    Notes:

    COLUMBUS - Memorial services for Richard Lee Shaw, age 85 of Columbus, will be held on Saturday, July 24th at 2:30 p.m. at the Svoboda Funeral Home North Chapel in Schuyler. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.

    Richard was born Jan. 9, 1925, at Sargent, to Arthur C. and Helen (Crane) Shaw. He attended rural school and Sagrent High School. On April 19, 1952, he married Verna Lee Anderson in Omaha. They lived in Omaha until 1996 when they moved to Linwood and in 2009 they moved to Columbus. Dick worked as a heavy equipment operator and loved to garden. Dick died July 10, 2010, at Meridian Gardens Assisted Living Center in Columbus.
    Richard is survived by his wife, Verna Lee of Columbus; five children, Matthew Shaw of Beatrice, Range Shaw of Phoenix, Bowman (Florence) Shaw of Chicago, Julia Ann Marie Shaw Bartels (Don) of Boston, John (Christa) Shaw of Portland, Ore.; six grandchildren, Cole, Camron, Taylor, Andrew, Laura and Emma; one brother, Charles (Denise) Shaw of Craig; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

    He is preceded in death by brothers, Jack and Robert and sister, Betty.

    Verna Lee Shaw, 78, of Columbus, passed away Thursday, June 2, 2011 in Lincoln. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Svoboda Funeral Home, North Chapel. There will be no visitation or viewing.

    Verna was born April 13, 1933 in Milligan to Leonard and Vlasta (Cudly) Anderson. She graduated from Tobias High School and moved to Omaha. Verna married Richard Lee Shaw on April 19, 1952 in Omaha. In 1994 Verna and Richard moved to Linwood and in 2009 they moved to Columbus. Verna was a Data Processor for Qwest Communications.
    Verna is survived by sons: Matthew of Beatrice, Range and his domestic partner Bill Sheppard of Phoenix, AZ, Bowman (Florence) of Chicago, John (Christa) of Portland; daughter: Julie (Don) Bartels of Boston; grandchildren: Cole, Cameron, Taylor, Andrew, Lauren and Emma; sisters Leha Bojanski and Greta Schneider; nieces Patricia Martin and Linda Deines and nephew: Randy Bojanski.
    She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Richard in 2010.

    Immediately after their marriage, John and Marie moved to Hayes County to homestead. After proving their land, they moved to Saline county, where they farmed for eight years, and then to Fillmore County, where they farmed for an additional 26 years until their retirement. (Milligan, p 255).
