    Joe B. Neal

    Joe B. Neal, 70, of San Augustine died Friday, December 3, 1999, in Nacogdoches.

    Neal was born Nov. 11, 1929 in Milam as a son of the late Loy P. and Marie (Harris) Neal and had been a longtime resident of San Augustine. He was a cattle rancher and retired bridge construction superintendent.

    Survivors: wife, Bessie Coussons Neal of San Augustine; daughters, Josette Newberry GASKIN of Austin and Suzanne Neal and Carol CARTWRIGHT both of San Augustine; sisters, Doris LEDBETTER of Los Angeles, California, Wilma ROBERTS of San Augustine and Joyce BROWN of Milam; a special friend, Pete GARRETT; and five grandchildren.

    Funeral services were held Dec. 5 at the First Baptist Church of San Augustine with Bro. Rickey Wood, Bro. Jim Moss and Bro. Fred Dade Jr officiating. Interment followed at Chumley Cemetery near San Augustine.

    Bessie Lou Coussons Neal

    Funeral services for Bessie Lou Coussons Neal, 75, of San Augustine were held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at First Baptist Church in San Augustine. Burial followed in the Chumley Cemetery in San Augustine County. Bro. Mike BELGRAD and Bro. Buddy PRATT officiated. She was a retired school teacher and a member of White Rock Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughters, Josette Neal NEWBERRY of Austin, Sue Neal BENTON and husband, Kevin, of Nacogdoches, and Carol Neal CARTWRIGHT of San Augustine, son Pete GARRETT; sister, Peggy DUKE of Hemphill, brother, Sammy COUSSONS and wife, Louise, of Nacogdoches; sisters-in-law, Lorraine COUSSONS of Nacogdoches and Freddie COUSSONS of Houston; and seven grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the White Rock Baptist Church or the Bessie Neal Scholarship Fund at Texas Bank and Trust, P.O. Box 639, San Augustine, Texas 75972. Wyman Roberts Funeral Home in San Augustine was in charge of arrangements.

    His Death Certificate shows he was a farmer, and that his father was Joe Neal. There was no data reported on his mother. He was married at the time of his death, and a resident of Isla, Texas. It was reported in 1940, on the Federal Census, that his highest grade completed was the 3rd grade.

  3. 14.  William Ersell Coussons was born on 3 Jul 1898 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas (son of Charles W. Coussons and Stella F. Wormwood); died on 23 Sep 1960 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Hemphill City Cemetery, Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas.

    W. E. Coussons, Prominent Local Citizen, Dies

    William Ersel Coussons, 62, of Hemphill, died Friday at 6:15 a.m. in his home of a heart attack, while preparing to go to work. This was his second heart attack. He had one five weeks ago. He had returned to working part time at his store a week ago last Monday. Mr. Coussons was a native of Hemphill and was a prominent merchant and businessman. He owned and operated the W. E. Coussons store in Hemphill since 1929, in addition to other real property. He was, at the time of his death, a director of the First State Bank of Hemphill. A veteran of World War I, her served overseas and was in France when the Armistice was declared. Mr. Coussons was a member of the Sabine Post 197, American Legion. He had also served as a Hemphill city councilman from 1940 to 1952; as a member of the draft board, and as a trustee of the Hemphill Independent School District. He was a member of the Little Fowler Masonic Lodge. Funeral serviced were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Lovis Dunn, pastor of the East Mayfield Baptist Church officiating, assisted by the Rev. Clarence Howell, pastor of the first Baptist Church of Hemphill and the Rev. C. A. Bly. Burial was in the Hemphill Cemetery under the direction of Starr Funeral Home of Hemphill. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Novie Pratt Coussons; three daughters, Mrs. Dan Williams of Hemphill, Mrs. Joe Neal of San Augustine, and Russell Duke of Indiana, Pa; three sons, Dr. Charles Coussons of Nacogdoches, Sammy Coussons of Hemphill and Paul Coussons of Houston; three sisters, Mrs. Dalton Smith of Hemphill, Mrs. John Bowers and Mrs. Vincent Kickerillo, both of Houston; two brothers, L. A. Coussons of Blythe, Calif., and Luman Coussons and 16 grandchildren.
