  1. 2.  Hiram Pickney Arnold, M. D. was born on 17 Aug 1917 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas (son of William Thomas Arnold, Jr. M. D. and Sarah Pearl Fuller); died on 28 Nov 2008 in Lufkin, Angelina County, Texas.

    Notes:

Dr. Arnold interned at Hermann Hospital in Houston. He returned to Houston after the war. He retired in Sabine County, but moved to Lufkin prior to 2002.

According to Book Three A PICTORIAL HISTORY OF SABINE COUNTY, TEXAS by Robert Cecil McDaniel, Captain Hiram Pinckney Arnold, Medical Corps, 1943 to 1946 served in England and France during World War II. He was with the 127th Army Hospital, which was formed in Austin, Texas.

The 14 March 1996 issue of the "San Augustine Tribune" included the following article:

Timber Growers to Honor Dr. Hiram Arnold

On Saturday, March 23, 1996 the Tri-County Timber Grower's Association will meet at the Community House in Center at 11 am.

Dr. Hiram Arnold of Hemphill will be honored for his many years of dedicated service to the Association and the timber industry.

SABINE COUNTY REPORTER 15 January 1997 "Back In Time--1996 One Year Ago"

Dr. Hiram P. Arnold of Six Miles was honored as Sabine County's "Citizen of the Year" by the Sabine County Chamber of Commerce. Linda Curtis Sparks delivered the keynote address at that annual awards and installation banquet.

    DR. HIRAM P. ARNOLD

The son of a country doctor, Hiram Pinckney Arnold was to follow in the footsteps of his father. Born in the small East Texas town of Hemphill on August 17, 1917, Hiram was the third child of Dr. William Thomas Arnold Sr. and Hannah Pearl Fuller Arnold. The Arnold family included sister Doris and brothers Woodrow, Hugh, and Tom. Hiram graduated in 1933 from Hemphill High School. The Depression was on and Hiram was young, so he worked as a soda jerk at Hemphill Drug before moving to Nacogdoches in 1935 to attend Stephen F. Austin College. From SFA, Hiram transferred to the University of Texas at Austin. As is well known, he was a passionate lifelong Longhorn fan. Through wars, recessions and bouts of ill health, Hiram remained a realist as well as an optimist. The only thing that could lead him to real despair was the occasional loss on Thanksgiving Day of the traditional football game with Texas A&M.

From UT, Hiram moved to Galveston to attend the University of Texas Medical School from which he graduated in 1940. After medical school, Hiram moved to Houston where he did his internship and a residency at Hermann Hospital. It was at Hermann that Hiram met the beautiful young student nurse, Gloria Jean Rickabaugh. During the Second World War, Hiram joined the Army. As a Captain in the legendary 127th General Hospital, he was stationed in England and France. After returning from overseas, the young doctor married Gloria Rickabaugh on January 28, 1946. The couple recently celebrated their 60th Anniversary. Hiram and his young bride settled in Galveston, Texas where he did a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Texas Medical School under Dr. Willard R. Cooke. While at UTMB, he had the opportunity to work with many of his close friends from the 127th General Hospital. In 1947, Hiram and his associate Dr. William R. Knight opened a medical practice in Obstetrics and Gynecology in what was then the fledgling Houston Medical Center. There he began his long-time association with The Methodist Hospital. He was for seventeen years the Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology and served a term as President of the Staff. During this time, the Methodist Hospital saw tremendous growth and the development of an international reputation. In 2006, Hiram and Gloria established at Methodist the Hiram and Gloria Arnold Urogynecology Lecture Endowment Fund.

Hiram and Gloria had their first son, Frank Rickabaugh in 1947 and in 1950 their second son, Forrest Douglas. Dr. Arnold practiced medicine in Houston for almost three decades. As a physician, he worked long hours but never lost his love for Obstetrics or his personal hostility to disease. He was a beloved physician, as attested to by the many patients who chose him to deliver all their children and by the willingness of his friends to entrust their wives and daughters to his care. He was a member of the Harris County Medical Society, the Texas Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and president for a term of the Texas Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Arnold was well known as a practical man and people often sought his advice when dealing with difficult problems. He was always ready to support projects he believed in. He and Gloria participated in the building of the J. R. Huffman Public Library in Hemphill and served on the Library Board for twelve years. Hiram was a mediocre golfer but became a much feared tennis opponent. Dr. Arnold enjoyed dealing in real estate and among his investments were properties he bought and leased out for cattle grazing along the two-lane, dirt shoulder road that was then called the Katy Highway and is now I-10 in the heart of Houston. In 1976, Dr. Arnold retired from medicine and devoted himself full time to his second career as a timber farmer in his beloved East Texas. He often said that a country boy had to move to the big city to make enough money to get back to the country. Hiram and Gloria were honored in 1991 as Tree Farmers of the Year. They contributed to the establishment of an Endowment Fund supporting a professorship in the Arthur Temple College of Forestry at Stephen F. Austin. Recently, Dr. Arnold sold most of his timber acreage but continued to operate the remaining tree farm until his death, Friday, November 28. He is survived by his wife Gloria, brother Tom, sons Rick and Forrest, and grandchildren Sam and Mason. Memorial services will be held Saturday, December 6, 2008 at the 1st Methodist Church of Lufkin, Henderson Chapel. Friends wishing to make a Memorial Donation may do so for the J. R. Huffman Memorial Library at Route 5 Box 2140 Hemphill, Texas, 75948.

