According to an article (courtesy of Jeanne Darnell) from The Farmersville Times, dated August 19, 1903, and published in the COLLIN CHRONICLES (Vol. IX, No. 1, Fall 1988):

(Near the close of the Civil War) R. D. Bumpass, orderly sergeant, was drowned in Red River, May 24, 1864, while trying to cross. He was succeeded by Robert Neil, a brother of HAM NEIL, who lives near Cowskin (Creek)."

Hamilton married Melissa Rosetta "Zettie" Hall on 21 May 1893 in Collin County, Texas. Melissa (daughter of Mashack Hall and Eliza Jane Neil) was born on 4 Dec 1867 in Farmersville, Collin County, Texas; died on 31 Dec 1955 in Mangum, Greer County, Oklahoma; was buried on 2 Jan 1956 in Cave Creek Cemetery, Vinson, Harmon County, Oklahoma. VINSON MEMORIES (Published by VINSON HISTORY BOOK COMMITTEE Christins Spurlin, Chairman, Copyright 1995) contains a biographical sketch, along with a picture, of Hamilton Neil and his wife Rosetta (Zettie) and their four children. It notes that the Neil's, along with their four children, moved by covered wagon from Farmersville, Texas to Oklahoma around 1898. Hamilton was teaching school in Collin County, Texas, earning $30 a month, when he and Zettie married in 1893. About five years later they moved to Granite, Oklahoma where his sister, Ella, and her husband, John SHERRILL and earlier moved. Hamilton helped build the railroad at Granite working two mules and a dirt dipper. Then he moved his family north of the mountain to farm. In the 1901 lottery, he drew 160 acres near Lawton, and moved there. In January, 1907 the Neils bought a farm one and one-forth miles east of Vinson and a half mile south. At Vinson, relatives of the NEILS within visiting distances were the SHERRILLS with whom they exchanged many overnight visits and a sister of Zettie's, SARAH JONES, who lived about 10 miles west of Vinson with her family. After Hamilton died, Zettie attempted to continue farming but she had some bad luck when one of her mules ate some grasshopper poison and died, and then later the barn burned. She gave up, rented the farm, and moved into Vinson.

Zettie and Ham Neil also raised her great-nephew, Jack Strong, whose mother Mary Ella Hall, died shortly when he was less than a year old.

Robert married Diannah Jane Crawford on 15 Oct 1867 in Texas. Diannah was born about 1845 in Missouri; died about 1935. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Robert's wife, Dinnah Neil, applied for a Confederate Pension on 16 Oct 1931 based on Robert's service. She stated they were married on 15 oct 1867 in Collin County, Texas, and that Robert Died on 8 Jul 1881.

From: Testimony of Hezekiah P. Neal and William B. Neal in Chancery Court Case dated 1841 " Heirs of Hamilton Neal vs. Exec. of Grimes Neal," Scott Co. VA

They (Grimes and William B. Neil) say that Patrick lived with or near Grimes in Scott County about 12 years before his death, and so far as they know , said Patrick never set forth any such claim, until Grimes death. That in 1833 or 1834 the Grimes and Patrick settled their accounts . They also mention that they believe Patrick is upward of 38 years of age and that Hamilton jr. attained the age of 21 about the year 1831 or 1832. That Hays is now 31 yrs old and has been married to Elizabeth for 5 yrs before the institution of the suit.

Patrick Neal m. Comfort Kilgore in Scott County VA, where his Uncle Grimes Neal lived. Patrick live with Grimes and near Grimes after his fathers death.
