William Maurice Collier

William Maurice Collier, 49, died Thursday, June 30, 2011, in his home in La Porte after an illness.

He was born in Houston to Barney and Hester Davidson Collier. He was a warehouseman for the Centerpoint Energy Company and had lived in the Houston area all his life.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Ann Collier of La Porte; daughters, Elaine Hamman of Oklahoma City, OK, and Candis Lovelace and her husband Travis of Aurora; grandson, Christian Peyton Lovelace; brother; and sister, Susan Jones of Tennessee.

Graveside services were held Saturday, July 2, in the Hemphill Cemetery.

Services were under the direction of Starr Funeral Home in Hemphill..

At the time of the 1940 Federal census, Barnett and Nettie Collier (ages 38 and 39, both born in Tennessee) were living in Houston, Texas with son Barnett C. Jr., age 18, born Alabama and daughter Kathryn, age 13, born in Texas.

They were located in Pr. 1, Block 31, ED 8 SD 259-19, and on Sheet 10A. Barnett C. Collier Sr was a shoe salesman.

Barnett married Hester Maxine Davidson on 3 Jul 1946. Hester (daughter of Richard Franklin Davidson and Rutha Benina "Nina" White) was born on 9 Feb 1921 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas; died on 6 Jan 2001 in Houston, Harris County, Texas; was buried in Hemphill City Cemetery, Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas. Hester Davidson Collier, 79, of Hemphill died Saturday, January 6, 2001 at a Houston hospital.

Mrs. Collier, born Feb. 9, 1921, in Hemphill as a daughter of the late Ruthie Nina (White) and Richard Frank Davidson, was a retired registered nurse, having served as company nurse for Mossier Steel. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and American Business Women's Association.

Survivors: sons, William Collier and Craig Collier, both of Houston; daughter Susan Jones of Houston; sisters Betty Ferguson and Zeda Schultz, both of Hemphill and Madie Snowden of Beaumont; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Jan. 8 at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. D.W. McCasland officiating. Interment followed at Hemphill City Cemetery.

Richard married Rutha Benina "Nina" White on 28 Dec 1902 in Sabine County, Texas. Rutha (daughter of Henry Strickland White, Jr and Mary Cordelia "Delia" Buckley) was born on 15 Apr 1884 in Texas; died on 6 Nov 1960 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Hemphill City Cemetery, Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas. Notes:

When Napolean Mason of Sabine County, applied for a Confederate Pension, he stated that he served in the C. S. A. , Company I, 1rst Texas Regiment, Infantry as a private. He made his application on July 9, 1909 before County Judge J. H. McGown and witnesses W R Davidson and T B Davidson. They both testified that they served in the same company with Mr. Mason.
