Professor David F. Striffler died on May 29

ANN ARBOR? David F. Striffler, professor emeritus of dental public health in the University of Michigan School of Public Health, and professor emeritus of dentistry in the U- M School of Dentistry, died here on May 29. Striffler, 72, was a national leader in the field of dental public health.

"Students always came first with Dr. Striffler," said Brian A. Burt, chair of the Department of Community Health Programs at the School of Public Health. "He contributed substantially to the development of his discipline, but his greatest satisfaction was always the achievements of his graduates. In his active career and in retirement, he loved to keep in contact with as many of them as possible. He even learned to use e-mail after his retirement to help him do this. He will be sadly missed by all of us."

Born in Pontiac, Mich., Striffler received his D.D.S. degree in 1947 and his master's degree in public health in 1951 from the U-M. He served as director of school health in the Dearborn public schools in 1951-53, and director of the Division of Dental Health of the New Mexico Department of Public Health in 1953-61.

In 1961, Striffler returned to Ann Arbor as an associate professor of dental public health and associate professor of dentistry. In 1962, he became director of the Program in Dental Public Health and the first chairman of the Department of Community Dentistry, a dual appointment he held, along with his teaching responsibilities, until 1967. He was appointed professor in both schools in 1965.

Striffler also was acting chair of the Department of Health Development in the School of Public Health in 1968- 69, and acting chair of community dentistry in 1969-71. He became chair of the Department of Community Health Programs in 1980.

The senior editor of the leading textbook in dental public health, "Dentistry, Dental Practice and the Community," Striffler also served as associate editor and editor of the Journal of Public Health Dentistry and published numerous scientific papers and editorial commentaries.

Striffler was active in major professional organizations. In recognition of his contributions to his field, Striffler received the Distinguished Service Award of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry in 1977 and the Knutson Award of the Dental Section of the American Public Health Association in 1984.

Striffler is survived by his wife, Ruth; daughter, Stephanie of Portland, Ore., and son, Geoffrey of Edgewood, N.M.; and granddaughter, Irene Marjorie Striffler Milsom of Portland. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. June 17 at the First Unitarian Church in Ann Arbor. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Dave Striffler Fund at the U-M School of Public Health.

    Former Argyle Merchant Is Dead

Samuel W. Striffler, who had been in poor health for several years, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Angus McPhail, on Tuesday afternoon at the age of 70 years.

He was born in Lancaster, New York, on Dec. 4, 1857. In 1863, the family moved to Sturgis, Michigan, and in 1877 they came to Cass City, settling on a farm in the northeastern part of Elkland township.

On May 9, 1882, Mr. Striffler was united in marriage with Miss Pauline Ahr and they commenced their married life on Mr. Striffler's farm in Greenleaf township, three miles east and one mile north of Cass City. Here their children were born and they remained there until December, 1891, when, owing to Mrs. Stiffler's failing health, they moved to Argyle, Sanilac county, where Mr. Striffler engaged in the mercantile business. As a merchant for 28 years in Argyle, Mr. Striffler became widely acquainted, and because of his honorable dealings with his customers and his public spirit in advancing the interests of his town, he was held in high esteem in that community. He was a regular attendant of the Argyle M.E. church and a staunch supporter of that society.

In the spring of 1920, Mr. Striffler sold his mercantile business at Argyle and bought a home in Cass City. Mrs. Striffler passed away on Nov. 4, 1920, and a son, Edward H., preceded his parents in death in 1903. Since Mrs. Striffler's death, Mr. Striffler has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Angus McPhail.

Funeral services will be held in the Evangelical church in Cass City this (Friday) afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. George Hill, assisted by Rev. C.F. Smith, and interment will be made in Elkland cemetery.

Mrs. Striffler is survived by five children, Mrs. John A. Sandham and Mrs. Angus McPhail, both of Cass City, Mrs. Wm. Moreton of Detroit, Fred Striffler of Caro and Dr. Harry C. Striffler of Pontiac; two brothers, Wm. D. Striffler and Solomon C. Striffler, both of Cass City, and three sisters, Mrs. Chas. E. Patterson and Mrs. Edward Helwig, both of Cass City, and Mrs. Andrew McDermott of Alhambra, California.

Passing of Early Resident of Elkland Township

The Funeral of Mrs. Samuel W. Striffler was held Monday afternoon

Mrs. Samuel W. Striffler, for many years an invalid, passed away at her home on South Seeger St., Cass City, Thursday afternoon, Nov. 4, at the age of 60 years.

Pauline Ahr was born Oct. 2, 1860, in Bridgeport, Conn. At the age of eight years, she came to Cass City with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. G. Ahr. The family was among the first settlers in Elkland township, saw it pass through the ravages of two forest fires in '71 and '81 and witnessed the transformation from virgin forests to a rich agricultural section. Miss Ahr resided in Cass City until 1882 when on May 9 she was united in marriage with Samuel W. Striffler. They lived on a farm near Cass City, where their children were born, until December 1891 when the family moved to Argyle chiefly because of Mrs. Striffler's failing health. Here Mr. Striffler was engaged in the mercantile business for 28 years.

Mrs. Striffler was brought to Pleasant Home Hospital at Cass City last February where she remained several months. When Mr. and Mrs. Striffler purchased a home on South Seeger St. recently, she was moved there where her death occured last Thursday.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Evangelical church where Mrs. Striffler was a member previous to her residence at Argyle. Rev. J.A. Yeomans of Midland, a former pastor of the M.E. church at Argyle where Mrs. Striffler was a faithful member, officiated at the service, assisted by Rev. Wm. Richards, pastor of the local M.E. church, and Rev. Bowman, past of the Argyle church. Songs were touchingly rendered by Mrs. Grace Wilder Harris of Caro and floral offerings were many and of a rare beauty. A large number of friends of the family came from Argyle and Hay Creek and the church never had a larger audience at a similar service.

Rev. Yeomans spoke appreciatively of Mrs. Striffler's helpfulness and encouragement in the church work at Argyle where she served the congregation in several official capacities. Among a host of friends, she ranked always as a woman of refinement and sympathy, a kind neighbor, devoted mother and a true friend, and withal a woman of heroic mould in bravely meeting the disappointments of life incident to prolonged illness. Flowers not thorns, sunshine not shadow, did she scatter everywhere.

Besides her husband, she leaves five children, Mrs. J.A. Sandham and Mrs. Angus McPhail, both of Cass City, Mrs. Wm. Moreton of Detroit, Fred C. Striffler of Caro and Dr. Harry Striffler of Pontiac; three sisters, Mrs. C.O. Lenzner of Cass City; Mrs. Emma Gamble of Flind and Mrs. Lydia Royer of New York City; and one brother, T.H. Ahr of Ferrell, Idaho. One son, Edward H., preceded Mrs. Striffler in death in 1903.

Relatives and fireds from a distance in attendance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Moreton of Detroit, Dr. and Mrs. Harry Striffler of Pontiac, Mr. and Mrs. F.C. Striffler, Mr. and Mrs. Howell and W.H. Cooper of Caro, Mrs. Lydia Royer of New York City, Mrs. Emma Gamble of Flint, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Muellerweiss and daughter, Claudia, of Sebewaing, Mrs. Ida Held, Mrs. Henry Schust, Mrs. Sophia Housner and Mrs. Jos. Ackerman, all of Saginaw, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lagden of Bay City and Mr. and Mrs. F.H Muck of Colwood.
