Cova Jean Williams writes that he was the son of Denton Carter Anderson, of Georgia, and Maria King.

He died fixing a fence. Cova's mother tells fond stories of the grandfather. She tells of how he would hire a doctor to come to his house on a Sunday and inoculate all of his grandchildren. They would line them all (54) up like cattle.

Denton married Charlie Ada Hunt on 25 Dec 1890 in Antelope, Jack County, Texas. Charlie was born on 4 Jul 1874 in Stephenville, Erath County, Texas; died on 14 Sep 1949; was buried in Hope Cemetery, Stephens County, Oklahoma. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Her father was J. Tom Hunt of Alabama, and her mother was M.W. (Unknown) born circa 1849 in Tennessee.

The family of J. Tom Hunt is on Page 6 1880 Census for Erath County, Texas. The census shows his Father and Mother were born in Alabama. His brothers name was Bill HUNT. Cova was told he slept out on the porch with a pistol beside his bed. She also heard that he shot and killed a Mexican. In 1889 the family moved to Jack County, Texas.

Notes:

The family bible had his death date as 11 Mar 1923, Death Certificate has death date 13 Mar 1923. Walter went to Chandler, Arizona in 1918 then returned to Oklahoma shortly after that. He died of the flu, with the secondary cause of death being pneumonia. This was the year of the great Spanish Flu epidemic. The undertaker was L. Woodward, Duncan. The death certificate also showed him as age 40 years, 3 months, which would put his year of birth around 1883.

Walter's wife, Molly, returned to Arizona with her children, except for Blanche who was already married. Molly moved to Arizona with Fred Payne and his wife, who was her sister. Fred is the brother to Walter.

Cova Jean Hurst Gentry writes that "Molly came to live with our family for a short time when I was a little girl. I remember that I slept with her. Moms tells me that she was diabetic and would give me money to go to Van's store to buy us candy. Van's store was on the corner of B. and Fig where the annex to the Trinity Baptist Church is. She married a second time to Clarence DAVIS. Her father was Ulysses Sherman LOWRY d. 10 Mar 1928, and her Mother Ida Francis MORLEY. d. 29 Jun 1922. Her grandparents were Irvin LOWRY and Margaret CAMPBELL."

In a biography of his brother-in-law, John O'Neill, he was referenced as "Newton, a farmer near Wewoka, Oklahoma."

When she was around six year old, ca 1918-1919, Roonie recalls going from her father's ranch to the big Payne farm, over the hill about 1/2 a mile away. When they arrived, Levi Newton Payne and his family were in two covered wagons starting a trip to Arizona. Her parents had gone to the farm to say their goodbyes. She remembered that one of the young children appeared to be retarded/disabled in some way. The family remained in Arizona, which is where Levi Newton died around 1932. (This story was told to Charles Strong by his mother around 1990).

In the copy of the Will of William H. Payne, he lists Levi as recieving $400. Levi was taught to read by his wife Lizzie, a school teacher. Levi Newton was in the 1889 run and got land near Oklahoma City, but traded it for a horse. (Source: Cova Jean Williams).

He died from acute angina pectoris on December 3, 1932. The informant was F.L. (Fred Lee) Payne. The undertaker was M.L. Gibbons. he was recorded as 76 years, 4 months and 1 day old. (From his death certificate filed in Arizona). A memorial stone was erected over his grave in 1988.

Notes:

Ken Harver writes that she was a school teacher. Cova Jean Williams writes that she was buried at the Owens Prairie Cemetery, Stephens County, Oklahoma. If this is correct, it may have been in an unmarked grave as she can not be found on the 2001 Survey done by Karla Sharp for the USGenWeb and OkGenWeb Project. Nor can a listing be found for her on FindAGrave.

(Medical):Ken Harvey notes that she was crippled, and had a goiter.
