Referred to by his friends as "Long Charlie", he was vitally interested in the growth and economy of Sabine County. He was a merchant, farmer and owned a sawmill. His interest in the growth of Sabine County was such that he personally hired a geologist to come from Pennsylvania to test for oil, gas and other minerals. He hired politicians to attend and speak at his annual July 4th picnics, which were held at his old home in Isla. These picnics were open to the public and were always well attended. His aim in thi was to improve the knowledge and friendship between the politicians and the people they represented. Charles lost heavily in the depression, and also in the Texas Land Bank, so much in fact, that on Feb. 9, 1930, he suffered a stroke, from which he died two days later. He was buried at the old Vickers Cemetery. His beloved Wife, Kate...was buried beside her husband. their children were also buried in the same cemetery except when stated otherwise. The only possession we (the family) have of Harrision Vickers, Jr. and his son, Charles Harris Vickers, is a piece of gold. This money was given to Charles by his father when he was seven years old, in exchange for a 'prize pig' of which Charles was overly fond, and more than a little reluctant to part with. He was so grieved over the exchange that he never spent the money, and when my mother, Hazel, was seven years of age, he gave her this little gold piece" writes Mrs. R.G. Charles married Caledonia "Kate" Lee Bennett on 16 Feb 1885 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas. Caledonia (daughter of Charles "Charlie" Milton Bennett, Sr. and Mary Louise Brazeale) was born before 1868 in Negreet, Sabine Parish, Louisiana; died on 11 Jun 1934 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Old Vickers Cemetery, Sabine County, Texas. Harrison Vickers, Jr., b Ga. ca 1812, moved to Fla. in 1817 when his father, Harrison Sr. bought land in the township of Tallahasse, Leon County. In 1834, Harrison Vickers Jr arrived in Texas. In 1837, he m. Sarah Ann Mason, (b) in Ala. (the dtr. of James and Elizabeth Mason). Harrision Vickers Jr., referred to as Harris Vickers on his headright papers, rec'd his land from the Sabine County Land Board in 1838, at Milam, Texas. He was a member of the Sexton Masonic Lodge at Sexton, and after it was moved to Milam. He was a farmer and the family home was near the Old Vickers Cemetery in the Isla Community. His descendants still live on the land. (White and Toole, p 38).

His tombstone is inscribed "Came to Texas From Georgia 1833"

Harrison married Sarah Ann Mason about 1837. Sarah (daughter of James Mason and Elizabeth ???) was born about 1821 in Alabama; died about 1891 in Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Old Vickers Cemetery, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Might she instead be the daughter of John and Fannie Mason, listed on the 1835 Sabine District census? They also had a 17 year old daughter named Sarah.
