(Also Manes, Maines, Mains) Williamson Mains is the son of William Mains and Lucy Alford. Lucy is the daughter of Jacob Alford and Frankie Seaborn. Lucy would be the sister of Julius Alford of this census and the half sister to Needham J. Alford of this census. [His parents] Willam and Lucy were the parents of 9 children and both died prior to the 1850 census in Sabine parish. (Casagranda, 1850 Census, 99).

Williamson married Elizabeth Carter before 1843. Elizabeth (daughter of Redmond Carter and Patience Pace) was born on 15 Nov 1822 in Pike County, Mississippi; died on 19 Sep 1896 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

They had at least six children. Redmon and Claiborne are not found in the Parish records after 1860. Other children include.....Mercy Manes and Lean Manes born ca 1853 and 1859 respectively are only listed in the 1860 census (Casagranda, 1850 Census, p 99).

1. Redmond Maines was born about 1844 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana; and died.
2. William Claiborne Maines was born about 1847 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana; died on 14 Dec 1927 in Bayou Scie, Sabine Parish, Louisiana.
3. Lucy Maines was born on 5 Aug 1850 in Louisiana; died on 14 Mar 1933 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana; was buried in Bayou Scie Cemetery, Zwolle, Sabine Parish, Louisiana.
4. Mercy Maines was born about 1853 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana; and died.
5. Richard I. Maines was born on 11 Mar 1856 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana; died on 13 Apr 1930 in Many, Sabine Parish, Louisiana.
6. Leah Maines was born about 1859 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana; died before 1870 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana.

Allen Weeks Methvin provided this transcription of his obituary:

"19 SEP 1849 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana, probably the first settler in the vicinity of Many was William Mains, who settled the plantation now owned by the heirs of Louis and Frances Buvens. Mr. Mains was born in North Carolina and in early life was left an orphan. He was kidnapped by some traders and carried to the North and apprenticed to a carpenter and learned to be an expert woodworker. On reaching manhood he went to Pike County, Mississippi, where he was married, and, in 1830, moved with his family to Louisiana, near the present town of Many. Indians still roamed the woods, and wild animals were numerous. He was compelled to cut his way through a dense cane brake to make a clearing for the house which he constructed. Mr. Mains was the father of seven children, [NOTE: actually, he was the father of 13 children, 7 sons] one of whom, Noah, is still living, a resident of Pleasant Hill. William, the oldest son, who shared with his father the trials of pioneer life, was born in 1817 in Pike County, Mississippi, and died June 26, 1904. During the Mexican War he moved army equipment from Fort Jesup to the old Block House on the Sabine River. At his death he was survived by two sons, W.C. and Rich Mains, and two daughters Madames W.L. Shull and Asa Vines."

Wallace L. McKeehan, on his website SONS OF DEWITT COLONY, TEXAS, shows that he was drafted in Washington Parish Louisiana into the War of 1812. Served as a Private in Captain Thomas Bickham's Co, 12 and 13 Reg'ts Louisiana Militia (consolidated). His occupation was listed as farmer and his religion Methodist.

Notes:

Said by some to be a daughter of Jacob Alford and Elizabeth Bryant, however Allen Weeks Methvin suggests it is also possible she was born to Jacob by his second wife, Frank Seaborn.

Allen Weeks Methvin notes that "Jacob Alford was probably born in Bute County, North Carolina. After some reorganization of counties, he lived in Franklin County and later moved to Cumberland County, where he was enumerated in 1790. Before 1795 he moved to Montgomery County, Georgia, where tax and land records show he lived until about 1806. By 1807 he was in Louisiana where his twin sons were born. Louisiana land records prove that he had settled on land in what was to become Washington Parish by December 1807. He was given headrights on 641.32 acres in what was to become Sec. 54 with the north boundary on what was to become the state line and the eastern boundary on the Bogue Chitto River. His father willed to him "the land and plantation whereon I now live lying on both sides Tarr River together with six cows and calves, six sows and pigs and one Breading (sic) mare to him and his heirs forever."

Jacob married Martha Barksdale "Frankie" Seaborn about 1792 in Cumberland County, North Carolina. Martha was born on 29 Sep 1766 in North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
