2. | Richard Benjamin Powell was born on 14 Jul 1854 in Mississippi; died on 3 Nov 1921 in Browndell, Jasper County, Texas; was buried in Brookeland Cemetery, Brookeland, Sabine County, Texas. Notes:
His tombstone shows that he was a Mason, and was inscribed "Gone by not Forgotten." Kay Parker McCary shows him as a son of H. J. Powell and Nancy Ann Burch. However, CR Burkhead, on the FindAGrave memorial page he created, lists his parents as Richard Ealie Powell and Mary Ann Gay, and spouse of Margarette Elizabeth Martin.

3. | Margaret "Marge" Elizabeth Martin was born on 21 Nov 1862 in Brookeland, Sabine County, Texas (daughter of Thomas Jefferson Martin and Rebecca "Becky" Richardson); died on 7 Mar 1937 in Brookeland, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Brookeland Cemetery, Brookeland, Sabine County, Texas. Notes:
In her annotated transcription of the Brookeland Cemetery, Kay Parker McCary shows her as the wife of A. J. (???) Powell, but later shows her husband as Richard Benjamin Powell.
A J Powell was born 14 Mar 1855-died 7 Aug 1927. Did this listing of her husband as A J Powell perhaps relate to a second marriage for Margaret, or was it simply an error?

Thomas married Rebecca "Becky" Richardson. Rebecca was born in Feb 1832 in Louisiana; died about 1907 in Texas; was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery (aka Whitehead Cemetery or Martin-Whitehead Cemetery), Pineland, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
|
7. | Rebecca "Becky" Richardson was born in Feb 1832 in Louisiana; died about 1907 in Texas; was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery (aka Whitehead Cemetery or Martin-Whitehead Cemetery), Pineland, Sabine County, Texas. Notes:
Virgie Collier Speights, in OLD TIMERS OF SABINE COUNTY, TEXAS, lists her last name both as Richardson (p. 46) and as Watkins (p. 54).
Notes:
Married:
In Virgie Collier Speights June 11, 1964 column about Rev. and Mrs. Bob Strickland, it is noted that Bob's maternal grandparents were "Tom and Beckie (Watkins--sic) MARTIN, and they have five sons and two daughters, Frank, Case, Lip, Jimmy, Ed, Marge and Harriet Ann, his mother" (Old Timer of Sabine County, Texas, p. 54).
The 1900 census showed that Rebecca had five children, four of whom were still living. Based on both the column referenced above, and the various census enumerations from 1850 through 1880, it appears she had at least the seven children listed above, and possibly one other son that may have died relatively young, Clinton (b. 1855). Perhaps the census information could be interpreted as Rebecca had a total of nine children....five deceased and four still living (or vice versa).
Children:
- William Franklin "Frank" Martin was born in Jul 1847 in Pineland, Sabine County, Texas; died on 16 Jan 1921 in Pineland, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery (aka Whitehead Cemetery or Martin-Whitehead Cemetery), Pineland, Sabine County, Texas.
- Harriet Ann Martin was born on 29 Jan 1852 in Texas; died on 19 Jul 1915; was buried in Bronson Cemetery, Bronson, Sabine County, Texas.
- Clinton Martin was born about 1855 in Texas; and died.
- Lewis C. "Case" "Casey" Martin was born on 17 Feb 1857 in Texas; died on 19 May 1908; was buried in Martin Cemetery (Martin's Chapel Cemetery), Sabine County, Texas.
- Lipscomb "Lip" Nordell Martin was born in Oct 1859 in Texas; and died.
- 3. Margaret "Marge" Elizabeth Martin was born on 21 Nov 1862 in Brookeland, Sabine County, Texas; died on 7 Mar 1937 in Brookeland, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Brookeland Cemetery, Brookeland, Sabine County, Texas.
- James "Jimmy" M. Martin was born about 1870 in Sabine County, Texas; and died.
- Zeremiah Edward "Eddie" Martin was born on 29 Sep 1876 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 15 Mar 1926; was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery (aka Whitehead Cemetery or Martin-Whitehead Cemetery), Pineland, Sabine County, Texas.

12. | William Martin was born before 1800; died before 1850. Notes:
"William Martin and his son, Thomas Jefferson, received Bounty Land for their service in the Texas Revolution. William bought land in Sabine County from Lavina Popino (dau. of William Melton) in 1834. The Whitehead Cemetery is on this land." (White and Toole, p 88).
They may have been from Pike County, Mississippi, as this is the location of birth listed on the confederate widows pension application of their daughter, Mary Jane Martin Whitehead.
William married Harriett ??? about 1818. Harriett was born about 1805 in Mississippi; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

13. | Harriett ??? was born about 1805 in Mississippi; and died. Notes:
Married:
William and Harriett Martin moved their family from Mississippi to the Republic of Texas. (White and Toole, p 88). After William Martin's death--sometime after youngest son George was born ca 1838 and before the 1850 census---Harriett was said to have married second William Slaughter. At the time of the 1850 Sabine County, Texas, census, Harriett Slaughter, age 45, can be found with children Jane, Harriett and George B.
