    Philip Gandy

    Philip Pedras Gandy, 71, of Hemphill died early Monday, Oct. 23, 1995, at Sabine County Hospital in Hemphill.

    He was born Nov. 15, 1923, in Hemphill as a son of the late Pedras P. Gandy and Wilna (Watson) Gandy and had been a lifelong resident of Sabine County. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the East Mayfield Baptist Church. Gandy was retired from the clothing and dry cleaning business with the family operated Gandy's in Hemphill.

    Survivors: wife, Emily Ann Gandy, daughters, Tera Gandy and Vicci Fuller, both of Hemphill, sons, Philip Mark Gandy of Hemphill and Jeffery Scott Gandy of Bartesville, OK; step-daughters, Diane Freedman of Beaumont, Marsha Carr and Janet East, both of Pt. Arthur; a grandson, Dustin Fuller of Hemphill; and brother, Leon Gandy and wife Frances of Oklahoma City.

    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Gravelhill community with Bro. Wendell Ferguson officiating. Interment was at Hemphill City Cemetery. Services were handled by Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill.

    Notes:

    Virgie Speights writes that she was brough up in Milam where she went to school. Her parents were in the Mercantile business in Milam, where her only brother surviving [as of 1963] still lived. She married Lee P. GANDY in 1895, and moved to East Pendeleton, where their two children, Lula Marie and Pedras Perry Gandy were born. Lula died at age 5. The Gandy's moved to Runnels County, Texas, where they lived until forced to come home because of the drought in 1912. (Speights, Old Timers of Sabine County, Texas, p. 35).
