Their family first lived in Stuttgart, Arkansas, with their sponsor, a lawyer named A. G. Meehan. They later moved to Illinois, where he worked in the Aurora Round House, working in the shop on the trains, as a mechanical engineer. Wilhelm died when my dad was in high school."

Her grandaughter, Jennifer Fawley, writes that "My Omi married Artur Vanders just about the time I was born, maybe 1970. Artur Vanders came from Latvia too. They actually all knew each other from before the war, when Artur was a chauffeur for my grandfather's truck business." Jennifer added that she had three sisters, Anita, Christina and Elsa, all whom survived the Russian and German attacks, and whose children remain in Latvia.
