about 1805 in Mississippi; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Married:
William and Harriett Martin moved their family from Mississippi to the Republic of Texas. (White and Toole, p 88). After William Martin's death--sometime after youngest son George was born ca 1838 and before the 1850 census---Harriett was said to have married second William Slaughter. At the time of the 1850 Sabine County, Texas, census, Harriett Slaughter, age 45, can be found with children Jane, Harriett and George B.
