Amos McLemore

Notes:

Based on the 1860 census, Amos appears to have been born ca. 1813.

Amos was said to be the son of Raiford McLemore by researcher Robert McLemore Butler. However, based on the 1820 and 1830 Sampson County, NC census enumeration, Raiford did not appear to have any sons that were this age. Additionally, Raiford McLemore appears to have also been the father or otherwise closely associated with an Amos McLemore who was born ca 1845. Finally, in the Division of the lands of Raiford McLemore, done ca 1864, Amos was not mentioned.

Due to all of these factors, it seems unlikely to me that Amos was a son of Raiford McLemore. It would therefore seem likely a that he was actually the son of one of Raiford's three older brothers, Hezekiah, Henry or Tobias.

Very little is known about the makeup of HEZEKIAH's family. It appears that Hezekiah may have died sometime after 1813 when his last land transaction in Sampson County is recorded. It is possible, however, that he left surviving children in or around Sampson County. It is also possible that he moved away from North Carolina, presumably taking his family with him. James L. McLemore, III thinks it a strong possibility that Hezekiah moved to South Carolina, where he died ca. 1818. Based on naming patterns, however, it seems Hezekiah was more likely the father of Raiford McLemore, born ca 1815 than of Amos, born ca 1813. It is possible, however, that he was the father of Amos.

HENRY had a son that was born between 1810 and 1820, and therefore he could be the father of Amos McLemore. Henry's family was in Bladen County, which was adjacent to Sampson County, at the time of the 1820 and 1830 census. Additionally, in 1870, a deed shows that Amos & Jemima McLemore sold property in Sampson County that was described as "Beginning at a stake on the old Pond two pines as pointers below his old house, whence with Henry McLEMORE's line...." That Amos's land adjoined land once owned by Henry adds weight to this possibility. However, James L. McLemore, III has ruled out Henry due to a Will filed by Henry in Georgia, and Amos is NOT included in his list of children by either of his two wives. Henry's sons born between 1910 and 1915 appear to have been John Wright McLemore and Wilson McLemore, and therefore Henry could not have been the father of Amos.

Finally, TOBIAS McLemore, was also listed as having a son born between 1810 and 1815. By process of elimination, Tobias seems to be the most likely fit as being the father of Amos, unless of course Amos was the son of Hezekiah and Raiford, also born ca 1810-1815, was the son of Tobias.

Based on all of the above, it is assumed that Amos is the son of Tobias, and Raiford the son of Hezekiah. Further proof should be sought out to support both assumptions.

This indenture made the fourteenth day of February in year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred & thirty five between Amos MACLAMORE of the County of Sampson and State of North Carolina of one part & Raiford MACLAMORE of the State and County aforesaid of the other part....I the said Amos MACLAMORE for and in consideration of the sum of thirty-five dollars to me paid in had by said Raiford MACLAMORE the receipt whereof the said Amos MACLAMORE doth hereby acknowledge have given granted and by these presents doth give grant convey and confirm unto the Raiford MACLAMORE his heirs or assigns a certain tract or parcel of land in the County aforesaid containing by estimation one hundred acres of Land to the same more or less lying on the East side of Little Cohara between the tract of land occupied the said MACLAMORE and another tract...by Thomas PAGE and other wise bounded by the Big Branch on the North and the Big Branch on the South log...to have and to hld to him the said Raiford MACLAMORE his heirs and assigns forever in fee Simple and free from all encumberances...the said Amos MACLAMORE doth convenant and agree to and with the said Raiford MACLAMORE to warrant and forever defend the above mentioned land....In witness whereof said Amos MACLAMORE had her unto set his hand and fixed his seal the day and date above written by Amos (his mark) MACLAMORE Signed Sealed & delivered presents of Lott RICH, SR. and Lott RICH Registered the 3rd of April 1835 W. Amos and Jemima jointly sold land to Aaron Simmons in 1854, as noted below. Aaron and Jemima were both heirs of Sherwood Simmons, presumably siblings. They also jointly sold land to John Register in 1870, relationship unknown, and to J.W. WRIGHT in 1884. At the time of the 1884 sale, they were living in Cumberland County.

In 1860, in Little Coharie, Sampson County, the following family can be found.

