In THE PAYNES OF VIRGINIA, the author notes that the badly defaced tombstone of Elizabeth was discovered in 1907 beneath the tomb of her second husband, Captain McCarty, and read "(Here liet)h the body of Elizabeth (daught)er of Humphrey Pope, Gentleman, by (Elizabeth) his wife, first the wife of (William Pay)ne, Gentleman, to whom sh(e bore two so)ns and two daughters, and last(ly of) Daniel McCarty, Esq., to (whom she) was married 19th October (1699 and b)ore four sons and four daugh(ters). She was born ___ of June 1667."

After Elizabeth POPE PAYNE lost William PAYNE she married [on 19 Oct 1699] Capt. Daniel MCCARTY who died 4 May 1724. He was the son of Dennis MCCARTHY and Elizabeth BILLINGTON of Richmond Co., VA then he married 2nd Mrs. Ann FITZHUGH widow of William FITZHUGH and she was the daughter of Richard LEE and Lettice CORBIN.

Elizabeth married William Payne in 1691 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. William (son of John Payne and Margaret ???) was born before 1652 in Virginia; died on 23 Feb 1697 in Westmoreland County, Virginia; was buried in Yeocomico, Westmoreland County, Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

1. William Payne was born on 10 Aug 1692 in Westmoreland County, Virginia; died on 24 Aug 1776 in Fairfax County, Virginia.
2. Edward Payne was born in 1693 in Westmoreland County, Virginia; died in 1702.
3. Elizabeth Payne was born in 1695 in Westmoreland County, Virginia; and died.
4. Mary Payne was born about 1697 in Westmoreland County, Virginia; and died.

Humphrey married Elizabeth Hawkins. Elizabeth was born before 1649; died about 1717 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

She was the daughter of Richard HAWKINS b 1641. William PAYNE (her son-in-law) was listed guardian in her will. Elizabeth HAWKINS POPE Married 2nd to Richard Youell and had Harmon YOUELL. Then she married 3rd to Patrick MUCKLEROY.
