Michael (Mike) E Butcher, age 75, of Lincoln, passed away on Friday, November 17, 2023. Mike was born November 1, 1948 to Paul and Sylvia Chudly Butcher. Mike is survived by his loving children, Andrew (Stephanie) Butcher, Jessica Butcher; siblings, Pamela Butcher, Mark (Eileen) Butcher; grandchildren, Jack Butcher, Natalie Butcher; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The son of Frank and Pearl Butcher of Cambridge, Massachusetts. He served in the armed forces during World War II (Milligan, p 252). He has a degree in Civil Engineering and worked as a paving contractor.

Paul married Sylvia "Sibbie" Ruth Chudly on 4 Dec 1943 in Massachusetts. Sylvia (daughter of Edward E. Chudly and Anna Hromadka) was born on 16 Jul 1925 in Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska; died on 1 Dec 2017 in Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska; was buried in Lincoln Memorial Park, Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska. Nicknamed Sibbie. (Milligan, p 252). She was in the Milligan School Band, in 1937, along with her sister Goldie. Sybil played the saxophone. (Milligan, 1988-2008, p. 5).

Sylvia Ruth Butcher, age 92, of Lincoln, passed away on December 1, 2017. She was born on July 16, 1925, in Milligan, to Edward and Anna (Hromadka) Chudly. Sylvia is survived by her sons, Michael Butcher of Lincoln; Mark (Eileen) Butcher of Seal Beach, California, daughter, Pam Butcher of Omaha; six grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Grace Delaney of Lincoln. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul, son David, granddaughter Juli-Ann, parents, brother, Edward, and sister, Goldie.

Sylvia's wishes were to be cremated and a private graveside service will be held at a later date. Interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Lincoln Food Bank.

They were the parents of David Paul (born 4 Nov 1944), Michael Edward (b. 1 Nov 1948) and twins Pamela Ann and Mark Allen (born 3 Nov 1954). Eldest son David Paul married Rosa Ann Lackner, who was a daughter of Kenneth and Betty Lackner. She was born 30 April 1944, and she and Paul were the parents of David Paul Butcher, Jr., born Sept 1964 and Julie Ann Marie, who died as an infant.

When he registered for the draft during World War I, he was listed as Frank John Butcher of 2 Burchard, Pawnee, Nebraska. His date of birth was shown as April 26, 1899, and his occupation was that of a self-employed farmer. He was medium heighth and build, with brown eyes and black hair. His nearest relatived was J. N. Butcher of the same address.

Said to be a son of James Newell Butcher and Ethelind DUNN, and to have died ca 1968 in Tennessee.

Born in a soddie, Edward graduated from Exeter High School and taught country school for one year. After that, he worked in the Milligan lumber yard.

During the First World War, he served in France. General John J. Pershing was reviewing the troops and paused in front of Edward, asking him where he was from. Edward replied, "Nebraska, Sir." "They grow them tall in Nebraska, don't they?" said General Pershing and walked on. Edward was 6'5 inches, and stood out among the rest of the doughboys. (Milligan, pps 251-252).

He was a former school teacher, and worked for the Elgin Watch company and later for the Nebraska State Library.

Immediately after their marriage, John and Marie moved to Hayes County to homestead. After proving their land, they moved to Saline county, where they farmed for eight years, and then to Fillmore County, where they farmed for an additional 26 years until their retirement. (Milligan, p 255).

Notes:

The son of Joseph HROMADKA and Katirna HLAVOTA. He was orphaned at the age of six, and cared for by relatives. He was conscripted into the Austrian-Hungarian army, and moved to America 1902 to avoid further service in that army. He worked in the coal mines in Moravia. (Milligan, p 311).

Karel married Marie Cudly on 23 Apr 1901 in Velka Lhota, Moravia. Marie was born on 3 Feb 1880 in Velka Lhota, Moravia; died on 6 Aug 1970 in Nebraska; was buried in Bohemian National Cemetery (Milligan South), Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

The youngest child of Jan CUDLY and Marie DOUPNIK. She was the sister of Anna Cudly, the wife of Paul FOYT of Saline County (Milligan, p 311).
