DEMING, NEW MEXICO - Sherrill Joyce Davis Born January 21st, 1952 in Friend, Nebraska
Died October 14, 2023 in Deming, New Mexico

Sherrill attended school at Milligan Public Schools in Nebraska and graduated from the University of Nebraska with a public teaching degree. She worked in management with Carol Wright for many years before co-founding Carpets Direct floor covering store with her husband in Lincoln, Ne.

She found peace and enjoyment in nature, hiking, gardening, family, chocolate, and coffee amongst other things. She moved to the mountains outside of Deming, New Mexico with her husband in 2008 upon retirement.

Sherrill had a huge heart and loved her husband, Tom, son, Travis, and all of her family and friends. She passed away after living with cancer the past 2 and a half years.

She will be forever missed by the people in her life. She would want us all to enjoy our lives and be good to one another!

    Notes:

    Married:
Thomas rented farm land besides his own farm, having as many as four to six teams of horses to farm with. He took pride in his horses and erected a large barn in 1916 which hosted many dances. The children loved to roller skate in the large hay mow in early spring when the hay supply was almost fed and before the summer hay crop was hoisted into the barn through the large door from the hay racks with slings full of hay. Extra farm hands were hired during the busy seasons. Mary also helped farm the many acres, all done with horse-drawn equipment. There was wheat and oats to be shocked and corn to be husked by hand. The smaller children rode along in the wagon in a sheltered corner of the box with warm bricks to keep them cozy at picking time. A combine purchased in 1937 changed harvesting. Erwin and Irene helped drive the tractor pulling the combine while Mary, Dorothy and Darlene scooped grain in the granary. Dorothy and Mary did the milking, a task Irene could never master. Irene was her dad's extra helper in the field. (Milligan, p 223).

Paul and Anna had 16 children in their first 22 year of marriage. To provide for the family a large garden was planted which the children helped to hoe and weed. Potatoes, onions, squash, pumpkins, and carrots were put in the cellar under the house for winter use. They had a variety of fruit trees and grapes in their orchard. Five to seven cows were milked every day and they churned their own butter. Chicken and duck eggs were set under hens to hatch. Sometimes they had 24 hens setting at one time. Later the family purchased two incubators. Paul raised Red Polled cattle and hogs. There was a smoke house north of the house which was used to smoke bacon and ham everytime Paul and the sons butchered. The older girls did the cooking and baking. Four large loaves of bread were baked every day. (History of Milligan, Nebraska, pp. 228-229)