It was also indicated that neither Sarah's could read or write. Presumably Tobias was able to. Additionally, in Sampson County on 10 May1862 a Tabitha McLEMORE married Mechack HALES. Might this be one of the missing daughters of Tobias McLemore? If she was his daughter, however, it is not known where she was at the time of the 1850 or 1860 census.

Robert McLemore Butler notes that a Tobias McLEMORE was a Pvt. Co A Regt 30 Inf. Born in 1838 in Sampson County. He was a turpentine distiller. Enlisted September 1, 1861 in Clinton. Hospitalized August 1862 at Lynchburg VA.

Tobias married Sarah "Sallie" ??? before 1810. Sarah was born about 1790 in North Carolina; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Based simply on his name, 24 year old Tobias McLemore appears to be a son of Tobias McLemore, and grandson of Archibald McLemore, both of Sampson County.

The older Tobias McLemore, born between 1780 and 1790, can not be located on the 1850 or 1860 census. It appears he was already dead. However, there was NOT a son under the age of 5 listed in his household in 1840.

Beginning in 1804, Archibald gave his land to his sons: to Hezekiah in 1804 he gave 100 acres; to Henry in 1810 he gave 150 acres; to Tobias in 1810 he gave 300 (sic) acres; and to Raiford in 1812 he gave his remaining land & Dwelling. Raiford b bet 1785-1790. Raiford had a son named Hezekiah born ca 1827"

Married:
Archibald McLemore of Duplin/Sampson County, NC was NOT married to Sarah PLUMLEY/PLUMEE as is sometimes shown. It was actually a younger Archibald (a son of John McLemore, the Revolutionary Soldier), born 1787 in North Carolina and later moved to Knox County, Tennessee, who married Sarah Plumlee sometime before 1807, when their children were born. This was well after the birth of the four sons currently attributable to the elder Archibald McLemore of Duplin/Sampson County, NC.


In addition to at least four sons born to Archibald and his unknown wife, Robert McLemore Butler also shows they had a daughter Susan, born ca 1770, and James McLemore, III shows a daughter, Lavinia (or Susannah), born ca 1790.

James McLemore, III writes that . "Assuming William came with his father Wright to NC in 1750+/-, I assume his son William Jr. was born in Sampson Co., NC, but it's close enough that it could have been either Va. or NC. It was this William Jr. who I have as the ancestor of a lot/most? of the Johnson County NC family, of which our local high school principal Thomas McLemore is a member."

William McLemore was patented land (#2087) on 29 Oct 1772 in Duplin County (Bk 47, pg 94)...150 acres, grant #355, issued...entry #489, entered June 26, 1779, book #47, pg 94 -- E. side of Little Cohera. This later became part of Sampson County. (Courtesy of Robert McLemore Butler)

I have in my notes, unsourced, a reference to a deed between McLemore, William Grantee Book 6, Page 432 Deed Southey FISHER to William McLEMORE Dated 30 Nov 1779 30 pounds for 100 acres "on the side of little Cohary beg by marsh branch" Wit: John MORGAIN and Joseph FOULLER

Could he also be the father of Mary McLEMORE, who wed Jordan GILLAM in Sampson/Duplin County, NC in 1779. Bond: Harris GILLAM Wit: John Heflin Cooper

Dated 24 December in the...year after American Independence and the Year of our Lord 1780...

Between William McLEMORE of the province of North Carolina and County of Duplin and Gabriel HOLMES of the (locations) aforesaid

William McLEMORE for the sum of Thirty (30) pounds paid by Gabriel HOLMES .....convey a certain plantation...containing by survey One Hundred (100) acres of land lying and being in the County aforesaid On the East side of little Cohary being the plantation whereon the above said William McLEMORE now hath his dwelling...beginning by the marsh Branch ...Gabriel HOLMES...running up the Branch North East...running to the said Gabriel HOLMES line to the Beginning of the said land for Southey FISHER ....date the twenty second day of July 1774...conveyed by deed from the said FISHER for the aforesaid William McLEMORE....date the November 30th 1779 and from the said William McLEMORE to the above said Gabriel HOLMES...(to include) all mines and minerals saving an fifth part of the ore of gold and silver...and minerals together with the liberty of Hunting Fishing and Trawling... .....Rents of four shillings...for every hundred acres of land hereby bargained and sold which yearly will become due and the said William McLEMORE for himself his heirs....
