Mr. and Mras. Carson Bragg wre honored April 12, 1964 at their home with an open house, on the Fiftieth anniversary of their marriage. Approximately 60 guests attended the celebration between the hours of 2 and 5 pm.

Hostesses were Mrs. George Bragg, Mrs. David Bragg, Mrs. Herman Bragg, Jr., Mrs. Ardell Wise, Mrs. Jim Wilson, Miss Darlene Bragg and Miss Elizabeth Bragg.

They were married at 4 p.m. April 12, 1914, Easter Sunday, at the home of her late parents, Mr. and Mrs. Trav Russell, into which her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Dorsey had moved at the time of her parents death, and which was located in the Isla community, Sabine County. They attended services that morning at Time Methodist Church, where a prominent Methodist minister, the Rev. C. A. Perkins, was preaching.

There was a big Sunday family dinner at the bride's home, and after the ceremony, at which the Rev. Jim Mason officiated, the went to the home of the groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. B Bragg for a wedding supper, after which everyone attended a community singing at the home of Carson's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Bragg.

The young couple spent a month with the D. B. Braggs' in the Bragg Settlement on the Sabine River, after which they attended a three week camp meeting, conducted by Perkins. Mrs. Bragg had inherited some furniture from her parents, which was taken to the camp meeting. She even had a stove, a rarity at camp meetings, and which all the other ladies wanted to use. They had a wonderful time, with a singing school held in the afternoons, and preaching and cooking the rest of the time.

The Braggs bought a place near his parents and built a house, in which they lived unitl 1928, when they bought the place on which they now live. They have always farmed and raised cattle.

There were four children, three of whom survive, Mrs. Evonne Cochran, Beaumont; Mrs. Doyla Dean Williams of Memphis, Tennessee; and Alton Bragg, who lives with them. They have three grandchildren, Travis Earl Layfield of Bossier City, Louisiana, Linda Kay Willimas and Robert Craig Williams of Memphis, and four great grandchildren.

Out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. Steele Russell, Houston; Mrs. Esther Gilchrist and son, Pat; Mr. and Mrs. Cockran, all of Beamont; Mr. and Mrs. Travis Layfield, Bossier City, Louisiana; Mrs. Anna Maxey and daughter, Mattie Lea, Miss Hettie and Hettie Ayers; Mr. and Mrs. Ural Maxey and daughter; Dr. and Mrs. Lloyd Murdock, all of Zwolle, Louisiana; Mrs. Hattie Crow Chesser, Shreveport, Louisiana; and Mr. and Mrs. Hayne Booker, Newton; Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Wilson, Lufkin; and Misses Tracy and Cynthia Ellison of San Augustine.

The Braggs were farmers, and also raised sheep, which he sheared and she spun into yarn, and then knit into sweaters, gloves and socks for her family. (Speights, Old Timers of Sabine County, p. 20).

Benjamin married Tibatha Emeline Halbert. Tibatha (daughter of Joel Halbert and Emeline Grindle) was born on 17 Dec 1852 in Texas; died on 12 Jan 1926 in Milam, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in New Hope Cemetery, Milam, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Tibatha Emeline Halbert was born on 17 Dec 1852 in Texas (daughter of Joel Halbert and Emeline Grindle); died on 12 Jan 1926 in Milam, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in New Hope Cemetery, Milam, Sabine County, Texas.

    Notes:

Although the transcription of the New Hope Cemetery shows her as Tibatha Dorsey, it appears that after Frank Dorsey died in 1886, she remarried Stephen JONES, probably around 1889, as the 1900 census shows they had been married 11 years. Three of her children by Frank Dorsey are listed as JONES in 1900. Since all were born prior to 1889, and since other records show Dosie and William J. had the last name of Dorsey, it is assumed this is in error. In 1910, the widowed Tibatha Jones is living between son Will Dorsey (shown as Will Jones in 1900) and daughter Rosa Dorsey Chambers.

The 1910 census shows her as the mother of nine children in total, 7 born to Frank Dorsey and 2 born in Stephen Jones. Two of these children had predeceased her.

Virgie Speights wrote that she owned a loom on which cloth was woven for skirts, trousers and dresses, and beautiful blankets and coverlets.