    Obituary

On Wednesday, January 24, 2018, Gloria Jean Arnold passed away in her home in Austin, Texas, at the age of 96.

Gloria was born in Kelseyville, California, the fourth daughter of Reuben B. Rickabaugh, an entrepreneur and fruit orchard farmer, and Emma Priscilla Harper Rickabaugh. When Gloria was only 13, Reuben died, leaving Emma to shepherd Gloria and her four sisters, Joyce, Jane, June, and Jasmine, through Depression Era life. Gloria enjoyed her school years. In 1939 she was elected Attendant to the Queen at the area Almond Blossom Festival. Though the family saw years of struggle, Gloria remembered fondly her small-town childhood in Northern California with her mother and sisters.

After graduating from high school, Gloria and a girlfriend traveled by Greyhound bus across the southwest to Houston, where she enrolled in the Hermann Hospital School of Nursing. In nursing school, Gloria was number one in her class for three years, and she graduated with highest honors. After graduation, Gloria worked as a surgical nurse for well-known Houston physician Dr. E. W. Bertner.

While a student at Hermann, she met Dr. Hiram Arnold, who was the instructor for her nursing class in pharmacology. Their developing relationship was interrupted by World War II when Hiram was deployed overseas as a Captain with the Army's 127th General Hospital Unit. At the end of the war, within days of his return from Europe, Hiram and Gloria were married, a union that was to continue for 62 years.

The newly married couple lived in Galveston, where Gloria worked as a nurse at St. Mary's Hospital, then moved to Houston, where Hiram entered private practice. They soon started a family with sons Frank Rickabaugh born in 1947 and Forrest Douglas in 1950.

Settling in southwest Houston, Hiram and Gloria raised their sons and participated for three decades in a large, close-knit extended family and in a large group of what would prove to be lifelong friends. They were for many years active members of Bethany Methodist Church.

Gloria was an untiring volunteer and devoted time to, among other organizations, the Harris County Medical Society Auxiliary, the Methodist Hospital Chaplain's Office, and the American Cancer Society.

When she was already 50, Gloria became an avid tennis player; she played tennis for 25 years.

Retiring to East Texas in the mid-1970s, Hiram and Gloria built a home on the Toledo Bend Reservoir near Hemphill, the small town where Hiram had grown up. Hiram and Gloria were principals in developing the J. R. Huffman Library in Hemphill. After the library opened in 1994, they served for years on its board of directors.

After their years of living on the lake, Hiram and Gloria moved to Lufkin, where they extended their circle of friends and were members of First United Methodist Church. Gloria volunteered as a literacy teacher and a mentor to young people. She was a member of Lufkin's History Club and the Literary Club.

After Hiram passed away, Gloria continued living in Lufkin, then moved to Austin where her sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were living.

Gloria Jean Rickabaugh Arnold is survived by, and will be greatly missed by, her sister Jasmine Jorgenson; her sons Rick and his wife Linda and Forrest and his wife Cindy; her grandsons Sam and Mason; and her great grandchildren Daxton and Cecily.

A memorial service honoring the life of Gloria Arnold will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Lufkin on Saturday, March 24th, 2018, at 11 AM.
Those wishing to make a memorial donation should contact the J. R. Huffman Library at 375 Sabine St., Hemphill, Texas, 75948.

    Myrtle Springs receives marker

An official Texas Historic Cemetery Marker was dedicated April 28, at Geneva Myrtle Springs Cemetery. The day was also the cemetery's annual homecoming......

    The newly placed marker reads:
    GENEVA MYRTLE SPRINGS CEMETERY

Situated North of the small, rural community of Geneva, the Geneva Myrtle Springs Cemetery serves as the primary resting place for pioneers, settlers of the area, and their descendants. Originally granted to Juan Ignatino Pifermo in 1794, the town of Geneva grew in the 1820s when pioneers began to settle there from the east. Geneva was first known as Shawnee village and later as Jimtown, after two early settlers of the are, Jim Halbert and Jim Willis. Originally surveyed for Daniel F. Renfro in 1838, the Geneva Myrtle Springs Cemetery is comprised of land granted by Levi T. ALLEN in 1879 for use as a church and cemetery. The Geneva Baptist Church was first located on the present day cemetery site, but later moved south of the area. In addition, a school was once located near the cemtery near Myrtle Springs, organized by William Thomas Arnold.

The general landscaping of the cemetery is traditional with brick, marble, sandstone, grantie, wood, and metal grave markers. The first marked grave is that of William J. JONE from 1888, but Bible records indicate that there were earlier unmarked graves, including that of Wiley William CROW (1845-1877). Among the many pioneer families interred at this cemetery, there are veterans of the Civil War, including Wiley CROW, Seth Marion LAYFIELD (1833-1906), and James T. MEADOR (1845-1933), as well as veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Iraq War. Burials for members of the fraternal organizations such as Woodmen of the World are present. Today, the Geneva Myrtle Springs Cemetery Association maintains and cares for the cemtery, while also serving the community of Geneva. Historic Texas Cemetery -2010.
